"-well, at least it wasn't as bad as October of '98."
"Oh sweet Jesus, please don't bring that up." Stephen replied, I could practically hear him sweating, I chuckled to myself.
Stephen and I had been talking on the phone, a little bit of a tradition we had every July 4th. Some good brother bonding time, you know?
"Oh crap, I gotta go, Jackie."
"Oh, alright, happy Fourth of July."
"Happy Fourth of July!"
He hung up to attend to whatever it was that required his attention.

As I looked back to my computer, I couldn't stop laughing about Stephen's escapade in October of 1998.
You see, he a-

-knockknockknock-
"Oh, uh, come in."
A man in a grey blazer and black tie was standing at the door. he was no taller than 5'9" and sported well-groomed black hair. I had no idea who he was.
"Uh, hi." I said, very weirded out by this stranger who stood at my door.
"Hello."
.
.
.

"Er... Who are you?" I asked, dumbfounded
"Matsubara. Laisei Matsubara."
.
.
.

"...who?"
"Awww man, you didn't catch my James Bond reference?" His serious demeanor had all but vanished and he slumped over, shuffling to the chair in front of my desk.
"What, oh, no I caught it. Just who the hell are you?"
He looked surprised, "They didn't tell you? That's weird."
"Tell me? Tell me what?"
Oh God, I'm getting fired... Why, though? I've done well with the team! I shouldn't get fired!
"Uh... You can sit down, it's not that exciting, hahah."
It seemed I was standing up...
"Ahem, right, uh, okay. So, who are you?"
"I'm the new assistant GM, Laisei Matsubara."
Assistant GM...?
"Assistant GM? ..Why the hell didn't we have one of these before?!"

I got out of my chair and walked over to where Laisei was sitting, I extended my hand.
"You're going to be a huge help, Laisei. Welcome to the team, man."
Laisei stood up and grabbed my hand with both of his, "Thank you so much, Allen."
"Oh please, call me Jack."
"Will do, my man. Er, Jack."
I chuckled and Laisei responded with a smile.

"Excuse my asking, but Laisei's a pretty odd name, does it mean anything?"
"Huh- Oh, haha, no it doesn't mean anything, really. I'm like an eighth Chinese and my father wanted me to have a name that sounded Chinese, so they went with it."
"Oh, heheh, I see. Well, welcome aboard, kid."
"Kid? I'm the same age as you, man, 30."
T-thirty...? Holy crap, I'm going to be thirty this year. HOLY CRAP NEXT MONTH I'LL BE THIRTY
"Oh, haha, right. Of course. Thirty. Right."
"Well, see you later, Al- Jack."
"Right, uh, bye Laisei."

As he walked out, amidst my pondering on how the hell I could be turning thirty, I couldn't help but think that Laisei was a lot like me. I think that we'll get along well.

I hope, at least.

"Kanazawa, huh? Who's pitching?"

Knights Blown Out

Image - Yu and Kanazawa

Fukuoka Dome, Fukuoka – Oh boy, the Knights lost a tough one last night in Fukuoka. Falling 12-3 to the surging Hawks, the Knights now sit at a (still comfortable) 8 games out in front in the Pacific League.

Once again, former Knight Kanazawa proved to be a headache for the Knights’ pitching. In the bottom of the 2nd, Kanazawa drove in the first run. Himself. With a homerun to deep left. Matsuda then tripled, Tamura drove him in with a sac fly. 2-0. Hasegawa would hit an RBI single, 3-0. And then Li Ng, Chinese catching prodigy, hit a 3-run homerun. In the second inning it was already 6-0. Creek would go on to let up one more run, and would be pulled in the third, his shortest career start. “It was horrible.” He said.

Yu had a perfect game going until the 4th, when Kura took a 5 pitch walk. Kurihara would follow up with a 2-run homerun, the Knights first hit.

Tsui hit a grand slam in the 7th, to put the icing on the cake, and make it 12-3.

