Washington Nationals (27-18) at Texas Rangers (28-18)

Matchup:
RHP A.J. Cole (3-4, 6.39) vs. LHP Yohander Mendez (4-2, 4.47)

Linescore

WSH…0-0-2-0-0-0-2-0-0…4-13-0
TEX….1-1-1-0-0-1-5-2-x…11-14-0

W: Matt Bush (2-0) — 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
L: Greg Holland (5-2) — 0.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R (5 ER), 2 BB, 0 K

Game Recap

The Rangers rode a five-run seventh inning and a solid start from Yohander Mendez to split the series with Washington.

Mendez pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits/two walks and recording six strikeouts, but came away with a no-decision after Keone Kela blew the save in the top of the seventh. Matt Bush recorded the win after getting out of a bases-loaded jam, with the Rangers scoring the go-ahead run on a Dalton Pompey base hit.

Ben Miller, the DH for a second consecutive day, recorded his first major-league hit, and went 2 for 5 with a double and a run.

Also, we had our second pitchout steal of the year, with Elvis Andrus swiping second base despite a pitchout.

Also also, we swapped relievers again, sending down RHP Preston Claiborne and adding RHP Tanner Scheppers.

Finn’s Commentary

I’m impressed with our team’s progress from last month! We improved a lot on the pitching side, and our offense still ranks in the top three in our league in almost every category. We got a lot more aggressive on the bases and jumped from 8 steals to 37, while keeping a stellar success rate at 80.4%.

We’re still faced with some issues as far as lineups go. A lot of our guys have been on hot streaks, but a lot of it is about trying to get everyone in the lineup and trying to figure out that best combo still. We’re in a position now, with Ben Miller up, that if he hits well enough, he may force us into a strange position between him, Hosmer, Beltre, and Gallo. They can all play, but then you have DeShields, Stubbs, and Pompey all fighting for one spot in center field, and they’ve all been playing very well of late. I don’t know, man.

We’ve also considered shaking up the pitching staff a bit. Andrew Cashner may get bumped into the bullpen for a while, but we need Yu and Martin Perez to get back before that happens, this spot starter thing really isn’t working out too well.

19-9, though. Woo.

Man, that starting rotation has some ugly ERAs in there.

yep. still trying to figure that out, although our offense and bullpen have been really good and largely what allows us to still win games at this point

L: Tanaka (5-4) — 4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R (3 ER), 2 BB, 2 K
S: Sam Dyson (9) — 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Game Recap

Impressive pitching from Cole Hamels and home runs from Dalton Pompey and Delino DeShields led the Rangers to a 5-4 win Saturday night at Rogers Centre.

Hamels improved to 5-3 with a very strong outing, going the first three-plus innings without a hit before Rowdy Tellez’s one-out homer in the fourth inning. His ERA still stands at 6.65, but Hamels believes he has been improving of late. “I’m throwing the ball a lot better now than I was at the beginning of the year,” the 34-year-old southpaw said to reporters. Hamels’ splits show significant improvement, with a 9.95 April ERA compared to a 4.91 mark in the month of May.

Right-hander Sam Dyson pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save in ten chances, a day after taking the loss when he was brought in for the eighth inning of a tied ballgame. “I don’t think that’s it,” Dyson said when asked if he pitches better in save situations versus non-save situations. A careful look at Dyson’s numbers shows a 1.86 ERA in save situations, compared to 7.71 in non-save situations.

Postgame, the Rangers optioned infielder Max Muncy back to Round Rock. Left-hander Martin Perez was activated from the disabled list, and will start tomorrow’s rubber match with Toronto. Additionally, RHP R.J. Alvarez was outrighted to Round Rock (AAA), and RHP Brandon McCarthy was traded to Minnesota for minor-league RHP Aaron Slegers. Slegers, 25, has a 3-1 record and 3.60 ERA in 22 appearances at Chattanooga (AA) this season, and has been assigned to Frisco, where he will continue to work in relief.

