Wild Card Playoffs: Houston Texans (9-7) @ Nevada Knights (10-6)

With the crowd roaring at Panpaka Field, the Knights charged out of the tunnel, ready to win a playoff game for the first time in history, while on the other end, the Houston Texans did the same. Houston won the coin toss, elected to receive, and Andre Jonhson knelt in the end zone to kick off the 2013 NFL playoffs.

On the first play of the game, behind the support of 60,000+ fans, the Knights quickly sacked Matt Schaub, putting the Texans on their heels from the start. Continuing to apply pressure, the Knights forced Schaub into a check down pass that went for just a single yard. On 3rd and 18, the Texans threw a deep ball to Andre Johnson, but it was overthrown and they were forced to point. Ellis Hobbs called for a fair catch at his own 47, and the Knights offense jogged onto the field.

Clinton Portis was handed the ball on the Knights' first play of the game, but the Texans' defensive line powered through the Knights' offensive line without much trouble and dropped him for a 4-yard loss. Colin Kaepernick completed an 8-yard pass to tight end Donald Lee to set up a 3rd and 6, but was sacked on 3rd down, back-to-back three-and-outs had started this game.

After being forced to punt on the Knights' 41 yard line, the Texans took advantage of a fumble by wide receiver Preston Parker, scoring on a 19-yard run the first play following it. The Knights' offense remained stagnant; they failed to get a first down for the entire first quarter, while the Texans began to make quick work of their tired defensive line. The first quarter ended 7-0, but the Texans sat on the Knights' 12. Something clearly needed to change if the Knights were to win this game.

The second quarter, much like the first, started with a sack of Matt Schaub. Eric Wright denied an attempt to hit Andre Johnson for a touchdown, and the Texans were forced into a field goal that brought the score to 10-0. On the ensuing drive, the Knights were quickly stopped on three plays once again. They came out in punt formation. Things were looking bleak, and the crowd had all but vanished from the stadium. The ball was snapped, and Houston players looked around with confusion. It wasn't until he had broken past them that they noticed: Fullback Mike Karney had received the ball on a direct snap. They eventually caught up to him, but not until he had picked up the first down and a total of 22 yards. The play looked to be the momentum shift he Knights had needed, but two consecutive sacks on second and third down put the Knights in a 4th and 22 spot that even they didn't have the guts to overcome.

With 0:37 left in the half, the Texans kicked a field goal to go up by 13. The Knights, looking for any sort of offensive spark, called for a deep pass play to wideout Preston Parker. The pass was slightly underthrown, so Jason Allen, despite being initially beat on the play, was able to catch up and knock the pass away. He and Parker went down, and the ball went into the air and right into the hands of DeAndre Brown, who had been trailing on the play. Brown quickly stepped around the fallen defender and, without another soul in sight, cruised into the end zone. The score was now 13-7, and the crowd roared with excitement, knowing their team would get a chance to take the lead after the half.

Any momentum the Knights seemed to have garnered was quickly vanished when, on the second play of the second half, Colin Kaepernick was picked off for the second time in the game. It was returned for a touchdown, and the Texans converted for 2 points to make it a 14-point deficit. Kaepernick was intercepted again on the ensuing drive, and the Texans kicked another field goal to go up by 17. The Knights failed to pick up a first down on the next drive. Frustrated, they went for it on 4th down and failed, giving the ball to the Texans at the 30-yard line. The game was looking increasingly hopeless with every play, every decision, until Arian Foster fumbled. Hunter Hillenmeyer, in for the injured Daric Barton, recovered it, and a series of successful pass plays led to a 19-yard touchdown pass to Donald Lee. On the first play of the Texans' following drive, Matt Schaub was picked off by cornerback Jeron Johnson. From the 29, Clinton Portis broke off a 24-yard run, his first big play of the game. On 3rd and goal, Clinton Portis received the ball agan and powered into the end zone for a touchdown. With 2:47 remaining the 3rd quarter, the Texans' lead had been trimmed to 3.

After a lengthy Texans drive ended in a missed field goal, Clinton Portis picked up right where had had left off, capping off a series of runs with a 35-yard touchdown. After the game had seemed so hopeless just one quarter ago, the Knights were suddenly up 28 to 24 with no intention of looking back. They forced a punt and continued to hand the ball off to Portis, who scored his third touchdown of the game on a 51-yarder, giving the Knights a 35-24 lead with just six minutes to play.

