Initially, from an article on Yahoo News. Here is another link that discusses the subject:

Just type in "origin of word soccer" in any search engine and you'll pull up several articles just like the one listed above. Most seem to say it was England. On just says the term was invented in Europe. In any event, it's not us "dumb Americans calling it by the wrong name."
