Playoff Drought Ends as Jays Clinch AL East Crown
by Gregor Chisholm, MLB.com

TORONTO - Lamont Cates and Matt McBride celebrate the win and the clinch.

The Blue Jays have done it! Playoff baseball will officially be coming back to Canada after 21 long years.

Just over 48,000 people showed up to Rogers Centre to watch the Blue Jays defeat the Orioles in the last game of the season by a score of 5-2, thus clinching the top spot in the AL East.

The Blue Jays did all of their damage in the 5th inning of today's game, as while the Orioles did score the first run of the game in that same inning via an RBI single by catcher Matt Wieters, the Jays pushed 4 runs past home plate. 3 of those runs came off the bat of Troy Tulowitzki, who hit a bases-loaded triple to left field to give the Jays a 3-1 lead. Jose Bautista later drove him in with a single, also to left field. All 4 runs in the inning came with 2 outs.

After the 5th, it was all Blue Jays. Dean Stradley turned in yet another quality performance on the hill, going 8 innings, allowing only 6 hits and 2 runs, and striking out a whopping 11 Orioles batters. Stradley finishes the season off with a victory, his 16th on the year. When asked about his clutch performance today, Stradley had this to say:

"I pretty much just treated this start like any other one. I went through my normal pre-game routine, I mixed my pitches like I normally do, I just maintained what has helped be be so successful so far this year. I think it was perfect timing that I was scheduled to start today, I feel that we needed an older pitcher to start such an important game like this. The other guys, y'know, they're young and talented, but they can sometimes get nervous during times such as this one. Hopefully I'm wrong about them though, we've got playoffs ahead of us and those very pitchers will hopefully show just how talented they are."

Lamont Cates picked up his 48th save on the year. The big righty, usually one to stay away from the media, decided to talk for a brief moment about how it feels to have closed out so many games.

"It's pretty cool, I guess."

Speaking of the number 48, Anthony Gose stole his 48th base on the year. That total is good enough for 2nd in the AL behind Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus, who has swiped 51 bags in 2015.

The playoff brackets will be made official tomorrow, since not every game has been completed yet today. The Blue Jays will presumably be facing whichever team wins the AL Central title.

Anyways, I would like to apologize for the short recap, but I wanted to get this done quickly in order to go and celebrate the Jays making the playoffs. I'm sure you all will understand. This is a special moment, you know?

See you all come playoff time!

Congrats on the playoff berth! Did the Orioles get in on a Sild Card, or was that truly a do or die game?

With the playoffs coming up, the Blue Jays look to continue their inspired run against the AL Central champion Detroit Tigers. The Tigers may not have had an excellent regular season record but are still loaded with superstar-type talent, led by Triple Crown-winning first baseman Miguel Cabrera.

