July Scouting Reports (Record: 45-38) Instead of the monthly analysis, this month, we'll be analyzing all of the Padres prospects in all of their organizations.
Padres Top 25 Prospects
#25 RP Zach Redmond 19 Years Old Class-A ETA: 2018 L/L, 6'5"'225
Redmond has the potential to be a high-quality reliever. Redmond is quite a big fellow so his velocity has great potential to improve as it currently only tops out at 88. Redmond's change up is a plus pitch, by far his best, as it has some solid tumbling action. His 79 MPH slider also has potential to increase as a breaker and could be a second plus pitch.
#24 CF Choo Roh 23 years old Class-A ETA: 2017 R/R, 5'11" 208
Roh has good potential to become a Mike Trout sequel player if he keeps developing the way he is. We have seen a very steady incline in arm strength and accuracy since the season begun and his contact and power are developing well also.
#23 RF Nelson Flores Double-A ETA: 2017 R/R, 5'10" 201
Flores' contact has steadily improved lately. He is currently only batting .240 in 50 at bats, but he will see more action as the season progresses. We could likely see Flores in AAA in 2015 or 2016 depending on his play time this and next year.
#22 SS Rich Gomez Double-A ETA: 2018 S/R, 6'0" 216
Gomez is a solid shortstop but his career with the Padres will be stunted by top prospect Willie Dickinson. Gomez is a very solid contact hitter, although he has not shown it this year, batting .221. He has been a very solid fielder in his career although. Gomez has shown very steady improvement though in batting as well as running.
#21 SP Henry Pritchard Class-A ETA: 2016 S/R, 6'0" 212
Pritchard's road to the MLB has been delayed lately by the Padres very deep pitching staff through their farm system. Pritchard is a solid pitcher that would likely be in the rotation for most other AAA teams. We'll likely see Pritchard and another pitching prospect traded by the Padres to acquire a veteran. Pritchard has a solid fastball, a mediocre slider, and if developed well, possibly one of the best sinkers in the game. Pritchard was 4-3 in 11 starts with a 3.06 ERA in AA.
#20 RP Frank Thurston Double-A ETA: 2017 S/R, 6'2" 198
Thurston is a big relieving prospect for the Padres, steadily being able to hit 90 on the radar. His fastball is also very lively, but all of his other breaking balls are mediocre. He will have to improve his craftiness as he continues to develop in the minors before the is called up.
#19 RF Fred Beatty (**) Double-A ETA: 2017 L/R, 6'4" 213
Beatty is not supposed to be much of a powe hitter, but he has the size to do it. Beatty has shown glimpses of power though, hitting 5 homers so far in AA this year. His tremendous speed is what's going to get him anywhere, as he's stolen 20 of the 22 bases he's attempted to thief. Beatty has also hit well, batting .261, one of the best averages on the Missions.
#18 SP Derek Cousins Double-A ETA: 2016 R/R, 5'10" 197
Cousins is another of the many pitching prospects that the Padres have focused on developing. Cousins is 6-4 in 16 starts with a solid 3.36 ERA. Cousins is definitely not going to be a Fireballer in the MLB, hitting 84 consistently at the moment. His curve and change up though are both great pitches and he is developing his cutter. His fastball may be slow but it has plenty of bite to it as well.
#17 SP Spencer Rivas Double-A ETA: 2017 L/L, 6'0" 182
One of the few lefty prospects on the Padres, Rivas' size and velocity won't impress anyone, while his savviness is what has showed the scouts. His fastball has natural, left-handed 'run' while his change up and curveball are still developing. Rivas is a guy who could become big if he works the right way.
#16 RF Eduardo Jimenez Class-A ETA: 2018 S/L, 5'10" 198
Jimenez is a very good contact hitter. When he is fully developed you can expect many .300+ batting average seasons and might also see some seasons where he racks up 20 homers as well. Jimenez could use some work on his defensive play though, as his bat is what has got him this far.
#15 SP Jose Diaz Double-A ETA: 2016 R/R, 6'5" 206
Jose Diaz's size and strength are both very intimidating to other batters. He constantly hits 93 on the gun and has exceptional life on his fastball. His slider has also been a very fearful strikeout pitch. If Diaz can recover from his shoulder separation quickly we will likely see him among the AAA starting rotation come 2015.
#14 2B Mark Allison Double-A ETA: 2018 R/R, 6'2" 177
Mark Allison is only 18, and earned an all-star spot on the AA team. Allison is batting .286 with 21 RBI in AA and only has up to go. Allison is a great fielder and quite a solid contact hitter, if he could improve his power and speed we could see him in AA mid-2015, but that's if all goes right.
