There are 9 positions in baseball:

  • A Catcher (C) who catches throws from the Pitcher (P).
  • Three outfield (OF) positions: Left Field (LF), Center Field (CF), and Right Field (RF).
  • Four infield (IF) positions: First Base (1B), Second Base (2B), Third Base (3B), and Shortstop (SS).

The MLB players in Season Mode have as many as three listed positions. (34 have three positions in MLBPP 2007.)

Teams in the American League will also have a Designated Hitter (DH) who bats in place of the pitcher in the batting lineup. National League teams can designate one during interleague play in American League ballparks.

Season Mode

In Season Mode, the Pitcher can be put in any of the following roles which affect how the CPU will play him:

  • Starter - Takes mound from start of game.
  • Swing Man - Spot starter and reliever.
  • Long Reliever - Relieves starters who leave game early.
  • Middle Reliever - Appears when team is tied or trailing.
  • Situational Lefty - Called in to face lefties.
  • Mop-Up Man - Pitches in lopsided games to spell other pitchers.
  • Set-Up Man - Appears when team is barely ahead or tied.
  • Closer - Puts away the win. Usually only pitches the last inning.

Success Mode

In Success Mode, the position at which the Main Character starts the game will affect how he interacts with other characters.

In 2007:

  • A center fielder will have to compete with Marvin for the position.
  • A left fielder will have to compete with Milton for the position.
  • A second baseman will have to compete with Peter for the position.
  • A catcher can learn to catch Alvin's knuckleball.