WHAT'S THIS
---

July 9, 2017

9:35

Since we've got an off day today, I figured I might as well hit the town. I haven't really had time to myself in a while.
I hit the usual checks: a breakfast for champions in some poorly toasted toast and orange juice, haphazard teeth brushing, and a plain green shirt with some khaki shorts. As a D-List celebrity now, I really have to make sure that I'm looking my best.
I walked out the door with no real plan for the rest of the day, except that I wouldn't come home until at least 7.

13:24

After stopping by the steakhouse Hafu, I went over to the mall. I needed some more ties.

14:47

God, this mall's huuuuge, I thought to myself, standing in the middle of a stream of people flowing both ways.
Someone walked over to me. One of those cell phone sales people.
Those bastards are even over here, huh? Damn.
Seeing as I was completely lost, and literally had nothing better to do, I decided to humor them.
The kid who walked over, no doubt in his teens, was staring at a book. He read it like a script, "Hello there, sir. I'm from NTT Docomo, would you be interested in changing your plan?"
"Oh, uh... Yeah, maybe."
"Oh, well in tha- Wait. Really?" he finally looked at me, "wait... You're Allen! Jack Allen! Holy... Dude, you're my little brother's hero!"
I was absolutely taken aback. Being told I was someone's hero was certainly not on today's itinerary.
"Are you serious?" I asked, flabbergasted.
"Yes! Ryu's always saying he wants to be just like you. He's been a huge Knights fan since their inception a couple years ago, man. Uh... Could I get an autograph from you for him?"
Fuken. Yes.
"Well, of course! What'd you say his name was? Ryu?"
"Yep. Ryu Azuma. Oh jeez, man. Could I get a picture? He'll be so jealous, hahaha!"
"How could I say no to that?"

Me and this kid who just walked up to me took a picture together.
This is absolutely surreal...

"Thank you so much!" He said as he bowed
"Don't mention it, kid. Say, what's your name?"
"I'm Kenma. Professional amateur photographer and part-time cell phone salesman. It's nice to meet you!"
I couldn't help but laugh, "Professional amateur, huh? Hahaha, I used to be something like that myself."
He smiled.
.
.
.
"OH!" I said, quickly breaking the silence. "You know what, how about I give you some tickets to the next Knights game?"
"...Are you kidding me?"
"Not at all."
He nodded, looking at me in disbelief.
"How many you need?"
"F--five? Yeah, I'm sure Miyuki will want to go to... Yeah, five!"
"Five tickets coming right up."

Luckily, I always carry around 20 tickets in my pocket. You know, for chance encounters such as these.

I handed him his five tickets, "right behind home plate, pretty sweet."
I smiled at him and was met with one twice as large. "Ryu's gonna love this. Thank you so much."

"Not a problem, kid."

We shook hands once again and I left the mall.

19:55

Shit. I didn't get any ties.

Knights Take A Tough Loss

Image – Shiokawa and Yano

Chiba Marine Stadium, Chiba City – Well, last night’s game was certainly nothing to write home about. Knights got beat bad, and by a team just barely over .500 to boot.

That’s it. That’s all I have to say.

Oh, Oda and Reiza collaborated to make a very nice play in the 4th. Oda was running out to catch a pop up. At the same time, Reiza was coming in from right. It was just out of Oda’s reach, so he jumped for it. But! It bounced off his glove, and Reiza slid under him to make the catch. Pretty cool.

Since the All-Star games are tomorrow, I figure I should go over the players' current stats.

([#] = last year at this point)

Pitchers:

Kenta Maeda #18
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
26, R/R, 155 km/h (96 mph), A, A, slider - 4, slow curve - 3, circle change - 2
ERA: 3.24 [?]
W-L: 12-3 [?]
IP: 141.2 [?]
K: 90 [?]
Ignoring his last two starts, Maeda has been without a doubt, the best starter we have this season. He cost us 5 players, so he'd better. He's leading the team in strikeouts and is second only to Creek in wins.

