April 25, 2018 Oakland Athletics (6-8) at Texas Rangers (6-8) Matchup: RHP Frankie Montas (1-1, 4.91) vs. RHP Andrew Cashner (1-1, 5.65) Game Recap A three-run homer from Rougned Odor and strong outings from relievers Alex Claudio and Preston Claiborne helped the Rangers overcome significant fatigue and an ejection to take down the A’s 7-3 Wednesday afternoon. Odor’s three-run shot to right in the sixth inning turned the game around, giving Texas a 5-3 lead. The bullpen handled things from there, shutting down the Oakland offense. In the third, Hanser Alberto was ejected arguing balls and strikes. He was replaced at shortstop by Adrian Beltre, who made his first appearance at the position since 2004. Box Score Postgame Notes — RHP Preston Claiborne and INF/OF Alexi Amarista (retroactive to 4/23) were optioned to Round Rock. INF Max Muncy (.308 in AAA) was recalled from the same. Additionally, the contract of INF/OF Drew Robinson (.062 in AAA) was purchased from Round Rock. When asked about the moves, manager/GM Finn Fletcher said that with Claiborne and Amarista both fighting fatigue, he wanted to have another shortstop on the roster in case of emergency. — Fletcher noted that he was unsure who would start Saturday’s game. RHP Adrian Sampson, Round Rock’s scheduled starter that day, could be an option, though he is not currently on the 40-man roster (which is now full with the addition of Robinson). RHP Nick Martinez, currently working as a long reliever in Round Rock, is already on the 40-man and could be an option, or the Rangers could decide to use the “bullpen game” strategy employed previously. |

also !! thanks so much for all the survey responses so far. just a heads up, I'm like a month ahead, so you probably won't see many changes for a while -- though I have tried to switch up the style a little bit already. I'm glad that so many of y'all are following along and like what I'm doing! also there's still time to take the survey if you haven't already (2 posts up) |

April 26, 2018 Seattle Mariners (10-6) at Texas Rangers (7-8) Matchup: LHP Drew Smyly (0-2, 1.89) vs. LHP Yohander Mendez (1-1, 6.23) Game Recap Everyone in the starting lineup recorded a hit, Yohander Mendez tossed his first quality start of the season, and the Rangers downed Seattle 10-4 on Thursday night. With rain coming and going, the game was able to proceed as normal, but the rain may have led to an injury, with Rangers shortstop Hanser Alberto leaving the game in the fifth inning with a back injury after legging out a triple. Texas manager Finn Fletcher said that Alberto is day-to-day with a sore back. Fletcher also noted that he pulled three of his other starters — right fielder Nomar Mazara, third baseman Adrian Beltre, and catcher Jonathan Lucroy — in the later innings to avoid injury. Box Score Postgame Notes — 2B Rougned Odor has been signed to a six-year contract extension, with a team option for 2025. The total value of the contract is $59.3 million, with the option valued at $11.55 million. |

April 27, 2018 Seattle Mariners (10-7) at Texas Rangers (8-8) Matchup: RHP Felix Hernandez (2-0, 2.21) vs. LHP Cole Hamels (0-2, 11.84) Game Recap Solid performances from both starters were made useless by extra innings, and a fourteenth-inning rally gave Seattle an 8-3 victory. The Rangers wasted many chances to score, leaving a ridiculous 21 runners on base, an average of 1.5 per inning. Strong pitching kept them in the game until Jerry Blevins loaded the bases with one out in the top of the 14th, and Jose Leclerc surrendered all three runs as well as two of his own to put the game out of reach for the Rangers. Box Score Postgame Notes — A flurry of roster moves for the Rangers: INF Max Muncy and RHPs Keone Kela and Jose Leclerc were optioned to Round Rock. The contract of RHP Adrian Sampson was purchased from Round Rock. RHPs R.J. Alvarez and Nick Martinez were recalled from Round Rock. OF Jared Hoying was designated for assignment. — With both Sampson and Martinez active, Finn Fletcher said he has decided on a starter for tomorrow, but is keeping quiet on his choice until game-time. — INF Hanser Alberto (back) is still day-to-day, but is available in an emergency, according to Fletcher. |

April 28, 2018 Seattle Mariners (11-7) at Texas Rangers (8-9) Matchup: LHP Francisco Liriano (0-1, 6.14) vs. RHP Adrian Sampson (2018 debut; 0-1, 6.97 in AAA) Game Recap A dazzling debut from starter Adrian Sampson and a four-run seventh led Texas to a 5-2 win Saturday afternoon. Sampson, pitching against his hometown team, for whom he made his Major League debut in 2016, was terrific all night long, going seven innings and allowing just one run on six hits, with zero walks to boot. In the bottom of the seventh, Seattle’s fatigued bullpen was exposed, as the Rangers scored four runs against a total of six Mariners pitchers in the inning. The go-ahead run came on an RBI double by Delino DeShields, his only hit in 5 tries. |