The Texans, against whom the tides had so suddenly shifted, rebounded to score a touchdown, but failed to convert for two. With the score at 35-30 and 2:15 left in the game, the Knights got behind the running backs and took advantage of the deflated Houston defense, first forcing the Texans to use their timeouts and then running out the clock

Final Score:
Houston Texans - 30
Nevada Knights - 35

Divisional Playoffs: Nevada Knights (11-6) @ Indianapolis Colts (12-4)

Coming off a miraculous win against the Houston Texans, the Nevada Knights headed to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to face off against the hometown Colts. The Colts won the coin toss and elected to receive, kneeling for a touchback. A pair of runs and a 26-yard pass to Pierre Garcon had the Colts in business to start the game, but Eric Barton picked off Peyton Manning at the Knights' 21-yard line to save them from given up early points.

To kick things off for the Knights, Colin Kaepernick handed the ball off to Montrel Hopkins, who picked up 11 yards, nearly matching his total he had in the Wild Card round. Kaepernick then completed a pair of quick passes for a total of 17 yards before losing three on a failed screen pass. Clinton Portis came onto the field and was stopped just a yard short of the first down after a pair of runs. On fourth and one from the Colts' 31, Josh Scobee nailed a field goal, giving the Knights the lead. Not a single first down was picked up for the remainder of the first quarter, one that ended with the measly score of 3 to 0.

To start the second quarter of play, Clinton Portis was given the ball on six consecutive plays, racking up a total of 21 yards. Montrel Hopkins was stuffed on second down, losing for on the play, and an incomplete third down pass attempt set up a tough 53-yard field goal attempt for Josh Scobee. Fortunately for the Knights, he came through, and the Knights had taken a 6-0 lead, and on just the third play of the ensuing drive, Peyton Manning was picked off for the second time of the game.

With the ball at the Knights' 44, Colin Kaepernick completed three straight passes to T.J. Houshmandzadeh for a total of 27 yards. Another pass to DeAndre Brown moved the Knights into the red zone, but Clinton Portis failed to gain anything on back-to-back carries, so a 6-yard third down pass to Donald Lee was not enough to pick up the first down. Josh Scobee kicked his third field goal of the game, however, giving the Knights a solid 9-0 lead.

Something clicked for the Colts' offense on the next drive, as they went 80 yards on ten plays, capped off by a 2-yard rushing touchdown from halfback Joseph Addai. With the seconds winding down in the half, the Knights elected to play it conservatively, handing the ball off the Clinton Portis and Montrel Hopkins three times. With 0:05 left in the half, the Knights spiked the ball to set up a 56-yard field goal try. Josh Scobee's kick was accurate, but ultimately fell just short, bouncing off the crossbar to send us into halftime with a score of 9-7.

On the first play off half number two, Clinton Portis was given the ball. He cut to the outside but was hit hard. He dropped the ball, and it was quickly recovered by Drake Nevis for a touchdown. Peyton Manning was sacked on the 2-point conversion attempt, but the damage had been done: Colts 13, Knights 9.

Suddenly down, the Knights went through their next possession with just two huddles, completing six of eight passes and capping off the 82-yard drive with a 1-yard passing touchdown to Donte' Stallworth on a key fourth and goal situation. Josh Scobee converted the extra point to give the Knights a 16-13 lead.

The Colts retaliated quickly, completing four relatively deep passes and scoring a touchdown after just over two minutes to make the score 20-16 Colts, but Colin Kaepernick continued to pass with impeccable accuracy, completing five straight passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. With 4:37 left in the 3rd quarter, the score was 23-20.

After forcing the Colts to punt, the Knights' offense calmed down somewhat and returned to the run. Over the course of four minutes, Clinton Portis, Colin Kaepernick, and Montrel Hopkins hit the Colts for over fifty yards on the ground, and Montrel Hopkins finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown. Just 30 seconds in the fourth quarter, the Knights had taken a 30-20 lead.

On the first play of the Colts' next drive, Peyton Manning was intercepted for the third time, something that hadn't happened in a single game in the regular season. Starting from their opponent's 27, The Knights methodically ran several run plays, ultimately taking four minutes off the clock and kicking a field goal to go up by 13. The Colts scored on their next drive, but paid the price for it in time, as it it took them five minutes to do so. With 3:32 on the clock and a 33-27 lead, the Knights took over once again. Clinton Portis broke off a trio of runs that amounted 38 yards and ran the clock down to the two-minute warning. On third and six, Montrel Hopkins was given the ball. The Colts were down to a single timeout, and a first down would seal the deal. Fighting for every yard, Hopkins picked up the first by inches, forcing the Colts into using their last timeout. With the win in sight, Colin Kaepernick kneeled three times, running out the clock and closing the book on the Colts' 2013 playoff run.