Anthony Creek #16
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
21, R/R, 155 km/h (96 mph), D, A, 2-seam, slider - 3, curveball - 2
ERA: 3.91
W-L: 13-4
IP: 124.1
K: 52
He's doing incredibly well considering he's a rookie. His ERA might be a little high, but he leads the team (and the NPB) in wins. A strong contender for Rookie of the Year.

Ataru Hiyama #11
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
22, R/R, 155 km/h (96 mph), B, A, 2-seam, slider - 1, slurve - 1, V-slider - 3
ERA: 4.09 [3.26]
W-L: 8-3 [8-3]
IP: 132 [124.1]
K: 73 [112]
He's always been super reliable, so I'm sure that he'll bring that ERA down. He's a horse, too. Strikeouts are way down, but other than that, he's still in line with how he usual is at the halfway point.

Kazuya Fujita #22
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
21, L/L, 153 km/h (95 mph), D, A, slider - 4, fork - 1
ERA: 4.60 [3.95]
W-L: 4-8 [10-4]
IP: 131 [132.2]
K: 62 [79]
He's been on a downward spiral since his outstanding rookie season. Unfortunately, he holds the worst record for all of the starters.

Sho Iwasaki #41
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
24, R/R, 153 km/h (95 mph), B, B, sinker - 4, drop curve - 3
ERA: 5.70 [?]
W-L: 6-6 [?]
IP: 101 [?]
K: 58 [?]
We traded Kanazawa for this guy. Oops.

Jian Shen #17
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
21, R/R, 152 km/h (94 mph), C, B, drop curve - 3, changeup - 4
ERA: 5.52 [4.24]
W-L: 5-4 [13-3]
IP: 76.2 [136]
K: 56 [107]
He's just been booted off the starting rotation, but has taken to the long reliever role well. Unfortunately, he was hit by a bad shoulder injury in June. His velocity just hasn't been what it used to be.

Kan Uchino #6
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
29, L/R, 151 km/h (94 mph), E, C, curveball - 1, sinker - 3
ERA: 6.94 [3.86]
W-L: 0-0 [1-1]
IP: 11.2 [14]
K: 4 [9]
He's just been called back up. He's not doing too great.

Yoshifumi Morifuku #12
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
25, L/L, 155 km/h (96 mph), C, E, forkball - 2, knuckle curve - 4
ERA: 3.75 [4.96]
W-L: 3-1 [2-2]
IP: 24 [16.1]
K: 9 [8]
He's competent. Doing much better than the past two years, at least.

Ryan Techer #13
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
33, R/R, 141 km/h (88 mph), D, D, 2-seam, slow-curve - 2, knuckleball - 1
ERA: 4.66 [4.50]
W-L: 1-1 [3-1]
IP: 19.1 [20]
K: 11 [12]
S: 0 [1]
Our pitching coach has taken on more of a mentoring role in the bullpen. More than usual, at least.

Naohiko Kikuchi #21
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
21, R/L, 156 km/h (97 mph), B, D, slow curve - 3, forkball - 3
ERA: 5.46 [0.48]
W-L: 1-0 [1-0]
IP: 28 [18.2]
K: 9 [10]
He's hit some hard stretches, but there's no excuse for his poor performance. He's also starting to show some emotion on the mound, something he never used to do. He was lights out last season, but he's really let me down this year.

Sakutarou Makida #19
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
22, L/L, 152 km/h (94 mph), E, E, knuckle curve - 1, V-slider - 4
ERA: 4.42 [3.66]
W-L: 3-0 [1-3]
IP: 18.1 [19.2]
K: 9 [15]
S: 7 [13]
He's no longer our closer, instead moving into the set up role. He just wasn't doing well, so I moved Morifuku into the closer role. He's coming around, though.

Yoshio Fujii
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
22, 143 km/h (89 mph), E, D, cutter - 3, drop curve - 2, hard sinker - 2
ERA: 2.77 [1.66]
W-L: 0-0 [2-0]
IP: 26 [21.2]
K: 15 [8]
S: 2 [3]
As per usual, he's been super solid. He's got 2 saves, too. His stuff is far from dominating, but he's one hell of a reliever.

