Post subject:  Goodbye Expos

You know which team has suffered the most in the history of baseball? The Cubs. But do you know who's suffered nearly as much? The Montreal Expos, a franchise marred by futility and labor unrest.

Over their 36 year history, the made the playoffs the playoffs only once. Due to a players strike, the Expos snuck into the postseason despite have a worse year-long record than the Cardinals. And then in 1994, the Montreal Expos were cruising to the best record in the league and a shot at the World Series before another strike cancelled the end of the season. A few years later, they were purchased by Jeffrey Loria, a punishment worse than death. By 2005, the team had left town and moved to the DC area.

All that suffering is why Major League Baseball is proud to announce the expansion of the league, welcoming back the Montreal Expos (now owned by actor William Shatner) and introducing the Memphis Cougars. These two teams will be filled out by independent league players around the country. However, there will be a prospect draft help tomorrow evening to help bulk up the farm systems of these two franchises.

Image

Today is the prospect expansion draft, and the young GM's Colton Bartlett and Robert Tomlinson are ready to build their teams futures. Each of the other thirty organizations were allowed to protect three of their most valuable minor leaguers, leaving the rest to be fair game. Once a player is selected, no other prospects from that organization are eligible to be selected. And it looks like the Expos are on the clock.

Image

And we seemed to have finally wrapped up here. Let's take a look at who each team has selected.

Expos: Javier Baez (SS-CHC), Brandon Nimmo (OF-NYM), Henry Owens (SP-BOS), Reese McGuire (C-PIT), Daniel Robertson (3B-OAK), Zach Lee (SP-LAD), Matt Wisler (SP-SD), Carson Kelly (C-STL), Andrew Toles (OF-TB), Orlando Arcia (SS-MIL), Aaron Blair (SP-ARI), Ji-Man Choi (1B-SEA), Andrew Heaney (SP-MIA), Quintin Berry (OF-BAL), and Mitch Nay (3B-TOR)

Cougars: Jonathan Gray (SP-COL), Domingo Santana (OF-HOU), Edwin Escobar (SP-SF), John Ryan Murphy (C-NYY), Luke Jackson (SP-TEX), Carlos Sanchez (SS-CHW), Alex Meyer (SP-MIN), Jesus Aguilar (1B-CLE), Michael Taylor (OF-WSH), Robbie Ray (SP-DET), Tommy La Stella (2B-ATL), Ken Giles (CL-PHI), C.J. Cron (1B-LAA), Cheslor Cuthbert (3B-KC), and Kyle Waldrop (OF-CIN)

To accommodate these new franchise, which bring our total us to 32, we are switching the format to a unique, original, never-been-used-before formula. The league will have of eight divisions consisting of four teams each. The division winners plus two wild cards will move on into the playoffs. While the wildcard round was originally a one game playoff, it'll now be a three game series between the 3-6 seeds and the 4-5 seeds in each league. It's a revolutionary idea (and totally not a rip-off of the NFL). The divisions will be a followed

AL East: Red Sox, Yankees, Blue Jays, Orioles
AL North: White Sox, Twins, Tigers, Indians
AL South: Rangers, Rays, Royals, Cougars
AL West: Angels, Athletics, Mariners, Rockies
NL East: Phillies, Mets, Pirates, Expos
NL North: Cubs, Brewers, Cardinals, Reds
NL South: Astros, Marlins, Nationals, Braves
NL West: Diamondbacks, Padres, Dodgers, Giants

tl;dr Expos are back. Shit has changed

This should be a fun log. I'll be following this one, and Agent's one as well.

I agree with the above statement.

Today was opening day for the Expos, and surprisingly enough, they won! In a 12 inning marathon, they came out on top 8-6. They were carried by third baseman Jim Holbrook who went 2-3 with 3 RBI and middle reliever Odoardo Bregante who doubled and scored in the 12th, which ended up being the game-winning run. He also picked up the win while going 2 and a third scoreless innings. While this win puts them atop the NL East, it's likely that this will be the last time this season they'll hold that honor. This island full of misfits will be lucky to reach 65 wins.

3/31: MON 8, PIT 6
4/1: MON 3, PIT 2 (We won again? )
4/2: MON 3, PIT 0 (AND AGAIN? )
4/3: MON 3, PIT 6 (That's more like it)
4/4: NYM 11, MON 1
4/5: NYM 10, MON 0
4/6: NYM 14, MON 3 (Laughs and then sobs)
4/7: MON 2, MIL 1
4/8: MON 7, MIL 8 (I hate Ryan Braun)
4/9: MON 0, MIL 2

In slightly better news, the Expos made a couple splashes by picking up some free agents. They signed Kendrys Morales, Stephen Drew, Jason Bay, and Octavio Dotel. This should improve the team tremendously, potentially giving them a shot for 70 wins. *(censored)*.

No going for veterans, Skittles. You have to tank like the 76ers.

Sam Hinkie told me it would work, so I recommend it.

The bumbling Expos lost again Monday, this time going down 2-6 against the San Diego Padres as horrid pitching was once again the main storyline for Montreal. Juan Alvarez, who turns 39 on Wednesday, had a decent outing, giving up three runs over six innings. However, reliever Norberto Vargas gave up another three in less than an innings work, shooting his ERA up to a "how that *(censored)* is that even possible?" 24.30. The lone bright spot of the evening was Jason Bay's 3-3 performance with 2 doubles.

4/11: MON 2, SD 6
4/12: MON 2, SD 4
4/13: MON 3, SD 1
4/14: STL 0, MON 1 (Ron Walker hit a walk-off)
4/15: STL 10, MON 2
4/16: STL 1, MON 2
4/17: PIT 6, MON 4
4/18: PIT 7, MON 1 (Wow. Bay almost doesn't suck)
4/19: PIT 7, MON 3
4/20: PIT 8, MON 2 (Insert Marijuana reference)
4/21: PHI 3, MON 5
4/22: PHI 16, MON 2 (Utley hit for the cycle. That bitch)
4/23: PHI 6, MON 5

Well, we seem to have lost again. Starter Ismael Ramos gave up 8 runs, Cisco Trejo gave up another 4, blah blah blah. Our pitching is somehow worse than garbage. Only three guys have ERA's under 4. Holy shit. Donny Douglas, A.K.A. our best player is out for two weeks. Kendrys Morales has a -1 WAR already. And half my prospects are being abused in the minors. But at least Jason Bay is hitting over 300. So I've got that going for me, which is nice.

4/25: MON 2, SF 12
4/26: MON 1, SF 4
4/27: MON 2, SF 14
4/28: MON 3, HOU 1 (And now Bay is injured. *(censored)* my life)
4/29: MON 2, HOU 4
4/30: MON 1, HOU 4 (Berry kinda sucked in his debut)
