I looked out the window, and saw the bus pull up to my front lawn. I waved goodbye to my mom and pop from the window, and soon, I was off to College. Not just any college. The prestigious Ghetto University. Having grown up in the ghetto all my life, I was surprised to see a white guy hop on to the bus, and sit next to me. "You must be on the wrong bus," I told him. "No, this is the one for me," he replied. I stared him down. He was white, wore glasses, had blonde hair, and freckles covering his face. "We're going to Ghetto University, you know that, right?", I told him. "Ghetto University? Let me see that, he said, pointing to my scholarship letter. "Aha," he exclaimed, "You were reading this upside-down the whole time. This is a scholarship offer to Ottehg University, where this bus is going.". "Ottehg? Who the hell is that?" I asked him. "He's a German scientist and mathematician, one of the smartest human beings to walk the earth." the kid replied. "Then how did I get a scholarship? I'm not good at school," I replied. "This is for the new baseball team at the university," he answered. "They're just making a team this year, can you believe that? I'm trying out for the team too. Name's Marvin, by the way, Marvin Lesman." He shook my hand. "I'm Equanimeous. Equanimeous Jackson. Now let me get some sleep." "Ok, chief," He replied.

I nodded off, and was dreaming of batting in the College World Series. My team down by one, two outs in the ninth. Here comes the pitch - "Wake up, Equamineous!" Marvin screamed, interrupting my dreams. "What the f**** man?" I screamed back. "We're here," he said, pointing to the College Campus. We got out of the bus, and walked to the dorms. I got my room, and walked in, and started to place my stuff around. Soon, Marvin came in. "Aha, chief! We're roommates!" "Oh god no," I thought to myself, wondering how I would spent the next 4 years of my life with him everywhere I go. "And guess what, Chief? Baseball practices start today! And signups end in 5 minutes! We have to get there!"

I thought I would easily beat Marvin, but the kid has some wheels (if nothing else). We ran into some player named Alvin Lockhart on the way to the field, he told us where signups were. He seemed like a nice guy. He wanted to reach the majors too. At the signup station, we met some weird kid named Toby, who said he was the team captain, and talked like he had the skills. But soon, the REAL team captain, Robbie, came over, and showed us to some other freshmen. Peter White was a nerd, and Boris Milton was flat out strange. "Got any other weirdos on this squad?" I felt like saying, but I didn't want to say anything bad to Robbie. I asked him for some info on the team. I learned that they didn't have a coach, and that practice didn't start until February. "But it's August!" I piped up. "I know," Robbie replied, "Just in time for school!" "But I got a scholarship to play baseball!" I replied, and then quoted my idol Cardale Jones, replacing "football" with baseball.



I headed back to my dorm. What should I do?

I heard rumors about some wild party later on tonight, so I obviously wanted to go. I almost was out the door safe and sound until Marvin crept up behind me. "Chief, where are you going?" "Uh, nowhere" I replied. "Ok then. I'm gonna get back to studying!", he said. Crisis averted. I walked into the party cool and calm, looking for some hot girls. I found some and was about to make my way over, when some big kids got in front of me. "Are you a senior?" they asked? "No, I'm a freshman. This is my first day on campus," I replied. "Well then, you're in the wrong place. This is a party for seniors only!" They replied. More guys started coming over, looking angry. "Oh shit," I said, and I ran away. I looked over my shoulder. They were chasing after me! I ran around, juking and jiving all over the place, hitting some zig zags and all of that jazz, and as I reached the dorms, they were gone.

I slept until noon the next day. I finally woke up with my tummy grumbling. "Man, I'm hungry." I said. "Me too Chief. Let's go eat at the cafeteria." We both headed over. There was a long line, and only one worker to serve us all. By the time I got there, I was starving. "What would you boys like?" the woman asked. "I'll have the Willy Chili, ma'am." I responded. "Me too!" said Marvin. We got our food and sat down. I dug in. "You do know who Willy is, right Chief?" Marvin asked. "He's the chili guy," I responded dumbly. "No, chief, he's one of the best baseball players of all time!" "Sure," I responded. "Look him up if you don't believe me!" I pulled out my phone. "Says here he died pretty young." "No, chief, he's not dead! He was recently playing in a small town independent league!" "Sure, believe your rumors," I said.

Some girl walked by, and she dropped her lipstick. "Hey, you dropped something!" I yelled to her. But she kept walking and talking on her phone. I gave the lipstick to Marvin. "Here, go run it back to her. You're faster than me!" "Uhh, you see, girls make me nervous, so no." "Fine, I'll go do it," I said, running up to the girl. "You dropped this earlier," I said, handing the girl the lipstick. "You can thank me by letting me take you back to my place," I said, because I'm so cool around women. "Equamineous, is that you?" she replied. "Yep, it's the legend himself. So cold, so bold, so hard to hold. When they made me, they broke the mold." She slapped me. "You don't remember me?" I stared her down for a second. "Becky! What are you doing here?" "The bigger question is, what are you doing here, you numbskull?" "I'm here to play ball for the new baseball team," I said. "So, uh, wanna go out?" "With you?" She scoffed, and walked away.

The team nerd Peter White told me it was because of Hyper Recovery or some shit. I didn't care about what he had to say. When I went back to my dorm, I saw Marvin studying frantically. "What's up," I said. "Midterms are coming!" he screamed. "Who gives a rats ass about that," I responded, "we're here to play ball!". "Not at this school," he said. "If you don't keep your grades, up, you'll be kicked out of here!" "Oh shit," I said. We stayed up all night, cramming for the exams. We passed them. "Thanks, bro" I said to Marvin. "You're welcome, Chief. You better watch out for the Second week of May, though. Those final exams will be brutal." "Yeah, better remember those."
