Rivera has only started six games this year. He has four shutouts and six complete games. The most runs he's ever given up in a game is two.

That's a lot of pitches for a guy who is a closer but suprised that he's done so well

Haha, he actually was a starter at first. Actually, he was a shortstop. He was in a league in Panama and had come from a very poor family. He normally played short-stop on his team, but the starting pitcher got injured at the last second and Mo fooled around with a few pitches. he pitched that 1 day. Just by chance, a scout happened to be there who was looking at a diffrent player. They liked his speed and control and signed him.
When Mariano first came up, he was a starter whose main pitch was a change-up. He was terrible and was quickly sent down. The Yankees were finalizing a trade that would send Mariano away when they tried him out as a relieve.r Suddenly his fastball was 7 miles faster and he was un-hittable (relievers throw faster as they don't have to worry about stamina and tiring themselves out). He threw a cutter by mistake in practice, and it was so good that he began using it as a reliever. The Yankees brought him back up, and the rest is history.

Papelbom actually used to be a starter, he'll probably get more strikeouts than Rivera but he'll have a higher ERA and more walks
