Monday, June 4th at 5:30 P.M. through 7:23 P.M.

I arrived at the field for our first game at 5:30, just over an hour and a half before game time. Scott, Andy Barrett, Mike Conway, a couple outfielders, and Sam Decker, who I assumed would be the starting pitcher, were the only others already there. I jogged around for a bit and then ran some sprints before stretching and joining Mike in a game of catch.

"Which of us do you think'll be starting?" he asked as we threw back and forth.

"Not sure," I answered, "coach doesn't really seem to prefer one of us over the other." This was somewhat of a lie, as I truly felt that he preferred me to Mike, but I kept my mouth shut.

One by one, more players continued to show up, with everyone but Shaun Shubert, a right fielder with a great arm, there by 6:00. Shaun eventually showed up at around 6:45, while everyone else was taking fielding practice. Coach chewed him out pretty bad, and Tommy Ford, one of our worst players and our other right fielder, lit up with the hope of starting.

A few minutes before game time, the lineup was posted:

1. CF - Grady Jones
2. 3B - Justin Epley
3. 1B - Carlos Galvez
4. LF - Mark Kellum
5. DH - Mike Conway
6. SS - James Glass
7. C - Colin Zumoor
8. 2B - Rafael Ramirez
9. RF - Tommy Ford

SP - Sam Decker

Mike came up behind me, "I guess you won out," he said. "Thank God for the DH." I turned around and found Scott.

"Colin's starting," I told him.

He shook his head and muttered, "I know."

I wasn't sure what to say; I had never been good in these situations. "Sorry, dude," was all I could come up with. He nodded and wished me luck.

Before long, the game started, and I headed out onto the field. Sam got 'em 1-2-3, with two strikeouts and a weak ground ball to first. I jogged in to get my hitting gear and headed out to take some swings with Grady and Carlos while checking out the opposition's starter. He was throwing about 90, maybe a little under. Nothing that couldn't be handled. Grady stepped up to the plate and was down 0-2 when he dribbled a grounder towards third. The third baseman charged and attempted a barehanded play, but missed, and we had our leadoff man on first.

I looked down to coach and watched as he signed for Grady to steal. The pitch came, and he took off like a shot. I took my stride...

DECISION TIME!
A. Swing
B. Take
C. Attempt a drag bunt

Sorry about the long wait for this. I'm thinking the updates will get more interesting now that games have begun. I also added a few more things to the bottom.

I'll go with B, and don't worry about it taking so long, I completely understand!

Also, I may have to steal one of your ideas for the bottom

Monday, June 4th at 7:23 P.M. through June 5th at 12:26 P.M.

I laid off the pitch, which was called a strike. The catcher fired down to second, but it wasn't even close; Grady was safe by a mile. After a ball and another strike, I fought off a curveball that bounced towards second. The second baseman fielded it and tossed to to first, while Grady pulled into third. Well, I thought, at least I moved him up.

We went back and forth with the other team the rest of the game, eventually being down 5-4 in the bottom of the 9th. I had already singled in my third at-bat after striking out in my second, and now I was up with Tommy Ford on third and one out. I decided to try to hit the fly ball that would score him, and I swung at a high fastball on a 2-1 count. Unfortunately, I didn't hit it hard enough and Tommy was unable to advance. Carlos Galvez then grounded out to first, and the game was over.

I arrived home at 10:45, and went to bad at about 11:30.

The next day, I got up at 9:00. We had the day off, so I made myself a bowl of cereal and watched some TV. By the time lunch came around, I opened the fridge and realized I was just about out of food, so I headed down to the grocery store.

Once there, I picked up approximately $50 worth of food and headed to the checkout lane. I noticed the checkout girl was pretty cute...

"Your total is $52.91."

DECISION TIME!
A. Just pay and leave
B. Introduce yourself
C. Introduce yourself and ask her out
D. Be clever and write your phone number on a piece of paper and slide it between the bills

Monday, June 5th at 12:26 P.M.

I pulled three 20 dollar bills out of my wallet. "Here you go," I checked her name tag, "Catherine with a 'C'," I said with a smile.

She laughed, "Thank you..." she paused. I was confused for a moment, then I realized what she was getting at.

"Justin," I told her, then added, "with a 'J'."

She laughed again. "You're funny, Justin with a 'J'," she said as she inserted the last of my items into a bag. "Can I count on you shopping here again? I mean, where else are you going to get your," she picked up a box, "Count Chocula cereal?"

I chuckled, "Yeah, I'll be here again," I promised.

"Good," she said. As I walked away, she threw in, "Enjoy your Count Chocula!"

I smiled and waved, leaving the store in an incredible mood.

Monday, June 5th at 8:36 P.M.

Later, I decided to work out before I went to sleep, doing so for about an hour (POW +4).

Tuesday, June 6th at 7:05 P.M.

Game 2 of our series against the GCL Orioles began the next day with another 7:05 start. The lineup was the same as the game before, with the exception of Shaun Shubert getting his spot back, as he managed not to show up late this time.

Obviously, my first at-bat came in the first inning. Grady had struck out, but to me, their pitcher didn't look all that good; he had missed a couple of hanging curveballs. I stepped into the box.

DECISION TIME!
A. Swing for the fences
B. Swing normally
C. Try to work a walk
D. Attempt a drag bunt

Tuesday, June 6th at 7:22 P.M.

I worked the count to 2-1, and then jumped on a fastball. A line drive leaped off my bat, but right at the third baseman for an out.

By the end of the game, I was 0 for 4, and we ended up losing 6 to 1.

Wednesday, June 7th at 7:20 P.M.

I decided to be patient, but the first two pitches were fastballs on the outside corner. With the count at 0-2, I managed to fight off a curveball and then took a fastball high for ball one. I immediately recognized another curveball on the next pitch and kept my hands back, slapping a single to left field. (Contact +1, Eval +1, Tough Out +5)

Through 7 innings we had just 3 hits, but Jeff Ross was keeping us in the game. The score was 1-0 Orioles, and I was 1 for 3, when I got up to the plate in the bottom of the 8th. Tim Hankins, pinch-running for Shaun Shubert, was on first with one out. I got the signal to swing away and stepped back into the batters' box. The other team's starting pitchers was still on the mound but getting tired, and he threw three straight fastballs way out of the zone. Coach gave me the take sign, and the next pitch was right down the middle for strike one. Okay, I thought, still a hitter's count.

DECISION TIME!
A. Swing away
B. Take

Wednesday, June 7th at 7:20 P.M.

I decided to take again, and the next fastball was right on the edge for a strike. I called for time and gathered my composure before stepping back into the box.

I almost started to swing at the next pitch, a curveball, before recognizing it and letting it bounce off the plate for ball four. (Coach Eval +1)

The Orioles called for a pitching change, and with Galvez coming up to the plate, brought in a lefty. It didn't matter though; Carlos hit his first home run of the season, giving us a 3-1 lead. Jordan Vasquez came in and shut the door easily, striking out 2, and just like that we had our first win of the season.

After everyone got showered and changed, Mike invited me out to celebrate.

DECISION TIME!
A. Go
B. Don't go
