They went back to the apartment complex, and hung out in LaMarcus’s apartment.

John turned back and ran towards the gunshots, not away from them as he had been taught. He entered an apartment building, where he took the elevator to the third floor. “Get down!” someone screamed at him. John dived out of the elevator and under a table in the hallway. He watched from there as a bunch of black kids duked it out. One looked familiar, and was way bigger than anyone else. After he beat everyone up, the big guy put them all in the elevator and sent it down to the first floor. “What was that about?” John said as he got up. “That, son, was a gang battle,” the guy said. “I’m Kerry Washington, by the way.” “I’m John Martinez.” “So, uh, listen, we’re looking for new members in our gang, the Tulip Tribe. It’s, uh, named after my football team.” “You go to Powerful High, too? And you play football too?” “Yeah, I’m a d-lineman,” Kerry told him through heavy breaths. “So, uh, anyway, you wanna join the Tribe?” “What’s in it for me?” John asked. “Well, you get me on your good side. Plus, all new members get a pack of cigs on me,” Kerry told him, pulling out a box of Marlboros. He took one out, lit it, and took a puff. “I’ll think about it. Can you give me your phone number, so I can call you when I decide?” Kerry recited his number, and John left.

Congratulations,” his cross-country coach said, handing him a red tank top and shorts - the team’s uniform. He shook the coach’s hand and went home, where he tried on the uniform. It fit perfectly, but William took it off and put on a fresh T-shirt - turquoise, his favorite color - and shorts. He picked up the iPod that had been charging, put in his earbuds, and hit “play”, triggering the iPod to pick a song from his playlist. The first song was by DIIV.

Gunnin’ for the Gallery, Part 3

Gunner decided he would go back to the orphanage he called home. Before he could get anywhere, he was stopped by a girl with curly, black hair, wearing a pink shirt and pink jeans. “Hey, can you do me a favor?” she asked. Before Gunner could respond, she said, “Great! Go down to the copy room and make fifty copies of this.” “Five-zero?” he asked. “Yes, you idiot! Now go before I have my dad expel you!” Gunner took the paper and ran toward the library. Once he got in there, he went up to the second floor, where he found a copier. After making one copy, Gunner told the machine to make 49 more, then sat down to read the paper. It was a flyer for a huge party in the school gym, with music, food, and games! Once he finished, he made one extra copy, stuffed it in his pocket, and went back to the girl to give her the copies. She didn’t thank him.
Gunner then went to the orphanage and had a snack before sitting down to think about the party.

The black eye he had wasn’t going to go away anytime soon, but his bruises could be covered up by wearing long sleeves. If my mom sees this black eye, she’s gonna flip, Ben thought.
