Preferably said by a character, but if you want the narrator to say it, I won't complain. I'm not really sure what this turned into, but I finally finished it... Here goes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ “Not all good things are happy, and not all bad things are sad,” read my dad’s favorite advice. Ironically, it was my dad that was the cause of some of those bad things I encountered that summer with the Strikers FC. But, in a way, everything turned out to be pretty good in the end. Let me explain. My name’s Ryder Fox. Or Roger. It really depends on who you’re asking, but I quite prefer Ryder. Oh, and let’s get one thing straight: I’m a girl. Forget the fact that my parents named me Roger, or that I played for the boys’ soccer team at school and a boys’ club team as well. I’m a girl, and you can’t do anything to change that. Nothing about that first week of practice was particularly happy. It was tough work for anyone, but especially for this poor kid named Zander, who seemed to throw up after every sprint we completed. Still, he seemed pretty nice, and I thought I should try to get to know him better. So after our Friday practice was over, I jogged over to him and asked if he would like to get in a little extra practice — penalty kicks, with our team’s goalie Brandon defending against both of us. “Loser buys ice cream for all of us,” I said. Zander looked me in the eye. “Deal,” he said in that oddly high voice of his. And an unlikely bond was formed. After Brandon had gone home, the two of us decided to go lay out in the grass and talk more. It was there that Zander truly opened up to me. Honestly, I thought he was kinda cute, but then he told me that he was actually gay. “Well, technically I’m pansexual, but… boys, you know?” he giggled. “I feel you, dude,” I agreed. Additionally, like me, he was also transgender. Female to male, the opposite of me, but still — another thing to bond over! We were already getting along! The thought of making friends kinda scared me, but there was something about Zander that made me feel safe. I still couldn’t feel happy, though. Not with my parents’ refusal to accept me for who I really was. I’d heard them talking as they watched the news. I can’t even bring myself to repeat some of their words, but let me say that I’m pretty sure I would’ve been kicked out immediately were I to come out. “Not all good things are happy,” nodded my dad. “And not all bad things are sad,” I sung back, just as I always had. Four years later, it’s pretty hard to imagine continuing to live like that. There were several times that I’d considered suicide or relapsed into self-harming tendencies, but I made it out, and here I am. Of course, I wouldn’t be here without a little help. I’d like to thank the police officers who, two and a half years ago, came and arrested both of my parents on bank fraud charges. They’re now locked away for a while, and they can’t do anything to me now. I guess I felt pretty bad for my parents, watching them ride off in the squad cars… But I sure wasn’t sad. |