#13 CL Juan Vasquez Double-A ETA: 2016 S/L, 6'3" 196
Another of the Pads lefty pitching prospects. Vasquez will likely be traded before the deadline or during the offseason unless the Padres get rid of Huston Street. Vasquez consistently throws 90+ and has a plus split finger fastball that has much accounted to his current 23 saves and 2.45 ERA.
#12 SP Joseph Mares Double-A ETA: 2016 R/L, 6'1"' 206
You can kinda sense the pattern that most of the Padres prospects are pitchers by now eh? Mares is a traditional lefty, hitting 87 on the gun while having some of the best technique and control in the league. Mares has had a weak season thus far, going 5-10 in 17 starts with a 3.91 ERA, obviously not getting much run support.
#11 CL Fred Kenny Triple-A ETA: 2015 S/R, 5'10" 174
Kenny will definitely have the stuff to compete as a closer next year, but Street is ahead of him. There have been rumors though that Mr. Cole would like to deal Street away to give Kenny a chance. Fred Kenny has saved 28 games so far, and posted a 3.06 ERA. Kenny has a great 1-2 punch from fastball to slider with his 10 MPH difference between the two.
#10 LF Tommy Medica Triple-A ETA: 2014 R/R, 6'3" 205
Tommy is definitely MLB ready right now but the problem is there is no where to use him in their stacked outfield. Medica has great multi-positional eligibility as well which will make him a great fit when the Padres are bitten by the injury plague.
#9 3B Rickey Mathis Class-A ETA: 2017 R/R, 5'10" 200
Mathis was acquired by the Padres in the Chase Headley swap a week ago. Cody Cole knows he will have fun building a dynasty with Mathis being the man at third base. Mathis has the potential to be a top hitter and quite a solid fielder as well. Mathis will be a .280+ hitter racking up at least 25 bombs a year.
#8 1B Reynaldo Villanueva Class-A ETA: 2017 R/R 6'0" R/R
Villanueva was the third round draft pick by the Padres, and most coaches say he is currently just about MLB ready. Villanueva has great contact and has shown glimpses of amazing raw power. In Villanueva, I see an Adrian Gonzalez like future.
#7 LF Patrick Alexander Class-A ETA: 2017 L/L, 6'4" 185
Alexander was the 2nd round draft pick by the Padres this year. Alexander is also supposed to be an amazing hitter for the Padres in the future. He also has an Ichiro-like arm and solid speed. Alexander is also just about MLB ready.
#6 RP Jayson McDougal Double-A ETA: 2016 L/L, 5'11" 170
McDougal is a Fireballer. He has amazing velocity for such a little guy. If he can develop his control and break on his breaking balls more, McDougal could eventually be a high-class relieving pitcher for the Padres.
#5 C Joey Accacia Double-A ETA: 2016 R/R, 6'2" 235
Accacia is a top prospect behind the dish for the Padres. Accacia has great potential to be a very good power hitter as well as a great defensive catcher. He has currently bashed 6 homers and is on a hot streak that could deserve a soon call up.
#4 3B Lonnie Bradshaw Triple-A ETA: 2015 R/R, 6'2" 210
Bradshaw has some amazing raw power as well as a great arm and defense. Bradshaw should be MLB ready by next year and could have the starting 3B job depending on the battle between Amarista and he.
#3 SP Casey Kelly Triple-A ETA: 2014
Kelly is currently MLB ready and could take a rotation spot whenever necessary. Most believe he will be in the rotation next year which is most likely true. Kelly is currently 8-1 in 17 starts with a 2.90 ERA. Kelly has a 91 MPH fastball which is complimented by his hard-breaking 2-seamer, and he adds in a filthy curveball as his strikeout pitch.
#2 SS Willie Dickinson Triple-A ETA: 2014 R/R, 5'8" 160
He is very small, but it hasn't stopped the top prospect from developing and prospering through the Minor Leagues. Dickinson is batting .277 with 10 homers and 39 ribbies. Dickinson obviously shows the potential to be a top hitting shortstop when he reaches the Major Leagues. Dickinson also has solid speed and works well with his glove which will definitely lead to an eventual callup this year.
#1 SP Ramon Fernandez Class-A ETA: 2018 R/R, 6'0" 218
Fernandez was the Padres first round pick and is a very solids starting pitcher. We will see him in AAA for sure, no matter what in the 2015'season and possible even the MLB come 2016. Fernandez has solid velocity constantly pounding 90 on the gun and throwing a nasty curveball to strike out guys.