April 29, 2018 Seattle Mariners (11-8) at Texas Rangers (9-9) Matchup: RHP Josh Tomlin (2-1, 1.64) vs. LHP Martin Perez (1-1, 7.47) Game Recap Solid pitching from Martin Perez and strong performances at the top of the lineup helped the Rangers overcome a three-error game to defeat Seattle, 5-3, and take the series win. Perez (2-1) went seven innings, allowing two runs (both unearned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts. The runs went unearned due to a trio of errors, committed by Joey Gallo in center, Delino DeShields in left, and Jonathan Lucroy at first. For his part, DeShields made up for it on offense, going 2 for 4 out of the leadoff spot with a solo homer in the third inning; Gallo made up for his throwing error with another throw, gunning down Nelson Cruz at third base. Nomar Mazara hit second and was 3 for 4, including a solo shot that followed DeShields’ in the third. In the ninth, R.J. Alvarez got into trouble, loading the bases, but Sam Dyson was able to come in and lock down his fourth save of the year. Box Score Postgame Notes — Following a day off Sunday, OF Jared Hoying was outrighted to Round Rock. — INF Hanser Alberto (back) has fully recovered from his injury and will return to the lineup next week. |

The only repeated lineup was the Opening Day lineup (Choo/Hosmer/Beltre/Gallo/Mazara/Odor/Lucroy/Andrus/DeShields), used for the first three games in a row. Players lined up in the following spots: Leadoff/1st: Stubbs 10, Choo 8, DeShields 1 2nd: Mazara 11, Hosmer 5, Stubbs 1, Lucroy 1, Choo 1 3rd: Hosmer 5, Beltre 5, Mazara 3, Odor 3, Lucroy 2 Cleanup/4th: Gallo 11, Beltre 7, Odor 1 5th: Odor 7, Mazara 5, Lucroy 5, Beltre 1, Gallo 1 6th: Odor 7, Lucroy 3, Choo 3, Hosmer 2, Beltre 2, Gallo 1, Pompey 1 7th: Lucroy 5, Hosmer 5, DeShields 2, Chirinos 2, Pompey 2, Gallo 2, Choo 1 8th: DeShields 5, Andrus 4, Chirinos 4, Choo 3, Pompey 2, Beltre 1 9th: Alberto 6, Amarista 4, DeShields 3, Robinson 3, Andrus 2, Morgan 1 Finn’s Commentary April was an up-and-down month for us, but we came out with a winning record. Our pitching definitely needs some help, I’ve seen some improvement over the last few games but a 6.82 ERA just isn’t going to cut it. Our offense on the other hand has been terrific, with Nomar Mazara carrying the load along with a bunch of other great players like Odor, Lucroy, Beltre, etc. I’d like to try to get a little more aggressive on the bases, that’s mostly my fault but I think just trying to prey on some of those weaker arms and take the extra bases when we can will go a long way. Defensively we’re considering some changes. Obviously Joey Gallo is a guy you have to keep in the lineup but we’re still a little unsure where he fits best. I love him at third base but we’ve still got Beltre holding it down there. He’s got a great arm for center field, but I don’t know if he’s got the experience or the range to be a lockdown guy out there. The plan coming in was to let him start in center and have Stubbs come in for him on defense, but Stubbs got hot with the bat and became our starter for a while there. I think we’re back to having him off the bench for now, plus we have Pompey now, but I still don’t know if he’s the right fit out there. Past that, there have been some questions about shortstop and left field. Right now, DeShields is swinging the bat well, and he’s been a plus defender in left, so I think we’ll stick with him for now. Robinson and Alberto, I think, are going to be in some sort of platoon at shortstop, though we may add Alexi Amarista to that mix in a few days once he gets back from that fatigue he’s been dealing with. I think we’ve got our best baseball ahead of us and once we get a few things straightened out, we should be rolling ahead into May. May 1, 2018 Texas Rangers (10-9) at Houston Astros (14-6) Matchup: RHP Andrew Cashner (1-1, 5.40) vs. LHP Dallas Keuchel (2-2, 4.26) Game Recap Joey Gallo had a season-high six RBI, Nomar Mazara added three hits and two home runs, and the Rangers took down first-place Houston 9-6. Gallo was 4 for 5 on the night, including a two-run single in the first, a two-run homer in the sixth, and a two-run single in the ninth inning, which came with two outs and the bases loaded, giving Texas two crucial insurance runs. Mazara hit two home runs, both solo shots, off of Houston lefty Dallas Keuchel (2-3), who only lasted four innings before being sent to the showers early. His counterpart, Texas righty Andrew Cashner (2-1), pitched six innings before manager Finn Fletcher turned the game over to the bullpen. Righty Matt Bush pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the year. Box Score Postgame Notes — None!! |
