This was going on in another thread, but it really should be here. J GAO- What and Rickey Henderson? Say you could put together a top 25 roster. 11 or 12 pitchers, your choice. What do you think? |

Give me these 25 (tough to limit to 25!): C - Johnny Bench 1B - Lou Gehrig 2B - Rogers Hornsby 3B - Brooks Robinson SS - Ozzie Smith LF - Ted Williams CF - Willie Mays RF - Hank Aaron DH - Babe Ruth BN - Jackie Robinson (2B) BN - Alex Rodriguez (3B, SS) BN - Pete Rose (positional versatility! - 1B, 2B, 3B, OF) BN - Barry Bonds (LF) BN - Ichiro Suzuki (CF, RF) That's 14 position players, have every position covered twice except catcher. For my 11 pitchers: SP - Bob Gibson SP - Sandy Koufax SP - Cy Young SP - Greg Maddux SP - Walter Johnson SP - Whitey Ford RP - Satchel Paige RP - Christy Mathewson RP - Carl Hubbell CL - Mariano Rivera CL - Dennis Eckersley |

Ok now come up with the k=lineup. But these are pretty good. Pudge is better then Johnny Bench though, look at the numbers. And Brooks Robinson was good but there have been better. He just has the name. And Ernie Banks should be the SS on everyones list. |

Pudge does have the numbers. But I've never liked him. Most people do agree, though, that Wagner was the best all-round shortstop ever, with only a young A-Rod who could possibly take that crown. |

I'd still take Bench for his play in the pre expansion, pre steroid era. Plus the larger parks that teams played in compared to today make Pudge's stats a little less valuable. Someone else that I think could have been on this list, if he could have stayed healthier for his career, is Griffey Jr. He has 600 HR's and is a 10 time Gold Glove winner. Just think of all the games he missed in 'Natti over the years. |

Okay, I know Ernie Banks may have been tne nicest guy to ever play SS, but his LBA is .274 and Honus Wagner's is .327. I think I'll take Wagner. Not arguing with the rosters posted so far, but here's a couple other names I didn't think we'd want to forget.... Warren Spahn LHP Buck Leonard (1B similar to LG) Oscar Charleston (CF similar to MM before injury) Mike Schmidt 3B Cool Papa Bell CF (I won't argue he is as good as Mays or Mantle, but hey, I'd love to time him around the bases just once!) John Henry "Pop" Lloyd SS (Babe Ruth said he was the greatest player he ever saw and Honus Wagner said it was an honor to be compared with him) and if Martin Dihigo was on your bench, you wouldn't have to worry about any gaps in your line-up! |
