No one probably wants to hear me say this, but the Mets missed their chance at contending this year when they didn't trade for Halladay. The Mets could have easily upped the ante for the ace and gave Toronto better specs than the Phillies, but they didn't.

I'd take this offer every day of the week over what the Phillies paid:

Fernando Martinez
Brad Holt
Jonathan Niese
Ruban Tejada
Wilmer Flores

The Jays would have accepted it, too. I'm sure of it. That would give the Mets Santana and Halladay, easily the best one-two punch in baseball. I'd take it everyday over Sabathia and Vazquez.

@MaL: Ah, I thought we were comparing careers between the two catchers. I do see what you mean then, Bengie is just providing veteran leadership to the Mets. Still, I wouldn't want to overpay for that. Three million would be the most I'd be willing to give to Molina.

The Jays would accept it but the Mets wouldn't. We'd give up our top two prospect in Martinez and Flores and two of our top five pitching prospects in Niese and Holt. Then we give up another good prospect in Tejada. This would take a lot out of our farm system. I don't mind trading some prospects for a star, but I'd rather trade for a lesser player like Arroyo or Harang as MaL said this way it wouldn't cost as much. And if we had Santana and Halladay, we'd be spending $40 million on two pitchers. Who do you think we are, the Yankees? :P

Well no, duh. You guys may be in the same city as the Yankees, but your owner and GM share the same walnut-sized brain.