Round 1 of All-Star Voting Results Released

Round one of MLB All-Star Game fan vote results were released. The fan vote determines the starters at each position for both the American League and National League squads, including starting and relief pitchers.

Leading vote-getters for each league were: Angels CF Mike Trout with 387,749 votes, and Cubs SP Jon Lester with 415,395 votes.

Rangers players on the ballot include:

Jonathan Lucroy, catcher (2nd with 254,548 votes)
Rougned Odor, second base (3rd with 225,629 votes)
Nomar Mazara, right field (1st with 366,524 votes)

S: Matt Bush (5) — 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K

Game Recap

In a thrilling pitchers’ duel, Martin Perez and the Texas Rangers came out on top, with a Dalton Pompey single driving in the game’s winning run.

Perez (4-2) pitched eight innings, allowing just one run on an Eduardo Escobar home run in the fifth. He dueled with Marcus Stroman, who went 6.1 innings allowing just one run on three hits with eight strikeouts, but Stroman left after just 71 pitches due to short rest. The right-hander was thrust into duty today with injuries befalling two of Toronto’s regular starters, and was sent to the mound on just two days of rest (after making his last two starts on three days’ rest). (For what it’s worth, the only other starting pitcher on Toronto’s 40-man roster is Sean Reid-Foley, who is currently on the Triple-A DL with shoulder bursitis).

After the game, DH/1B Ben Miller (.125/.176/.188) was optioned to Round Rock, and INF Max Muncy was recalled. Muncy is likely to be sent down after tomorrow’s game, though, to make room for Tuesday’s starter (likely one of RHPs Adrian Sampson, Nick Martinez, or Ariel Jurado).

L: Bauer (3-6) — 3 IP, 5 H, 4 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 3 K

Game Recap

A wild first inning (three hits, three errors, four runs) led to a wire-to-wire Rangers victory Monday night.

The inning saw all nine Texas starters bat against right-hander Trevor Bauer. Nomar Mazara led off by reaching on a dropped fly ball to right. After a Dalton Pompey single, Rougned Odor reached on another error (this one by second baseman Arismendy Alcantara), scoring Mazara. Joey Gallo hit a sac fly to score Pompey, and Jonathan Lucroy drove in Odor with a two-run shot into the bleachers. A third error allowed Delino DeShields to reach later in the inning, but Bauer managed a pair of strikeouts to escape the inning.

But the damage was done, with four Rangers hurlers — starter Yohander Mendez and relievers Keone Kela, Jerry Blevins, and Tanner Scheppers — combining for a shutout, the team’s third of the season (the others being a Cole Hamels complete game on 5/3, and a Martin Perez complete game on 5/22).

After the game, INF Max Muncy was sent back to Triple-A, and RHP Ariel Jurado (5-2, 2.95 in AAA) was called up to start tomorrow’s game.

Additionally, a trade was made with Detroit. INF/OF Alexi Amarista and minor-league RHP DeMarcus Evans were sent to Detroit, with INF Andrew Romine and minor-league OF Derek Hill coming back. Hill has been assigned to Down East (A+), and Romine will join the team in Cleveland and be activated on Wednesday.

Ariel Jurado pitched seven shutout innings and Rougned Odor had a three-hit game to lead the Rangers to victory Tuesday night.

Jurado, making his season debut, needed only 98 pitches to breeze through seven frames. He was perfect through three innings before Eduardo Nunez’s leadoff single in the fourth.

Odor doubled twice, hit a solo homer, and had two RBI and two runs in an impressive performance.

Postgame, RHP Tony Barnette was demoted to Triple-A, and INF Andrew Romine was added to the active roster.

