That is true, one play in one game can't be analyzed like that. But on the whole, Rollins is a better shortstop defensively than Jeter. Either look at any of the modern fielding metrics or just watch them play over the course of the season. Rollins has the better arm and range, primarily due to being almost 4.5 years younger.

I know you can't judge a player for just one play, and I know maybe even Ozzie Smith wouldn't have been able to make it, but follow my reasoning: if Jeter, who is slower than Rollins, got to the ball, then Rollins should've gotten to the ball, too, and because he's faster, he should've been able to make the play. And what you said is true, not just in baseball, but in any sport or in any subject, you can't put yourself in place of another and said you'd have done a better job. Sorry if I sound like that.

I don't agree with your reasoning, at least not in the way you worded it. I think what you're trying to say is this: if you were Davey Johnson, you would start Rollins at SS over Jeter.

i'm just going to say that there was an old joke that new fans thought jeter's first name was pastadiving because the phrase "past a diving jeter" was said so often.

anyways, i have to agree with DrMario, although he DID dive right over the ball.

if 2 guys made the exact same plays, errors, etc. but the first guy did it with flair, barehanding balls and stuff, you would always say the first guy was a better fielder.
think about it.

I wouldn't know who would be better because they still don't make the plays.

If I were Davey Johnson, indeed I'd start Rollins at SS rather than Jeter because Rollins is a better fielder, at least statwise. I think Jeter started at SS due to his popularity, which isn't good, if USA intends to win this thing. But hey, what do I know? I just like watching the games.

I'm going with rockbard on this one. Rollins is in the top 3 at his position. Jeter is below a lot of people.

Yes, I think most people would agree that Jeter's defense is subpar, except for Yankee fans. Oh, the uproar among blogs when Jeter was named among the worst defensive shortstops...

As for rockbard's assertion that Reyes's defense is "very very overrated" as well, I beg to differ. While his range factor was pretty bad in 2006, it was higher than the league average in 2007 and 2008. (That's per game played, not per 9 innings.)

And he has a total of +27 in Bill James's plus/minus rankings for 2006-2008 (+13, +13, +1), good for 7th highest during that period.

lol.
was looking at my sports illustrated, this week's sign of the apocalypse is this:
"A Boston bar is serving an A-Roid cocktail: a shot of tequila, with a spicy tomato juice chaser served in a syringe."

Ok, I'd rephrase it: Reyes' defense is not as good as everybody thinks. True, he's gotten better. I know little about sabermetrics, so I wouldn't know if there's a stat for relays throws, but that, even though not as important as actual hit fielding, still is an integral part of being a shortstop. He doesn't relay very well, and that could have prevented a few runs. Still, he's getting better, with experience, he will become a premier SS.

BIAS WARNING!
I would say that Ruiz* is underrated. The guy can catch, esp. that slider that Lidge throws. Lidge had an outstanding season, and Ruiz helped big-time with that.
Also, i would say good players on bad teams in general are underrated. Think, for all the credit logoria (evan, that is  ) is getting, would he be getting it if the ray's had had another typical perennial cellar-dweller season? Probably not. Lot's of other guys too, like Ryan Zimmerman and David Dejesus. Neither are amazing super-stars, but they'd get more credit on better teams

*I finally got his jersey! I'll put a pic up soon.

And speaking of Evan Longoria (RANDOM ALERT!!) he is not related to Eva Longoria, for the record.

Reminds me of a story I saw on a website called sikids.com--- (Gather 'round folks, grandpa dish is gonna tell you a story!)  (Get it?)

About a while back, last season, the website's baseball columnist, nicknamed "the Brain", made a list of her most overrated players, and one of them was Jason Varitek. What happened next was referred to everyone on sikids.com as...Varitekgate. The announcement made many people, mainly red sox fans, angry, and started to say things, in the ballpark of: "Varitek isn't overrated!" This went to the baseball columnist, the fantasy columnist, and the Low Budget Fantasy All-Stars writer, too! This led to all of them sitting together to think about what they've done, but ultimately decided that Varitek was overrated. Sorry to upset you red sox fans, here, but anyways...THE END.

Still sorry to upset Red Sox fans.
