Patriots Season Ends in an Overtime Heartbreaker as Bironas Plays Hero

AFC Championship Game -- The Patriots could just watch Rob Bironas' 38-yard kick in overtime end the Patriots season in heartbreaking fashion. The Titans got off to a 9-0 lead late in the 2nd after Bironas knocked through 3 field goals but with 5 seconds left in the half, Welker caught a 2-yard pass to end the half and make it 9-7 Titans. The Patriots took the lead on their opening possession with a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ben Watson and they converted for 2 points to make it 15-9 Patriots. But Brady through an interception in their own territory to set up a 2-yard touchdown run to Chris Johnson who ran for 110 yards to make it 16-15 and they would end the quarter with a field goal by Bironas to make it 19-15 heading to the 4th quarter. The Patriots and Titans exchanged field goals to make it 22-18 Titans with 4:07 left and the Patriots had the ball. Tom Brady led the Patriots on another amazing drive spanning 14 plays and 79 yards ending on a 3-yard run by Maroney to give them the lead 25-22 with just 37 seconds left and the underdog Patriots looked like they were headed to the Super Bowl. But not so fast. The Titans now had to pass instead of run but had 3 timeouts and a 37 yard return by Pearman, a few runs by Vince Young and finally a 21-yard pass to Kenny Britt with just 3 seconds left gave Bironas ONE chance to tie the game. He was good on his 54-yard field goal to send this memorable game into overtime. The Titans got the ball first and thats the last we would see of it as a 15 yard run by Chris Johnson an a 23-yard reception by Justin Gage was all Bironas needed for the 38-yard field goal for the win to send the Titans to the Super Bowl in Miami. It was a memorable all-time classic game but for the Patriots, they will remember how it slipped away with them as Rob Bironas added on to his legend with 7 field goals and 2 clutch ones.

Super Bowl XLIV

Image Minnesota Vikings(15-3)
Image Tennessee Titans(16-2)

In the end the two best teams in the NFL will play for the Super Bowl. The 15-3 Minnesota Vikings who were 2nd in PPG and 2nd in rush offense behind Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson will take on the 16-2 Tennessee Titans who were 1st in PPG and 1st and rushing offense but they are facing the Vikings who are 10th in passing and 1st in rush defense but the Titans are 2nd in rush defense. This is a great even matchup and a great Super Bowl will be held here in Miami

Oh yeah and in the offseason I won't do too much coverage because in general that takes a long time and posting things here would take too long but I will tell of offseason pickups and the draft

Patriots Season In Review
The Patriots ended their season 10-6 and ended their season in the AFC Championship game in overtime to Tennessee. After going 11-5 and missing the playoffs last year, the Patriots made it at 10-6 while Brady was named the best QB of the year after missing all of last year. The Patriots relied a lot on Welker and Moss who both were great this season but could never really find that 3rd wide receiver and could not consistently use that running game to full use. The Patriots were once 10-3 but lost 3 straight to end the season. The offense was surely not the probably, the Patriots defense was dead last in the league in passing yards allowed and struggled to stop a lot of big plays. The offensive line was an underrated group as well for New England as it gave Brady a chance to have another great season and it included 5 pro bowlers. The overall grade for the season: B

Patriots Halfbacks run from the League, Big Names Retire
The Patriots have taken a huge hit at running back, they lost Kevin Faulk, Sammy Morris and Fred Taylor who all decided to retire as they were all 33 years old. Junior Seau and Shawn Springs also retired, Faulk will be remembered the most though as he has been in New England since 1999, he spent his whole career here. But also big name quarterbacks Kurt Warner and Brett Favre retired, except it is Favre but I think he's finally done. Other big names retiring were FB Tony Richardson, QB's Jake Delhomme, Kerry Collins and Jon Kitka. WR's Derrick Mason, Terrell Owens, Isaac Bruce and Joey Galloway were the big WR's and LB's Mike Vrabel, Derrick Brooks and Jason Taylor also decided to set down the spikes and retire.

New England Patriots Offseason In Review
The Patriots offseason was considered pretty good as they retained guys like Vince Wilfork, Leigh Bodden and Tully Banta-Cain. The Patriots did not retain or were unable to keep Dan Connoly, Brett Lockett, fullback Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis and both tight ends Chris Baker and Ben Watson left as well. The Patriots signed TE Alge Crumpler who caught 32 catches and is considered more of a blocking tight end. They also signed fullback Jermemi Johnson who averaged 3.7 yards per carry and signed running back Julius Jones who is looking for a comeback after running for 898 yards in 14 games for Seattle last season. Their big and only defensive move was signing outside linebacker Joey Porter to a contract, he forced 3 fumbles, had 3 interceptions and 14 sacks last season in just 13 games last season. The Patriots also got some talent in the draft which will be mentioned next.