2018 MLB Draft Coverage

Top 5 Picks

(1st) Oakland Athletics: OF Seth Beer, college, 21 — Beer is a legit offensive threat with impressive bat-to-ball skills and plate discipline. He possesses decent foot speed, but limited range in the outfield will confine him to a corner at best. He does have a terrific throwing arm, though.
(2nd) Chicago White Sox: RHP Brandon Birdsell, high school, 18 — Birdsell is a flamethrower with a good fastball sitting in the 96-98 range. His three other pitches — a curveball, slider, and changeup — are all below-average currently, but the two breaking balls show plus potential and the change could become a solid fourth offering.
(3rd) San Diego Padres: OF Jarred Kelenic, high school, 18 — Kelenic is a less polished Beer with slightly better defensive skills (still not enough to play center field with any regularity).
(4th) Philadelphia Phillies: 1B/OF Alejandro Toral, Miami (FL), 19 — Toral is a budding offensive star, and his versatility could allow him to find a utility role at worst. Toral slashed .302/.382/.520 in his freshman year at Miami against very tough competition, also racking up 9 home runs and 14 stolen bases.
(5th) Atlanta Braves: OF Danny Parnell, high school, 19 — Parnell showed impressive skill in his senior year at New Bern (NC), hitting a ridiculous .517/.562/.881 with 6 home runs and 24 steals. Parnell doesn’t have much power projectivity, but his ability to make hard contact and drive balls into the gaps, along with his defensive chops, speed, and patient approach at the plate, could turn him into a future star — or at least a decent fourth outfielder.

Rangers’ Top 5 Picks

(1/14) 2B/SS Tim Borden, high school, 18 — Borden is an impressive up-the-middle guy with the range to play an above-average shortstop (though he mainly played second in high school). Offensively, he is raw, but shows potential as a slap hitter.
(2/47) RHP Chandler Day, high school, 21 — Day shows promise as a future mid-rotation starter or back-end bullpen arm, with a plus curveball that could become double- or triple-plus and a fastball that sits in the low-90s. He needs a bit of polish, but could develop into a nice arm in time. (Note: he demanded a $23 million signing bonus, so that’s not happening)
(3/79) RHP Nate Riddle, high school, 18 — Riddle is a very raw, but highly regarded power arm. He was 9-2 with a 1.70 ERA in his senior year at Aliso Niguel (CA), showing a fastball in the low-90s and a curveball that flashed double-plus, as well as a developing changeup. At 6’5”, 205 lbs., Riddle could easily add a few more MPH to his heater, and profiles as a reliever.
(4/110) RHP Mason Englert, high school, 18 — Englert is a consistent starter who throws four solid pitches (fastball at 89-91, curveball, slider, changeup) with decent command and impressive stamina. He profiles as a back-end innings eater.
(5/140) RHP/1B Luken Baker, TCU, 21 — Baker is a legitimate two-way player, throwing 92-94 on the mound with a biting slider and hitting bombs at the plate. It’s unclear which way the Rangers are leaning as to his future, though a good example may be the case of 2017 draftee Jackson Lamb, who had a 4.22 ERA in 10 starts on the mound and a .296 batting average in 9 starts at designated hitter for the team’s AZL affiliate.

Other Notables

(10/290) OF/RHP Nick O’Day, high school, 18 — O’Day was listed in most scouting reports as a pitcher first, but the team believes he shows great promise with the bat, and should be able to make a smooth transition to the outfield. He will need to hit, though, as he doesn’t show much promise with the glove.
(14/410) RHP Josh Inouye, N/A, 21 — Inouye, a native of Honolulu, is notable for being a very gifted pitcher in a very small body. Listed at a generous 5’6”, 135 pounds, Inouye does not throw hard but induces grounders thanks to solid movement on his mid-80s fastball and two potential plus secondaries (a curveball and a changeup).
(22/650) C Ben Frausto, Alabama, 21 — Frausto possesses a very unique profile for a catcher: he has 70-grade speed and impressive contact skills but not much else. The lottery ticket out of the SEC hit just .263/.331/.338 in 47 games last year, but did manage 39 stolen bases, and shows decent power potential. It is unknown is he will stick at catcher or attempt a conversion to another position.

