I called up the high school and they told me I could work any time between 5:00 and 11:00 P.M., as long as I locked up when I was done. I thanked them and hung up.

Hmm, I thought, No team practice today. What should I do?

I found the wall with the full-length mirror that I had requested and cleared out about ten feet of room. I pulled out my bat and got to work, tweaking my stance here and there. I had been practicing for about 30 minutes when the phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Justin! It's Mike! Me and a few others are trying to get a pick-up game going. You in?"

DECISION TIME!

A. "Sure, that sounds good."
B. "Let me know once you get more guys."
C. "Nah, I think I'm just gonna take it easy today."

"Sure," I replied, "that sounds good."

"Awesome. I'll see you at the practice field in about 30 minutes?"

"Yeah."

I packed up my baseball equipment and walked down to the nearest bus stop. After about a 20 minute ride, I got off to see Mike, Scott, and two others, one of whom being the huge first baseman, standing around. Mike was talking on a cell phone.

"Hey, Justin," Scott greeted me. "Mike's trying to get some others to come down, but it's not going so well."

Mike wasn't happy, "Come on, Zach, if you're going to make a career out of baseball it shouldn't be such a chore to play once in a while."

While Mike recruited more players, the other two players introduced themselves as Carlos Galvez, the massive first baseman, and Mark Kellum, the team's only left fielder. I noticed we didn't even have a pitcher with us.

Mike hung up, "Well it's not looking good. We might as well just head back home."

Mark spoke up, "Nah, we should at least do something with five guys. After all, we made the trip down here."

Mike shrugged. "I guess so," he agreed, "but what?"

After our whiffleball game, I spent the rest of the day relaxing.

The next day we had practice at 10 A.M. sharp, and I showed up rejuvenated and ready to go. We warmed up, as usual, and then split up for pitching and hitting practice. As Scott and I waited in line to get our cuts, he introduced himself to the player in front of us.

"Andy Barrett," he said when we asked his name. "I play first."

"So... you're the guy that has to compete with THAT," Scott pointed out. We turned to see Carlos annihilating pitch after pitch, sending a few over the fence and many more deep into the outfield.

"Yeah," he replied, "I'm not too optimistic about this upcoming season."

"Just keep your head up," I advised him. His lips pressed together in a unsure smile, and he turned back away from us. We watched him take his swings, and he looked pretty solid, but lacked the power that Carlos showed so effortlessly. Once he finished, I looked at Scott, who motioned for me to go ahead of him. I trotted up to the plate.

DECISION TIME!

As the coach reached back to throw, I squared to bunt. My bat turned towards the third base line, and angled slightly upwards, the ball came off it perfectly with a light *ping!* and rolled perfectly, right down the line, midway between home and third. For the next pitch, I decided to tap it in the opposite direction, towards first, and that one was flawless as well.

As coach prepared for his third pitch, I decided to pull off a drag bunt this time. Turning late, I made contact and the ball rolled nicely in the direction of third as I took an initial step towards first. I decided that was enough bunting, and spent the rest of BP slapping line drives to all fields.

The rest of practice, which included fielding and base running, went just as well, maybe even great, and I went home with a smile on my face.

After I reached home and showered, I thought about what to do.
