The Marlins and the Royals HAVE to keep a small payroll because they don't have the resources that the larger markets have access to. If you don't think that MLB needs a salary cap then you might as well dump every small market team and move them to a larger market.

Allow me to expand on my post. At the end of 2007, the Marlins received $30 million from revenue sharing. On opening day 2008, their payroll was a little over $21 million, which was $9 million less than the previous season. You don't think that's strange?

During the eight years that Loria has owned the Marlins, they have received about $200 million from revenue sharing. The Marlins don't have to keep a small payroll. They simply choose to.

As for the Royals, they also don't spend their revenue sharing dollars. And when they increased their payroll after a few years of it being level, they didn't spend it wisely. Two years ago, they gave Gil Meche $55 million over 5 years, with a no-trade clause to boot. One year ago, Jose Guillen $36 million over 3 years. More than one-third of their 2008 payroll was committed to just two players. If you're going to do that, they had better be difference makers.

My point was that a salary cap won't make a difference unless the revenue sharing plan is improved to do what it was designed to do.

OMG, just to add on to Red Sox misery, Yankees signed kevin cash to a minor league contract. Ha, no one to catch the knuckleball now, lol. Red Sox seriously need to resign Jason.

Heh, just remember who can catch the Knuckler better than him and he is a free agent.

I think beacause he should have good offense but he wasn't producing so he was traded to Padres. We traded for him back, continued to struggle, released him, is now a Free Agent.

Well, if they decide to pass on me, they need to sign Mirabelli or they could be in a lot of trouble.

I don't like that they signed Cash. Kevin Cash, apparantly, is supposed to replace Moeler as the back-up to back-up catcher Molina if Posada gets injured and Molina can't catch every day, although this is only untill prospect Francisco Cervil is ready to take Cash's place (Cervil probably won't be a future starting catcher, but he looks like a good back-up once Molina's gone. There's another catcher further down the line in single A who looks fantastic so far. Pending injury, he's on target to make it to the majors in like 2-3 years, although you never know with a guy at that level.)
Still, I think signing Cash was malicious of the Yankees, I don't like them playing that way. I think they might have just been taking him from the Sox, it doesn't make sense. I mean the Sox don't have a knuckleball catcher anymore, but they'll probably just trade for one.

Mabye the Yanks are playing dirty after the Sox beat them to the wild card, so they are trying to elimiate all chances they have to win, and force them to get a catcher that can catch a knuckleball once every 5 days.

They'll sign Mirabelli before we trade for one.

Cervil is sort of like Dusty Brown and George Kottoras. Great prospects, just not good enough to be starters.

Wow, we are actually going to agree on something!

How is it malicious to sign a guy to a *minor league* contract to be 3rd-4th string catcher? If the Red Sox actually wanted him it isn't like it would have taken much to keep him.

Perhaps (most likely) I'm seeing a lot more in this then is actually happening. It just seems like the Yankees don't need him at all, and now the Red Sox have no knuckle-ball catcher that I know of. Without Mirabeli, I'm pretty sure they though they would have signed cash. Now Varitek (if he is resigned, which I'd be surprised if he doesn't) will probably have to catch Wakefield,, and he doesn't have any experience with Knuckle-balls.

As was previously mentioned, the Sox nontendered Cash, avoiding arbitration. If they really wanted to keep him, I'd imagine he would've been offered arbitration. He was a backup catcher who made $400k in 2008. Even if the Sox lost the arbitration case, how much would he have cost them?
