Post subject:  NHL winter classic @ Wrigley
did anybody else watch it, if only for the one-shot deal of pucks at Wrigley?
I know one thing, I wish they would've at least made the rink boards look like brick. that, and the Hawks had somehow not sucked in the second period (I'm not a Hawks fan, I'm an Avs fan, I just wanted to see the Wings lose). I know one thing though, Huet's (Hawks goalie) mask looked better than he played.

I don't follow hockey, so I don't know much about the sport, but I could tell that goalie was sucking in the second period. One more question for anyone who does follow hockey: Are hockey games usually high scoring games? I thought hockey games were usually 1-0, 1-2, or any low scoring games, not 6-4!

Hockey games are usually more high-scoring than soccer games, but not nearly as high as any other sport. I would say that an average score would be 3-2.
On topic: I only saw about 2 minutes of the Winter Classic, but that's where the Red Wings scored 2 goals in 17 seconds. :( Being a Pens fan, I hate the Red Wings, so I turned it off after that.

Well, I'm a Bruins fan, we beat you yesterday, and are up 2-1 in the second period.


They are USUALLY higher scored than Soccer, not always. Most of the time yes. Depends on the soccer teams playing. If it was like Dagenham playing Bayern Munich, the score would probably be like 9-1, 9-0, 10-0.

now there's something I wasn't expecting: a reference to Dag & Red. in any event, yeah hockey games usually had slightly higher scores than futbol, even before the post-lockout rule changes. though then 0-0 ties used to be pretty common too, now there's shootouts.

I just wasn't expecting a hockey game score to end 6-4 like a normal baseball game score would be.

The scores aren't much higher than your average soccer score but the games are faster paced and a little more exciting to watch for me. Not that I watch full hockey games often or dislike Soccer.

Bruins are playing pretty well and i'm hoping we can go all the way this year, unfortunately some of the fans i've spoken to are convinced they'll choke and aren't expecting anything. Come on guys, we have to win eventually

I watched the Winter Classic, though the last half of the 3rd period was mainly on as "background noise" while I did other things. One of the startling statistics was that 8 of the 9 goals in the game were scored in the same goal - all of them except the Wings 1st period goal. That obviously suggests that there was some sort of competitive advantage going in that direction. I read that the wind was blowing fairly hard in the face of the goalies in that direction, so it's not hard to imagine that they were getting bleary eyed and had a harder time tracking the puck. In the 3rd period they changed sides halfway through the period, which is the same thing they did last year. I think the NHL should have the teams do that in all three periods next year to minimize any advantage going in one direction has.

Hockey scoring depends on the night, though 6 goals is definitely on the high side for your average game. But the current era is not like the late '90s up to the lockout year where it was all clutching and grabbing and 1-0 or 2-1 defensive struggles.

I'm more of a casual hockey fan. I follow the Dallas Stars, but I don't often watch games where the Stars aren't playing. I have a feel for the different teams and the better players in the NHL, but I'm not a serious enough fan to really know all the team rosters like I do with MLB. I usually go to 2-3 hockey games a year, though I haven't been to one yet this season. Tomorrow I'll be going to the arena where the Stars/Mavericks play, but it will be to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra rather than a game :)
