Ok, so with everyone complaining about how they are tired about this spam and want it to stop. You are walking the walk, but now you need to talk the talk. I'm one of those that want to get rid of all the spam and get everything under control. Since nobody else has stepped up yet and someone has to to get this all to stop. So I'll take charge.

Now, first off before I start let me make this VERY clear:

NO SPAMMING this topic

Now that that is gone let me continue.

No names will be mentioned but many people around the site have been starting to spam and fight in threads as well others bumping topics that are very very old. So now people are starting to get tired of it after a while and want it to stop. They've been continually saying that but haven't done anything, so now, here's a thread where all those that want spam to stop can post in this thread and make plans to get this spam to stop.

If you are a spammer, Don't post in this topic.

So lets band together and put a stop to this fighting!

Now to start, my first suggestion would be to just ignore the ones that spam. Spammers usually spam to get attention, so by ignoring them they don't get fun and will eventually given time will stop.

I might also suggest, that if someone bumps a topic they probably just again want attention. Once again I would say just don't even post in the topic and let it re-die.

What do you guys have?

Our Ideas to Stop Spam:

1) Ignore spammers
2) If someone bumps a topic, don't post, let the thread fall again
3) Report spams/unnecessary bumping.
4) Bump only topics when you have meaningful information to add.
5) Never join in on a spam fight
6) Try advertising stopping spam in signatures
7) If you make a topic, make it clear in your first post that you don't want any spam

Keep the ideas flowing in! Don't forget to make sure you all carry these out!

What I have is: we need to press the report button on posts that are spam/useless or bumping topics and etc
noone seems to use that option but it seems like the best option you can use

As for bumping topics: ONLY topics that you can add on to should be bumped, if you have something you can add on for an explanation thats important then feel free to bump, BUT ONLY FOR USEFUL INFO

there are probably other things to add but I'll leave it at that for now

Yeah, that's good, just press the report button and report them. Of course, still just ignore the spam and bump as well.

Everyone that doesn't bump aimlessly know that they should only do it if it's meaningful information. Other than that, topics shouldn't be bumped.

Good contributions.

Also, in a spam fight, NEVER join in the fight. Trying to stop it isn't advised as you might get intwined in it.

I'm sure you are with me and trying to stop this spam all over the place.

I completely agree. Should we advertise in our sigs?

Gocubs, that's a pretty good idea. Give a link to this thread and tell alittle about how to stop spam, good thought. OK, how about you and jacobye spread the word around to advertise stopping spam in your signature. I'm going out on a search and am going to find all the current threads that have alot of spam in them and make a list and post them here. Then I will advertise NOT to be posting in those said threads to let them die.

Nice thinking gocubs.

Ok define "spam" so I know what it is. I agree about fighting, not so much about bumping. But I do agree that you have to have information to add if you bump.

Unless of course it's a character request.

You know, there aren't many character requests. Only :bump: if your request hasn't been replied on in about 1-2 weeks. Even without it, your request still should be high up. There isn't much need to :bump: them anyway.

I know what it is, but I'm going to have a hard time defining it.

Spam on the internet as a whole has to do with gettting unwanted unsolicit e-mails. What we call spam is when people mindlessly double post and triple post etc. In a topic at the forum you could it unwanted information in a topic. For example, one word posts. Another example could be "flaming" at another member on the topic, where as a fight will probably break out.

I would define spam as useless, unwanted posts in a topic that waste space and makes it harder for other members to find information they want in a desired topic.
Spam also uses up alot of network bandwith.

If someone wants to add onto this, please feel free. It might not be the best definition.

Excellent addition apple.

Now robdiesel, that would be something that could be considered spam, a one word post. I do understand that it does have to do with the topic, but next time please try to add on to the idea list. Ideally, most people don't like one word posts it also takes up space to finding desired information.

Rob,

Haven't we tried that though? Haven't we tried to tell people to stop spamming mindlessly? But unfortunately it just doesn't work. It's not alot of people spamming either. I would say it's about a couple or so that do it regularly.
