I didn't care too much about Sabathia or Burnett but my heart skipped a beat when I read that on mlb.com just now. The only real consolation I can take from this is that after all this it'd be even sweeter if the Yankees fail to make the playoffs this year. Though I think even the biggest Yankee haters can admit the chances of that happening are slim. |

Its 180 million, if the Yankees don't make te payoffs, something is wrong, adding manny into the line up, it would be the Phillies 3,4,5. Tex,A-Rod,Manny, wow...Well, im happy:) |

I'd say Manny in pinstripes is pretty much not going to happen now. He was a fall back option for all the teams who didn't get Tex. Manny is getting old, and hes messed in the head which is why everyone preferred Tex. Alright now hopefully they can still spare the 10 million for Pettitte, then we're all set. I feel a 162-0 season coming on! |

Won't happen, max would be 105 wins. The yankees could move matsui up to 5th, so where is nick gonna play? CF? |

I was thinking the same thing. I was thinking Swisher would play first, but now that they have Teixeira, Swisher's got to play somewhere in the outfield. I'm going to assume he'll play center field and Melky will get put on the bench? |

Bud Selig is INFURIATED that they are paying almost half a BILLION for just THREE free agents. He is INFURIATED. If the Yanks don't make playoff, they are going to be even more over luxury tax. They were 23.9million. If the Yankees don't make playoffs it's going to be tough, they aren't going to be able to sign much... Well Red Sox, there is still Burrell! |

Well now that an hour has passed and i've had time to think about it it doesn't seem so bad. I remember feeling similar back when A-Rod first signed with the Yankees, of course it's a little different this time but nothing is set in stone and yeah, the Yankees have a great team on paper but we'll have to wait and see how they perform in pinstripes. If Bud Selig hates it so much why doesn't he fight harder to introduce a salary cap?, and if the players union keep fighting against it he could always make the luxury tax actually mean something. Also I haven't done the math but I think the Yankees payroll would be in the same region it was last year since they've lost a lot of high paid players too, it won't be as bad as people think unless they add Manny for some reason. I still hate Scott Boras though. |

So what about the luxary tax, 23.5M to the yankees is like ARod worrying about spending 5 bucks. It's pocket change. I have always said and always will...baseball needs a salary cap! This is just more proof as to way. Yankee's going to give it try at buying another WS title. Why bother keeping up with the season if you already know it will come down to the same five or six teams. Every few years you might get the surprise team like the Rays but even they are going to blow up when key contracts come due. Things would have been more intresting if the Yankee didn't have the cap space and it came down to either Baltimore or the Nats. Set up a salary cap similar to the NBA, teams still have leverage on keeping their players but makes it harder for someone to gobble up all the top FA. This is the reason I hate baseball and wish it would change. |

Now the Yankees should try trading Damon and Matsui (and possibly prospects) for a CF (Mike Cameron comes to mind). Swisher can play left, Cameron or somebody in center, and Nady in right. Cabrera would be the backup. Then they can sign Manny Ramirez to DH. ![]() |

If manny signs, no one would play the yankees in season mode next year. |

You have to keep in mind that the Yankees had $88.5 million come off their payroll after last season (Giambi, Mussina, Pavano, Pettite, and maybe one or two others), and adding Teixeira, Sabathia, and Burnett only adds back $62 million. So at this point their payroll is still $26 million less than it was last year. I don't like the Yankees, but I also don't begrudge them for doing what so many other owners refuse to do - spend a significant amount of their profits on improving their team. I grew up a Cardinals fan and after the great Auggie Busch died I watched the Anheiser-Busch corporation spend the '90s bleeding the loyal fanbase while spending as little as possible on the team. They raked in record profits while the franchise of the '80s went in the toilet. And living in the Dallas-Ft.Worth area for the last decade I've watched owner Tom Hicks for the most part run the Rangers payroll as if they were a small market team, yet Dallas is something like the 5th largest media outlet in the country. This may be Cowboys country, but '98-'99 showed that people will support the Rangers if the team shows it cares about the product it puts on the field. But the owner would rather pocket the profits he makes off the team. And too many other team owners are like that. [edit] fixed my math typo (changed 16 to 26) |
