March 20

I decided to try as hard as I could, and I got through some of it, but the half a mile really threw me off. And the sprints didn't help either, I was only able to do 3 of them before I felt as if I was going to vomit.
Jack finished them no problem, and Lawrence did everything but 1 of the sprints.
I guess I did alright.

At least the second day is over now though. The last day is tomorrow, I'll really have to step it up if I want to make it.

March 21

The final bell rang once again, and I was off to the field.
Lawrence was there at the door, "Hey Bryan." he said
"Hey Lawrence."
I continued on into the locker room, and saw all of the kids trying out, knowing well that only 15 of us will be on the team.
And I hope that one of them is me.

I walked down to the field, and coach greeted me, "Murphy, you know what we're doing today, right?"
"Uh... No." I replied
"We'll be having a quick scrimmage, 3 innings."
"Uh... Okay. But aren't there too many people for just 2 teams?"
"That's why there will be 4!"
"Oh, of course."
"I'll split everyone up once they all get down here."

Everyone then got down there.

"Alright boys, we'll be having a scrimmage. This is your last chance to impress me, so I wish you all good luck. Here are the teams:

Team 1:
1. Jack Kent - LF
2. Russell Edmond - 1B
3. Charles Davis - RF
4. William Cruz - SS
5. Richard Davidson - 2B
6. Ken Walker - C
7. Carmelo Feliciano - CF
8. Bryan Murphy - 3B
9. James Strickland - P

Team 2:
1. Lawrence Marlin - 3B
2. Carlos Queen - C
3. Lawrence Jackson - 1B
4. John Wilson - CF
5. James Lee - 2B
6. Jonathan Moore - SS
7. Scott Kinney - RF
8. Tim Bain - LF
9. Michael Richardson - P

You two will be playing each other, head down to the field first." Coach instructed
Again, I'm first. Awesome.

We're to take the field first, and Lawrence is leading off, he has incredible bat speed, and is known to hit sharp line drives to third.

And, just like that, he's hit a rocket my way, but it look's like it may be too far from to my left to catch.

What do I do?
A. Let the shortstop get it (+1, -3)
B. Make a dive (+5, -5)
C. Make a stab at it, and hope for the best (+4, -3)
D. Serenade the ball with a lovely song (+1, -17)

If the song's good enough to distract the runner and the SS throws him out. Duh. :D

I took a stab at it, and it hit the top of my glove, but, luckily, William Cruz got there, and threw out Lawrence from deep in the hole.
"Phew." I said.
Coach gave me a look, and I couldn't quite make it out, hopefully he was okay with my decision.

Strickland managed to strike the next two guys out, and we got out of the inning.

Fast forward to the third.
I'm coming up with guy on first and an out, we're down by one run. Strickland is garbage at hitting, so I have to do something if we have any chance of continuing this inning. Richardson, who is the best pitcher here, no doubt, has been crushing us, he's let up only 2 hits so far, and they've both been singles...

He has a mean slider, and can throw in the mid 80's with his fastball. His curveball is average, but he hardly ever uses it.

What do I do?
A. Swing at the first pitch (+4, -8 [if hit into a double play -15])
B. Wait for the slider (+3, -3)
C. Swing at the first fastball thrown (+3, -3)
D. Wait for curveball (+1, -3)
E. Say, "you're too good for me" and promptly leave tryouts, and never be seen again (-25)

What is the point of all these options with a massive loss and no possible gain? They'll never get picked if the player knows they can't help.

I decided to wait for his slider.
First pitch was a fastball up and in, too high, ball 1.
Second pitch was another fastball, right down the middle, I didn't swing, strike 1. (-1)
Third pitch was his slider, though I could've sworn it was a fastball, I noticed the break late, and took a hack at it, hitting it between the shortstop and third baseman!

There were then runners on first and second, Strickland struck out, and Jack came up to the plate.
"Here we go Jack!" I yelled from first
Richardson is looking like he regained his composure quickly, and he threw a blazing fastball to Jack, who ended up grounding the ball to the shortstop deep in the hole, he threw me out at second to end the scrimmage.

"Alright you guys, I'll be calling everyone in one-by-one to tell you if you've made the team. Go to the locker room and wait for your name."

Everyone headed down to the locker room, and first to go was Jonathan Aster, he didn't make it. Great start.
The room slowly filtered down to the ones who had made it, as the ones who didn't left for home, saddened.
Jack was called in, and of course he made it, he was assigned the uniform number 14.

We got down to the M's, and Lawrence went in. He made it. And he was the starting third baseman. And given the number 2.
"Murphy." Coach said, I walked in and sat down in front of him.
"Alright kid. You're good, and kept a good attitude even with such tough competition as Lawrence, so I want you on the team, but we'll be putting you at second, how's that sound?"

What do I say?
A. No, third is my position (+3, -1)
B. Okay coach, thank you! (+4)
C. No, I'll fight it out with Lawrence (+3, -3)
D. K (+4, -2)

"How's that sound?" Coach asked
"Okay coach, thank you!" I gleefully replied
"Welcome to the team, Bryan."
That was the first time he'd called me Bryan.
I picked out the number 7 uniform, and was on my way.

I went and sat next to Jack to give him the good news.
"Congrats man, we're going to wreck this year!" he said
Lawrence walked over, "Hey man, sorry I took your position. You make it?"
"Yeah! But I'll be playing second."
"Well, here's to a good year then!" Lawrence gave me a high five, and left the locker room.
Jack and I went to my mom's car, and got in.
"So, did you guys make it?" She asked
I realized at that moment it would be ridiculously awkward if one of us hadn't made it, especially me.
"We did!" Jack said
"Oh, good job boys!" She said
"Thanks mom." I added

We dropped off Jack at his house, and headed on home.
"What do you want for dinner? Since you made it, you get to choose tonight!"

What do I want?
A. Pizza
B. Pizza
C. Mac and Cheese
D. Go out to eat
