Lmao I find it downright impressive that Rangers always knows just the right buttons to push to annoy LGM.

Not sure why people think that now is the time to pile on the cubs? i mean, they waaay overachieved and look to be a behemoth in the near future. Rooting against them is just going to be painful for the next ~6 years or so, as they fight the Cards for the NL Central crown year in and year out.

Specifically the dudes that are White Sox fans…I mean, a team from your city is in the playoffs. Why would you not pull for them? I mean, if you don't care or stay out of it, that's one level down..but to actively root AGAINST them, and to gleefully roll in it when they lose?? What is it about Chicago that has this south side/north side division, and teams' fans sort of hate each other? Do NYY fans HATE the Mets, and vice versa? Heck if the As fans don't pull for SFG in the playoffs thats a little weird, right? If Boston still had an NL team, and my Red Sox were eliminated, guess what - I'd be pulling for that NL team!

Why is Chicago this center of hatred? Seems irrational and a tad immature. Maybe Cubs fans were rooting against the ChiSox in '05?

I would never root for the Cubs because they're my team's ONLY rival. The Yankees' biggest rival is the Red Sox, so they would rather see the Mets win rather than the Red Sox win. Imagine how painful it was for the Yankees when the Red Sox stunned them in '04. The White Sox have no other rivals besides the Cubs. There's no way I or any other White Sox fan would cheer for our biggest rival. However, I do agree that some of us have gone insane with all the bashing.

I admit that I was hoping the Cubs would lose, but I wasn't going out of my way to bitch and moan. I think it's hard for southsiders because it's obvious that Chicago doesn't need two baseball teams. The Cubs were ranked 6th in attendance while the Sox were ranked 26th. Granted, U.S. Cellular Field is located in an awful area, but it's apparent that they are indeed the "second city's second team". We already hear about the Cubs so much, now it's even more. The Cubs fans from what I've heard were on us even after we won the World Series back in '05, and I'm certain they were rooting against us. When the Cubs finally win (not if because it will happen), it will be a rough time for Sox fans. Cubs fans are going to be on us so hard when that does happen. We are given so much about how our attendance and stadium is so goddamn awful. Also, the Sox won't be going anywhere in the next few years, making it extremely painful. The organization is clearly fine with taking the backseat to the Cubs. Everyone in the organization needs to be gone in order for there to be any success on the southside. I don't think we are ready for the Cubs to win yet. I myself am preparing for it, because it is inevitable.

I don't hate the Cubs, and I never will. They didn't underperform in the series, but the Mets dominated throughout. When you never trail in 4 games, you must be doing something right.

I think that too many people bought the Cubs hype and underestimated the Mets is all. Even though I must admit that I never saw this Mets outburst coming, it's a year ahead of schedule.

@ LGM - they're lucky do to do it now while they have Cespedes and Murphy on board. With them gone, and Wright/Cuddyer a year older? I don't have a lot of faith in that offense with just streaky Duda. Mets need to get bats. Pitching has stood up tho.

@ GoTwins - Oakland's stadium is in a terrible area - Ive been there once and felt like I was in danger. San Fran is clearly the older, more established, more successful and storied franchise. Their stadium is nicer, newer, they draw more fans from a better part of town. But there's still no serious rivalry - heck the Giants are busy with Dodger fights, there's no need for more rivals.

Yankees/Red Sox are hundreds of miles away, different cities, and the SAME league. A rivalry makes sense there.

Cubs have REAL rivals, 4 teams in the NL Central since they've all been dominant within the last 8 years (Brewers, Reds, Pirates, Cardinals). Check out the Tootblan guy on twitter or the "Doubting Theo" tumblr page - they have rivals all over media, too. Cubs have been the NL's punching bag for 5+ seasons, and the laughingstock of a curse for the 100+ years before that. Why oh why on earth would they need ANOTHER set of rivals, dudes from their own CITY fer crying out loud, also wishing them failure?

It just seems to pile on when there's no need.

Also, the White Sox are just fine - before this season, they loaded up on trades for vets, and FAs to help their core of Abreu and Sale and Quintana and A-Ram. It misfired terribly, with M. Cabrera and LaRoche and Samardzija all doing poorly, and guys like Adam Eaton having a solid-but-not-superstar year. But they have a new pitcher in Rodon, who I got to see absolutely tear it up here in Charlotte at AAA. If things break their way next year, with a shrewd FA pickup or two, the weak AL Central could be theirs. Avisail Garcia hit 7 freakin homers in 46 games - thats good for anyone not named Daniel Murphy.

One season of bad breaks doesn't mean your team is in the dumps. Root against the Tigers with their bloated payroll and V-Mart and Miggy DH combo, or Twins with their goober Torii Hunter, or the Royals for being a crappy team that keeps surviving the playoffs for some reason (altho their good defense and Paulo Orlando are something to appreciate). No need to go waaay outside the AL borders to try to find a new adversary that has fans used to losing for 109 straight years, especially when you got a WS just a decade ago!

Like I said, the aftermath of the Cubs winning the championship will be too much for a lot of us to handle. We won't stop hearing about it for years. I think our real allegiance is with our team, not just our city. And like LGM said, "never root for a rival".

Also, I think you have a good point. The talent is there, but can the White Sox perform? They've been a major disappointment ever since September 2012. I have no faith in Robin Ventura.

I personally would think it's a cop out to root for a winning team that's from the same city as your favorite team.

However, white sox fans seem incredibly butthurt since they're a completely irrelevant franchise at the moment.

Lol yep a lot of them are butthurt. But Cubs fans were the same way 10 years ago. It goes both ways.

yeah of course. there is not one fanbase in any sport that doesn't have fans that get butthurt.

like sports can make people act like little kids sometimes. but so does stuff like star wars or one direction.

some people just get too attached to certain things and then take it out on other people over the internet.

Can I just put my 2 cents in this real quick? I don't subscribe this idea of never rooting for a rival because I don't see rivalries as pure bitter hatred. Having a rival makes the game more fun to watch because you want to beat them that much more badly, and you learn to respect someone who you can compete against on a regular basis. I definitely don't represent every Cubs fan, but I did root for the White Sox back in 2005, and I was pretty happy when they won because I knew it would mean a lot to a lot of Chicagoans.

And then every single White Sox fan was a total dick about it and held it over Cubs fans' heads and made fun of the team for being cursed.

Yeah, I'm still bitter about that one.

I can't really say anything about that because I wasn't old enough to really understand back then. All I know is that when the Cubs win, it will upset me a little bit, but I'll give them the credit where it is due. Theo and Jed assembled a great team in really just a short amount of time.

Yeah it's scary how good this Cubs team is at such a young age. If they don't end the curse in the next six years, I'm not sure what needs to happen for them to finally win.
