Yes, I am putting today's lyricists (loosely using that term) way above Shakespeare in terms of quality and depth of prose.

Sarcastically.

But hey, it's not usually the people singing (or talking) those words that wrote them...its usually 4-12 guys behind the scenes that did that. All striving to develop a hook, something that - when combined with an image of cute girl or raunchy tart or rebellious boy - will resonate with kids 12-19 and cause their tune to be played ad nauseum in shopping malls. Yaaaay music industry today!

the next lines:

Why do rappers rap in past tense?
It's veteran
They think De La Soul and David Letterman

where "Aspens" actually is meant to rhyme with "past tense", and "veteran" with "Letterman"

Dilated Peoples are actually quite clever with their lyrics

also

yes but that doesn't qualify here - certainly with say Swift or Cyrus or any big pop star, but DP flies a bit under the radar and I'm pretty sure they write most/all of their own stuff

Yeah, there are also a lot of people who do their own writing.

EDIT: hold up miley cyrus is actually a talented singer at least

taylor swift is...well...I mean, the people can sing a little. But with studio work and autotune it's all dressed up. Who knows what Cyrus or Swift's true talent level is. Cyrus has the genes at least. But odds are that when you hit the open mics around a college town, or even a middle-sized city, you're gonna find people that - purely vocally speaking - are as talented or more talented. Often better songwriters, too.

But if they aren't attractive, rail skinny, able to dance, or willing to sell their soul, they won't be as famous. That's just how it is. When I was younger I didn't have a lot of exposure - small town, internet was still young lol...so it was either music I got from TV/radio, or friends...so some exposure to other things but not much. With college came a ton more influences and appreciation for different sounds...now that I'm in my 30s I can check out artists and music from any genre locally, or research them on the internet. A lot of old fogies say 'blah everything sucks today' about music, but it's not true...the 'pop' stuff has devolved quite a bit, but if you root around you can find good music in just about any genre.

When I was like 15, Bush was my favorite band. Could listen to that CD all day...I felt a real connection. Now I listen to it and am just disgusted...simple, bad lyrics...it was a product of my age, the musical atmosphere (grunge), and just not knowing a lot about music. 17 years later I've spent a lot of time getting my ear right, working with musicians, recording, and getting an appreciation for true innovators and genius.

When I first dove into music big at 16-17, my uncle would always tell me how great the Beatles were, or Led Zeppelin...I just wanted him to shut up so bad. They weren't relevant. It was the 90s. Maybe they influenced things, but that didn't matter TODAY, you know? I had to sort of discover them for myself, 5 and 10 years later, and digest where they were in the scope of music at the time to really get the impact. That's part of what bites today...back then, you had pop stars that were innovators and great musicians all in one. Nowadays you don't have many - Muse is a great all around band, really impressive show and blend of sounds, but most everyone else is just doing one thing to death. Sometimes that's kind of sad - you know there are musical geniuses out there, but you have to work and dig to find them.

/diatribe

Wow...that's a well written post with a lot of good points there, AOW. Well done.

I can attest to the fact that there are more talented singers out there in the smaller towns/regions. I come from a school whose choir program was locally and regionally acclaimed, some even saying one of the best high school choir programs in the state of Michigan. We had a ton of talented singers, and some may or may not be as famous as the famous singers today, but they are talented in at least one (or two, if you count a few of the people's acting ability) aspect(s) of entertainment.

I know how much music you loved back when you were younger now sounds like it sucks ass. I can't think of examples, but I know there should be a few of them from my childhood that, if I listen to them today, I think, "holy God, that sucks."
