"Ah! Here we are Chief! Someday we'll be here, playing, and we'd have already been here for hours! I guess we better keep working!" Sheldon blabbed. Sometimes he doesn't shut up.
After we bought drinks and a hot dog, we found our seats. We weren't all right next to each other though. I saw Coach, Jerry, and one of Jerry's friends down in the 4th row. Me and Sheldon we're in the 15th row. Still really good seats. I didn't really see anybody else on the team. Anyway, after a while, a vendor came wandering down to us.
"Hey kids! You wan't to buy ticket? During the 7th inning stretch, we'll draw a name, and the winner gets to go down and try to throw a strike for $500."
"I'm in!" Screamed Sheldon.
"Sure, I will too." I said. There were only about 10 other tickets in there, so this guy must have a tough time selling. "How much are they?
"Only $25."The vendor said kinda quietly.
"Jeez, what a ripoff." Sheldon said. "I don't even have $25 on me!"
"I do." I said. "I guess I'll buy one. Not many people are in, so I have a good chance of winning."
"That's the spirit!" The vendor yelled. "Good luck!"

Soon, the 7th inning stretch came.
"The winner is..."

I'll watch the first inning in the luxury box to make sure that the fix is on.

"Ticket number 5!" the announcer said.
"Darn." I say.
"Tough luck." says Sheldon. "I guess you should have been smart like me, and not bought a ticket."
"You would've bought 20 if you had enough money." I reply.

Soon, I see Jerry walking down onto the field. I couldn't believe he won! Of course, he throws a perfect strike and wins the money. Guess I better go practice to make sure I can hit the strike zone...

Sorry, no time to write an update now.

"Alright boys! Next week is the first game!" coach says after practice. Everybody cheers. "Now, we need to figure who our starters are going to be. For pitching, we need some of you guys who normally would start to be a reliever. Now, that doesn't mean you'll be there all season, we just can't have an entire squad of pitchers who want to be a starting pitcher. So, any volunteers?"

I decided to volunteer, since I am only a Freshman. I was surprised to see nobody else would give up their spot.
Coach said. "I guess we only have one volunteer. Who will DEFINITELY get to pitch next week. In fact, after Josh (Jones) he is next on the depth chart!"
I could tell coach was pretty worked up about this, so I didn't really display the happiness inside me. I was going to get to pitch already!

After practice that day, Josh came up to me.
"Hey, that was pretty cool of you to volunteer." he said.
"Yeah, I guess so. I just figured that since I'm only a Freshman, I should have to pay my dues." I replied modestly. "If you don't mind me asking, why did coach not punish you for not volunteering?"
"This is my 5th year on the team. I was injured last year, after coming off a near MVP season. I messed up my ankle pretty bad, and I had to redshirt and miss the whole season. I guess coach felt bad for me, and wanted to make sure I got to play this season." Josh told me.
"Aw, that would suck." I said.
"I like you." Josh said. "Want to practice together tonight? Learn some tips from a pro?"

"Hey, that looked pretty good!" Josh tells me. We were playing catch, throwing each other our best breaking balls. "How many breaking balls can you throw?"
This is where it gets awkward. "I can only throw a changeup." I say. "That's all my coach could teach me, and all I needed to succeed in high school." I explain.
"Wow! You must be good!" he says. "I'll give you a tip from a pro. How about I teach you a new breaking ball?" he asks.
"YES!" I yell. "I was just too embarrassed to ask someone to teach me some." I say. "But I am a quick learner."
"Alright. What do you want to learn?" he asks.

Let's go with a...Knuckleball.

"I always wanted to be able to throw a knuckle-ball." I tell Josh.
"Alright!" he says. "A knuckle-ball it is!"

Josh teaches me to throw the knuckle-ball, and I really get the hang of it. I also improved some of my other areas while playing catch with him, and improved my changeup a little.

The next day at practice, coach is really impressed. "Woah Ryan, where'd you learn to throw that thing?" he asks.
"I know a guy." is my only reply.