The series should be a very interesting one. Let's see if the Jays can win it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
yeah
if there's something you want to know about then tell me, also if your player spent the full year in the minors, then I'm sorry to say that I can't get their full-season stats. all it will show me is playoff stats this late in the season. lastly, the September call-ups that are pitchers aren't listed since the game won't show their MLB innings pitched after being sent down (i can't call any players up either atm).
awards, like last year, will be posted after the world series.
Verlander's Shutout, Castellanos' Clutch Hit Give Tigers Game 1 Win
by Gregor Chisholm, MLB.com
Saturday, October 11, 2015
Image
TORONTO - Ian Kinsler trots home to score the go-ahead run on Nick Castellanos' single, with Andy Dirks following close behind.
The first Major League playoff game of many Blue Jays players' lives is a disappointing one, as they drop Game 1 of their ALDS series to the Tigers by a score of 2-0.
Starters Danny Hopkins and Justin Verlander both brought their A-games tonight in what has been their most important starts this year. Both hurlers battled each other pitch for pitch up until Hopkins was taken out of the game following the 6th inning. Hopkins had a superb game, going 6 scoreless innings, giving up only 4 hits and 1 walk, and striking out 6 Tigers batters.
"I really wanted to go at least another inning but I had thrown quite a lot of pitches already, at least 100 of 'em, if I'm not mistaken," Hopkins stated. "I let myself down in that regard, obviously everything else I did on the hill tonight was superb. I just wish I could have continued that for a tad longer. I'm sure everyone else was over the moon with how I did, but I don't know. I suppose the loss just tainted things for me. Oh well."
The Blue Jays' shoddy offensive performance tonight was primarily due to the fact that they were facing a Cy Young frontrunner in Verlander. It could also be for any number of other reasons, but inexperience was not one of them. Of the 4 players who got hits tonight, 3 of them (H. Goldson (who had 2 hits), J. Scott, Y. Bello) have spent 2 years or less in the Majors (Brett Lawrie had the other one). The Blue Jays will need better production from Tulowitzki and Bautista, both of whom drew goose eggs in the hits column, if they want to remain in the playoffs.
The game had appeared to be heading to extra innings, as Austin Langer and Hunter Strickland had thrown consecutive scoreless innings in relief of Hopkins, and Rickey Armas brought in closer Lamont Cates to help make sure the game stayed scoreless. Cates, however, was not up to the task. After walking leadoff batter Ian Kinsler and recording an out via sacrifice bunt, he was unable to handle a grounder by left fielder Andy Dirks, putting runners on the corners with only 1 out. After Dirks stole second, young third baseman Nick Castellanos would drive them both in with a single up the middle, bringing in the only 2 runs of the game. Naturally, Verlander was called on to pitch the 9th, and he finished the game off for a shutout.
"I think the key for me was getting guys to chase out of the zone," Verlander told the media postgame. "The Blue Jays, they have a lot of power hitters, but guys with those kind of skillsets tend to strike out a lot and chase pitches out of the zone. I just needed to make sure not to miss anywhere in the zone and I knew I would be good to go, and that plan really came to fruition tonight. This is a team that feasts on mistake pitches, so for our guys to be successful in this series, we need to work low in the zone. If we can do that then the series is essentially ours.
I know we didn't do that well in the regular season, but I think that may play a bit to our advantage. Nobody is really going to expect a team that went 82-80 to go that far, but it's not like we aren't a talented team or anything, I mean we do have the de facto MVP and a couple of Cy Young candidates in our roster, you know? We've never really had an underdog role in the playoffs before, but now that there's a bit less pressure on us, I think we could make some history this postseason. I was on the opposite end of one of those types of runs in '06, hopefully this year it'll be our turn. I'd sure love a rematch of that series, that's for sure."
Verlander finished the game going all 9 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just 1 walk, and striking out 9. The performance is nothing new to a pitcher who has made a name for himself as being one of the best pitchers to have in a playoff game after his performances in the 2012 and especially 2013 postseasons.
Tomorrow night, Dean Stradley will go up against Max Scherzer in Game 2 in the Rogers Centre. Will Stradley right the ship for the Jays, or will Scherzer propel his team ahead even further on the way to the next round? One thing's for sure -- it should be a great game!
Tigers Advance to ALCS
by Gregor Chisholm, MLB.com
DETROIT - Tigers players celebrate moving on to the next round of the playoffs.
The Blue Jays' magic season has unfortunately come to an end tonight in Detroit, as they lose tonight's game and the series by totals of 6-4 and 3-1, respectively.