Ryo Fujioka #23
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
21, R/R, 146 km/h (91 mph), D, E, cutter - 7, slow curve - 2, palmball - 1
ERA: 2.25
W-L: 5-0
IP: 20
K: 15
Ryo's a rookie. And he's absolutely killing it. A set-up guy of legends, and his cutter is unmatched.

Masahiko Morifuku #25
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
27, L/L, 152 km/h (94 mph), B, E, slider - 4, sinker - 3
ERA: 2.38 [?]
W-L (S): 1-2 [?]
IP: 22.2 [?]

He was the other party in the Kanazawa trade, and he, on the other hand, has been a huge part of the team's success. He's recently moved to closer to replace the struggling Makida.

Fielders now

Oh, I forgot to mention who's going to be in the All-Star games!

Kenta Maeda, SP
Masato Kurihara, starting 1B
Koyato Oda, starting SS
Yoshiro Ushida, starting 2B

Anyways, fielders now.

([#] = last year at this point)

Yoshiro Ushida - CF, #15
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
22, OF/2B, S/R, 3, A, D, A, C, C, C
AVG: .317 [.355]
HR: 10 [12]
RBI 50 [50]
He isn't having as great a season as he did in his sophomore year, but he's still proving himself to be one of the best leadoff guys in the business. He's also made the switch to center quite well.

Taiga Kura - SS, #1
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
21, N/A, L/R, 3, B, C, C, B, B, D
AVG: .257 [.348]
HR: 8 [15]
RBI 39 [73]
Currently in the middle of his worst career year, unfortunately. I might have to move him down in the lineup if he doesn't come out of his slump.

Koyato Oda - 2B, #3
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
21, SS, L/R, 3, A, C, B, C, D, D
AVG: .334 [.341]
HR: 9 [9]
RBI: 62 [63]
He has big boots to fill, taking over Kanazawa's role. Now, of course, no one can be as productive as he was (barring Kurihara), but Oda's doing mighty fine in the 3 spot. Maybe his great performance get pick up his middle infield mate, Kura...

Masato Kurihara - 1B, #34
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
21, C, R/R, 4, B, S, A, C, D, D
AVG: .349 [.324]
HR: 54 [46]
RBI: 121 [103]
As of right now, he's on his way to the best year of his career. Considering his accomplishments already, if he's to do even BETTER than that, it'll be quite the feat.

Xiao Zenigata - LF, #14
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
21, OF, L/L, 3, A, B, B, B, D, D
AVG: .287
HR: 8
RBI: 38
Our newest player, the all-star rookie we somehow grabbed as the last pick in the first round. He's doing pretty excellently, providing some solid coverage for Kurihara.

Daisuke Fukuchi - 3B, #5
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
21, N/A, S/R, 3, B, C, C, B, B, B
AVG: .323 [.301]
HR: 12 [18]
RBI: 53 [76]
Thank god he's finally hit his stride. He's an incredible presence in the lineup now, as opposed to when he first started out and struggled to hit above .240. Oh, how times have changed.

Goro Shigeno - DH, #56
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
37, OF, R/R, 3, C, C, C, B, C, C
AVG: .342 [.293]
HR: 8 [1]
RBI: 31 [15]
He was more of an afterthought, put in the DH spot out of necessity. But by golly, he's on a hot streak. Bringing up his .148 average in April, and proving to be the deciding factor in multiple games, this veteran has certainly found his way back into the starting lineup.

Akitaka Shimozono - C, #53
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
22, 1B/OF, L/F, 2, D, D, B, A, B, E
AVG: .277 [.291]
HR: 6 [5]
RBI: 41 [46]
He's not doing as well as he normally does, but that's perfectly fine. His normal was tremendously abnormal, as he was performing waaaay better than I thought he could or would. His defense is impeccable and his arm is something to be feared. Hopefully his haircut will change his luck.

