Yates passed through the intersection slowly, watching the argument closely. He turned down the radio to hear what they were saying.
"Listen," started the man, "I KNOW you were at his house last night!"
"Then," rebuked the woman, "why in the hell are we out here arguing?!"

The man's hand, still raised, closed to a fist and quickly dropped on the woman's face.
A swift punch to the jaw knocked her to the ground.
"Shit!" yelled Yates.

He stopped his car, stepped out, closed the door, and then stepped back in to turn on his hazard lights.
Precious few seconds wasted, Yates ran over to the still very vocal argument going on between the man and the now grounded woman.
When he was in earshot, "Hey!" Yates began, "What the hell do you think you're doing?!"

The man turned his attention away from the woman and glared straight into Yates' green eyes. "Who the *(censored)* do you think you're supposed to be?"
God, his breath stinks! He thought, not noticing the fist swiftly approaching his gormless face.

Yates noticed it just before contact, and managed to swiftly dodge to his left.
He emptied a hard left jab to the man's ribs.

"GAH" he yelled
"Yeah. That... I've been told that hurts." Douglas tried his damnedest to sound cool
The man responded with a sweep kick.

He fell hard, his right shoulder and temple taking the brunt of the blow.
He let loose an agonizing high pitched scream.
The man didn't waver, and walked up to Douglas' limp body, kicking him in the stomach repeatedly.

"Johnny!" The woman yelled. "Johnny, Jesus Christ, that's enough!"
Yates, vision fading, saw the woman grab 'Johnny's' arm.
"That's enough." She said, her face completely free of any wound, "Just take it."

The man leaned over Douglas, reached in his back pocket and pulled out his wallet.
"Wow, one hundred forty... seven bucks, not bad, kid."
The man and the woman left Yates on the road and disappeared into the night.

Wha... What just happened...?

He managed to get himself back to his feet and stumbled to his car.
He grabbed his phone from the cupholder and dialed 911.

"911, what is your emergency?" the operator's pleasant voice was a surprise.

"I... I was robbed... An.. And I think my arm is broken."

Coming from someone who knew Yates was getting his arm broken: This update surprised me greatly.

Yeah... That sucks.

That's why you shouldn't be driving at 3 o'clock in the morning in Chattanooga

“ALRIGHT LADIES, LISTEN UP,” Desmond Jacobs stood on a chair in the Lookouts’ clubhouse. “We’re without Douglas today. He just ‘fell and broke his arm.’ That’s some bullshit. DOESN’T MATTER. He’s out, Snow’s in.”

Vincent Snow let out a cheer, barely audible.

“Shut up, Snow.” Jacobs, annoyed by Snow’s outburst, continued on, “Now, look, we didn’t do so good last year, and this year sure as hell isn’t looking to be any better. I mean, seriously, you guys. This is goddamn professional baseball, not your *(censored)* Sunday slow pitch softball league. GET IT TOGETHER. WE’RE 4-7, THAT’S unacceptable…” His voice abruptly tapered off in response to Montgomery’s raised hand.

“The *(censored)* do you want, Montgomery?”
“Why isn’t there a hot tub in here?”

Jacobs, dumbfounded, struggled to find words to express his annoyance “wha… What the *(censored)* does that have to do with anything?”

“I just think we’d be better rested for our games if we had a way to relax after them, y’know, like a hot tub. After my high school games I always went in my father’s. It helped-”
“Montgomery… SHUT THE *(censored)* UP! Christ, it’s always something with you, isn’t it? Is it your life’s mission to be the biggest cunt in the room wherever you go? I… Holy hell, I’m shaking I’m so angry. It’s been eleven *(censored)* games, and I already can’t stand you. JESUS Christ, you better get called up soon.”

A moment of silence.

“Goddammit, I don’t even remember what the *(censored)* I was talking about. Just get out there don’t embarrass yourselves. Again.”

Jacobs started to make his way out of the clubhouse, then stopped and turned around.

“Oh, and the lineup card’s on the wall.”

The players scrambled over to the small piece of paper on the wall.

Ryan Taylor, at age 24, was tied for the fourth oldest player on the team and the second most experienced. On the mound for his third start of the year, he sported a 5.25 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 12.0 innings. His curveball looked flat, his slider wouldn’t bite, and his fastball velocity had hardly improved from the low 90’s since being called up from single A in 2011.

So, when he retired the first nine batters of the game, he didn’t much care that Generals’ lefty Andrew Heaney had done so as well.

To start the fourth and the second time through the Jacksonville lineup, Taylor and Josh Randall worked together to get the opposing leadoff man down 1-2. Randall, looking for a purpose pitch, signalled for a curveball in the dirt. Taylor wound up and let it fly, but the ball seemed to float over the middle of the plate at the hitter’s knees. Perhaps because he recognized the pitch as a curve but it failed to break, he blooped it weakly into the air, though well over the head of Danilo Ribeiro. It was immediately apparent that Robert Tomlinson in center would have the only shot at making the play. That is, if he had any shot at all.

Tomlinson got a good jump and was the second fastest player on the Lookouts, but he’d grown accustomed to left after giving way to Yates Douglas at the start of the season. As he neared the ball, and the ball neared the ground, what does he do?