Tonight's game was a surprise match between 2 lefties: Moses Adler going for the Jays, and Scott Kazmir starting for the Tigers. It was expected that the Jays would start Tyler Chatwood tonight instead of Adler, and that the Tigers would put ace Justin Verlander back on the hill to clinch it. The selection of Kazmir of all people was especially surprising due to the fact that he had primarily served in a long relief role in his first season with the Tigers. Overall, both teams probably would have liked to have seen better results from their starters tonight, but luckily for the Tigers, Kazmir's performance was much superior to Adler's. We'll get to their exact stats in a moment.
The Tigers struck first in the ballgame with a single in the 2nd by Miguel Cabrera off of Adler, scoring Game 1 hero Nick Castellanos. The Jays would take their first lead of the game in the 4th inning thanks to a 2-run opposite field blast by Jose Bautista, his first career postseason home run. The Tigers tied the game up in the following half-inning via a sac fly by catcher Ramon Cabrera (no relation to Miguel), but the Jays regained the lead in the 5th with a solo homer by first baseman Brandon Laird and an RBI double by center fielder Brandon Barnes.
After that inning is when the Tigers staged their comeback. Miguel Cabrera got the ball rolling -- or sent the ball flying, rather -- with a solo shot to the deepest part of Comerica Park in the bottom of the 5th. After a scoreless 6th by Kazmir (the last inning he would pitch tonight), the Tigers tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an RBI double by shortstop Jose Iglesias. Adler was taken out of the game after Iglesias' double and replaced by Dustin McGowan. McGowan retired the first batter he faced, center fielder Austin Jackson, but served up a 2-run blast to the following hitter, none other than Miguel Cabrera. The home run was Cabrera's 2nd on the night and series, and it gave the Tigers the 6-4 lead that would remain unchanged for the rest of the game.
The Tigers had a minor scare in the bottom of the 9th, as after Joe Nathan set down the first 2 batters of the inning, Ian Kinsler committed an error on a ground ball that should have ended the game, putting the tying run on first. Michael Scott followed that with a single to right field, meaning that the go-ahead run was at the plate with 2 outs. However, Nathan would get Brandon Hicks to ground out to Iglesias for the final out of the game, sending the Tigers to the ALCS for the 4th time in the last 5 seasons.
"Y'know, I've had a great year," Miguel Cabrera said joyously, "but doing well in the playoffs just makes it that much better. I'd love nothing more than to finish the season off with a World Series title and bring the wonderful Detroit fans the championship they've been waiting for. We definitely have what it takes to do it, and I think beating a talented team like the Blue Jays will help give us a boost as we head deeper into the playoffs."
"I can't sit here and tell you that I'm happy, because I'm not, and I shouldn't be," Bautista said, "but I have to say, just making it to the postseason after all those years, finally giving Toronto a glimpse of playoff baseball, that was a great experience. I know the rest of the guys feel the same way. So I think that they'll do a lot better the next time we get to this spot, because now we won't be as overwhelmed, we'll be much more motivated, and most of those guys will begin to reach their full potential by then. So, we'll be in a much better state of mind to make a great run at the championship than we were last year. I'm very optimistic for the future of this ballclub.
It's nice to see Miguel have yet another shot at a championship. We've appeared in a few All-Star games together and we've become pretty good friends. I'd like to see him win it this time around, he definitely deserves one, that's for sure. I'm sure he'd say the same thing if it was us going to the ALCS and not his team."
What is next for the Blue Jays? That remains to be seen. The team has plenty of pitching depth but could definitely use some help on the offensive side of things. Will GM Derek Dorian decide to stick with young and relatively inexperienced players and hope that they'll figure/re-figure it out? Will he try and resolve the team's issues from within the organization or by signing some free agents?
Only he knows.
Are you saying it's wrong to talk to a bag of Skittles? Because if so, I'm going to need to rethink a lot of things. :P
The intense race to get a draft player edited is now over. There was a huge battle for the final spots, but unfortunately, the deadline has passed.
Should I have? Is that what everyone normally does when they get to that point?
Either way, it would have been too much effort. Imagine if I actually won this series. Imagine if I got all the way to the WS. If I played all the games in the Division Series, then I would have had to play every game in the following series. You're looking at a possibility of me playing 19 games in a row, max. I don't want that. That would take forever. Especially since I probably won't have as much free time in the coming weeks as I currently do.
I suppose I could have played 1 more game, but I like the system I'm using.
