The scrimmage began with Lake on the mound. The young lefty struck out two batters, then induced a weak grounder for the third out. (Lake: XP +3)

In the second inning, Anthony came in to pitch, and struck one batter out, but allowed two hits, including an RBI double. (Anthony: XP -1)

In the third, Stanislaus walked, then stole second, eventually coming around to score the tying run. (Stanislaus: XP +3)

In the fourth, Johnny came up with the bases loaded, but struck out swinging; the next batter singled to score two runs. (Johnny: XP -1)

In the fifth, Jimmy entered to pitch, and left with one out and the bases loaded; the next pitcher allowed one of the runners to score, but stranded the other two. (Jimmy: XP -1)

In the sixth, another new pitcher entered for the 12-year-olds, a lefty who had constantly bragged about how hard he threw. He promptly beaned the first batter with the aforementioned heater, then gave up two hits sandwiched around a double-play grounder, resulting in the first batter coming around to score. He struck out the last batter, but the game was called a draw when a trio of Padres players showed up out of nowhere, buckets of balls and markers in tow so they could sign autographs for everyone.

The players who visited the campers were usually fringy major-leaguers or players on the disabled list, and this pattern held true once again as the trio of Tyson Ross, Austin Hedges, and Adam Rosales paid a visit to the camp.

Each camper received a ball with signatures of all three players, plus signed baseball cards for each individual player, in addition to a special goody bag with some other treats, discounts, and collectibles.

With time ticking down on the summer, the six WGMS teammates who had taken on the library’s reading challenge were fighting laziness hard to complete the challenge.

Stanislaus had finished the list a few weeks prior, but was just now turning it in for his reward: another small goody bag full of school supplies. (Stanislaus: GPA +0.05)

Ug was struggling to finish the last book on the list, but just got it done in time to collect his goody bag. (Ug: GPA +0.05)

Harold breezed through the last five books on the list after summer ball ended. (Harold: GPA +0.05)

Johnny managed to wedge his reading into his schedule, planning out a few chapters each night even as he travelled and went to camp. (Johnny: GPA +0.05)

Jimmy likewise plotted out his summer reading, but went a little overboard and ended up with nothing to read and nothing to do the last couple weeks of summer. (Jimmy: GPA +0.05)

Cody, meanwhile, was so busy with hockey that he only finished half of the books on the list. He smacked his head with frustration as he picked up the half-completed challenge list from his desk, tearing it in two and letting the pieces fall to the floor. (Cody: GPA +0.01, XP -1)

Xander furthered his dream of one day becoming a pro skater, attending several competitions (although only entering two). The best moment of his summer, however, came in early August, when the 2016 Olympics started, and with it came the announcement that several sports, among them skateboarding (and baseball!), would be added to the 2020 Olympics.

Matthew, meanwhile, hung out with his kid brother the rest of the summer, dragging him across town to attend a handful of museums and shows.

Lake also hung out at home, realizing just how much he missed his partner-in-crime and twin sister as she was off at arts camp. But a couple games of Power Pros got his mind off things, just as they always did — “Another year older, another year better at Power Pros!” he would always happily exclaim on his birthday.

And wasn’t that the same speech as last year?

While the Walker Grove Middle School principal’s opening announcements may not have changed from last year, at least two things had changed: for one, Xander, Matthew, and Cody were all in their seats when the first bell rang; and for another, there was a new kid in the class.

“My name’s Brady Hewitt, and I just moved here from Florida,” a boy clad in a tie-dye tank top and plaid-patterned boardshorts said quietly. His straw-colored hair was tied back into a top-knot, at least for the time being.

Brady then took his seat in the very back row of Mr. Sanders’s classroom, one of two seventh-grade homerooms. He didn’t know anybody, and given his bashful nature, he probably wouldn’t get to know anybody unless they came to him.

After their first three classes, the seventh-graders were dismissed for recess — one class later than the sixth-graders, and one earlier than the eighth-graders. As everybody looked around the playground, they noticed the new equipment. There was a brand-new area with two four-square courts, a new basketball court, a new jungle gym, and some other various playground items.
