The pitch itself is supposed to look like that, but you have to disguise your arm speed better than he did. It's a gimmick pitch that should be used very rarely and one I wouldn't recommend using much beyond the 9th grade or so. It's most effective against weak hitters who have to cheat to catch up to your fastball.

a-rod grounded out on one of those, i think it was kaz matsui or whatever his name is, the thing really is to throw a few fastballs or something to make the hitter think your gonna throw the fastball, then lob the eephus in there, not likely it will always work, but the best you can hope for is that he doesnt swing, or that its a ball off the plate, then you blow the fastball by him for the strikeout, its more of a intentional ball in a sense, depends on where you throw it i guess

That was Kaz Tadano. (Kaz Matsui is a second baseman.)

A couple of years earlier, El Duque had thrown two eephus pitches in a row to A-Rod. He took the first one, but homered on the second one.

This is the Best Eephus ever : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXRWM-qrOtc

But really, it's a dumb pitch. It's a Knuckleball with almost no movement (or so it seems)

But hey, it's a trick pitch.

lol, i've seen that before, i dont think that thats legal, also, thats a game show, but hey, if you throw as fast as joel zumya, thats an effective pitch, if you throw a fastball like tim wakefield, well......best place to be as a fan is the bleachers, or maybe even the parking lot

Eephus is a trick pitch. What this one guy I know does in Wii Sports is throws his 100 mph fastball a couple times, then lobs it. He has the amazing ability to throw it so s...l...o...w...l...y and the Wii still picks up the motion, which is cool. Everyone is thrown off and is too impatient to wait for the ball to reach them, so they swing too early.

yeah, going from a 100 mph fastball to a 60something mph "fastball" is awesome.
I love using the splitter too.