Mitsuo Reiza - RF, #44
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
22, OF, L/L, 1, A, F, A, A, D, D
AVG: .347 [.296]
HR: 3 [2]
RBI: 28 [42]
He's gone down in the run production department, but his average is staggering. A whopping .347 from the 9 hitter? It's an incredible asset. He's like a second leadoff guy. Err, well, lastup guy.

Jun Sumiyoshi - C, #60
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
29, N/A, S/R, 3, D, C, E, C, D, E
AVG: .296
HR: 1
RBI: 1
He's certainly a nice addition to the bench. An above average switch hitting catcher is always nice to have too. His first hit in spring training was a homerun, pretty impressive.

Rikiya Terauchi - C, #52
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
21, N/A, R/R, 2, C, C, D, A, A, A
AVG: .286 [.286]
HR: 0 [0]
RBI: 2 [2]
To tell you the truth, I'm considering trading him off for some pitching help. I just downright feel bad for the guy. He's far too good to be a benchwarmer.

Takumi Nakahigashi - SS, #20
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
32, 2B/3B, L/R, 1, E, F, F, B, A, B
AVG: .200 [.000]
HR: 0 [0]
RBI: 0 [0]
Meh.

Hideo Nomoto - 3B, #4
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
32, 2B, R/R, 2, D, F, D, B, B, B
AVG: .323 [.000]
HR: 0 [0]
RBI: 1 [0]
He's taking a much more active role this season. He's also moved over to third base, since he's not able to move as nimbly as he was in his younger years. This 15 year veteran is still like the bench coach for the team. The captain.

Iruma Kusaguchi - LF, #65
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
25, N/A, R/R, 2, D, D, C, D, E, E
AVG: .455 [.000]
HR: 0 [0]
RBI: 4 [0]
He's decent.

Ryouya Miyaki - RF, #45
AGE, 2ND POSTION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
30, OF, R/R, 2, D, E, D, B, D C
AVG: .263 [.375]
HR: 0 [0]
RBI: 1 [2]
He's finally reached the age of 30... He's been on the bench his whole career. Poor guy.

"Well done, Kensou!" I slapped Kensou Mori, who managed the All-Star game since we were in the NPB Championship last year, before we stepped on the train to Sendai.
He smiled, "thanks, Jack. It felt good to have all of the greats under my tutelage. At least for a few days, haha."
"Heh, I would imagine."

We hopped on the train with the rest of the team. Kurihara, Ushida, Maeda, and Oda were all tired out from the games, but that didn't stop Kura from pestering them about it.
I smiled as I looked at them, before popping in the headphones and drifting off to sleep.

11:27

-bzzbzzbzzbzz-
Through my grogginess, I could still feel my phone vibrating in pocket.
I reached for it and looked at the ID...
.
.
"H-Hello?" I fumbled my phone a bit
"Been a while, huh?" a female voice met mine
"Sara?!"
I must've said that one pretty loud because it caught the attention of Kensou and a couple of the guys. Needless to say, I was very surprised.
I scrunched up, trying to quiet (and calm) myself.
"W-why're you calling me?"
"That's what you have to ask me, after all this time?" Her tone ambiguous.
"Oh... uh, well-"

She gave a heartfelt laugh, which was music to my ears. I haven't heard that laugh in an incredibly long time.
"Oh, Jackie... It really has been a long time hasn't it?"
"Heh, yeah. It's been, what, four months?"
"Something like that. So... Uh... How you been?"
"Pretty good. Yeah..."
.
.
.
This is rough, Jackie... We've got to salvage this somehow.
"So," I started, "how's work been?"
"Oh, you know, pretty good. Stressful. But... Good."
"Nice, nice."
.
.
.
Gah, this isn't going anywhere! What do I do...?
"...Come home, Jack."
...wha...WHAAAAAAAT
"...well... I mean-"
"I miss you."
Well, this isn't what I was expecting today to go like.
"I, uh... I miss you too, Sara."
.
.
.
I sat there in silence with my phone firmly placed on my ear for what seemed like forever.
"Give it some thought... I'll see you later, Jackie."
And then more silence.
Even though she had hung up, I kept the phone glued to my face.

Holy hell.