Final Score:
Nevada Knights - 33
Indianapolis Colts - 27

AFC Championship Game: Nevada Knights (12-6) @ Cleveland Browns (12-5)

The Knights were flying high heading into today's game against the heavily-favored Cleveland Browns, who, led by running back Peyton Hillis, took the AFC's #2 seed with an 11-5 record. The Knights, on the other hand, still seemed to be somewhat of a fluke, as not a single player particularly stands out.

The Knights lost the coin toss, and the Browns elected to receive. Josh Scobee's kick, aided by the 14 mph winds at ___ field, went out of the end zone for a touchback. Onto the field marched the Browns offense, who quickly picked up a first down via a Peyton Hillis run. Fortunately for the Knights, the Browns elected to pass the ball on their next three plays, falling a yard short of a second first down and punting away to the Knights. Much like the Browns, the Knights picked up a single first down before being forced into a punt.

On the ensuing possession, Peyton Hillis continued to power through the weak Nevada run defense, picking up thirty yards before finally being stopped in the red zone. Phil Dawson came onto the field and kicked an easy 27-yard field goal that put the Browns on the board.

The Knights, starting from their own 20, were charging down the field until a screen play to Montrel Hopkins. The rookie running back picked up the first down but lost control of the football when hit linebacker D.J. Williams. Safety T.J. Ward picked it up, giving the Browns a shot to take a two-possession lead. Once again, Peyton Hillis made quick work of the Knights defense, needed just two plays to pick up 52 yards and a touchdown, giving Cleveland a 10-0 lead with 3:30 left in the first quarter.

The Knights, down by two possessions, handed the ball to Clinton Portis on back-to-back runs. This led to a 3rd & 3 situation, and Portis was given the ball once again. He pounded up the middle, breaking free and getting about ten yards before he was even touched. When he was hit, he broke the tackle and went all the way to the house for a 61-yard score. Josh Scobee converted the extra point, bringing the Knights within three. Unfortunately, Peyton Hillis continued to completely tear up the Knights run defense, gouging them for another 64 yards and leading to another Phil Dawson field goal that extended the Browns' lead to six. The Knights, however, struck with a field goal of their own at around the 8-minute mark in the second quarter.

The Browns continued their trend to pound it down the Knight's throats, as they ran eight run plays for 59 yards that brought them into the red zone for the fourth time in the game. Forced by an incomplete pass and a run stop into a 3rd & 13 situation, Colt McCoy attempted to forced a pass near the sideline down by the five yard line. Cornerback Eric Wright made an incredible leaping catch and avoided several tackles, bringing the ball to midfield for the Knights, who took advantage by marching down the field and scoring a touchdown, giving themselves a 17-13 lead going into the second half.

Both defenses played much improved games in the second half, as neither team was able to score in the third quarter. Notably, Peyton Hillis was held to just 26 yards on 9 carries. The scoring only picked up again when a pair of 15-yard penalties put the Knights at the Browns' 26-yard line. The Knights got their third touchdown of the day when Colin Kaepernick rolled out of the pocket and ran in a 3-yard score.

Colt McCoy, starting from his own 25 yard line, chose the right time to heat up. The third-year quarterback threw for 69 yards on just four plays, capping the drive off with a six yard touchdown pass to tight end Benjamin Watson. The two-point conversion was successful, bring the score to 24-21 Knights. After the Knights failed to convert more than a single first down running the ball, things were looking up for the Browns, who got the ball back with three minutes to play.

The Browns caught the Knights off guard, running the ball on back-to-back plays. getting the ball out to the 25-yard line at the time of the two-minute warning. Two straight Colt McCoy passes went untouched, but he connected with Mohamed Massaquoi on third down for 18 yards. Josh Cribbs was injured after picking up six yards on the next play, forcing the Browns into using their first timeout. After picking up a first down on the ground and firing to incomplete passes, Colt McCoy hit Massaquoi for the second time on the drive, getting the ball down to the Knights' 16 yard line. On the very next play, Brian Robiskie made a diving touchdown catch to give the Browns the lead. Just three plays into the Knights' desperate attempt to come back, Colin Kaepernick fired the ball right into the hands of Cleveland cornerback Dan Patterson with just 0:19 to play sealing the deal for the Knights and punching Cleveland's ticket to the Super Bowl.

Final score:
Nevada Knights - 24
Cleveland Browns - 28