Signing Notes

Nearly every player signed before the end of the day Wednesday. The exceptions are:

Borden (offered $320,000 bonus)
Day (refused to sign)
Riddle (offered $150,000 bonus)
Englert (offered $2,600,000 bonus)
Baker (offered $150,000 bonus)
Vic Snuffer (9th round pick, offered $2,400,000 bonus)
Ryder Green (15th round pick, offered $3,500,000 bonus)

L: Clevinger (0-1) — 4 IP, 5 H, 5 R (4 ER), 3 BB, 4 K

Game Recap

Andrew Cashner tossed a quality start, the Rangers got home runs from Nomar Mazara and Rougned Odor, and Texas took home another road victory Wednesday night at Progressive Field.

Cashner (5-3) worked efficiently, using just 95 pitches to get through six innings. Keone Kela (1 IP, 1 hit, 3 strikeouts) and Tanner Scheppers (2 IP, 1 runner reached on error) breezed through Cleveland’s hitters to secure the win after Cashner departed with a six-run lead.

The biggest hit of the game came in the fourth inning, when center fielder Drew Stubbs, who has received inconsistent playing time of late, hit a rocket to right field with the bases loaded. “Not gonna lie, I thought that was a grand slam,” manager Finn Fletcher said after the game. “A bit disappointing when I saw it hit off the wall. But no doubt an incredible moment for Drew. I know it’s tough for him to come in not knowing if he’s going to play or if he does, if he’ll get an at-bat, so that was big for him to step up and deliver a clutch triple.”

Odor added a three-run homer in the sixth inning to extend the lead to its final score.

Postgame, INF/OF Drew Robinson (22 games, .244/.319/.390) was optioned to Round Rock, and 3B Adrian Beltre was activated from the 10-day DL.

we lost on a walk-off error what the damn *(censored)*

also Drew Stubbs probably cost us a win after getting caught stealing in the 8th inning and thrown out at home in the 10th, though both of those were results of my own decisions so who’s really to blame? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hamels was actually okay after the first two innings (7 innings, 8 hits, 5 runs, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts) but yikes those were rough

S: Jeurys Familia (10) — 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R (2 ER), 0 BB, 2 K

Game Recap

Matt Harvey left early with an injury, but the Rangers were unable to capitalize, falling 4-3 to the New York Mets on Friday night.

Harvey faced just four batters before exiting with what the team called “abdominal soreness”, but a strong performance from the Mets bullpen, namely Huston Street and Josh Edgin (2 scoreless innings), preserved the lead despite Jeurys Familia’s hiccups in the ninth — allowing a two-run homer to Joey Gallo, his 13th of the year.

Postgame, the Rangers optioned RHP Keone Kela to Round Rock and called up RHP Nick Martinez. Kela, 25, has split time between AAA and the majors this season, with a 3.68 ERA in 13 major-league appearances. Martinez, 27, has also spent time at both levels this year, with a 9.50 ERA in 4 games (2 starts) at the major-league level. He is likely to serve as long relief until Yu Darvish returns from the disabled list.

Also, RHP Chandler Day, the team’s 2nd-round pick, and RHP/INF Ryder Green, the team’s 15th-round selection, both refused to sign with the team, and will return to school next year. As compensation, the Rangers will receive one compensation pick in next year’s draft.

S: Sam Dyson (10) — 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 1 K

Game Recap

In a classic pitchers’ duel between two young hurlers, Rangers lefty Yohander Mendez outpitched Mets ace Noah Syndergaard to lead Texas to a narrow 2-1 victory over visiting New York on Saturday afternoon.

Right fielder Nomar Mazara led off the Rangers’ half of the game with a solo home run to right field off of Syndergaard (6-2), and Joey Gallo (getting the start in left field in place of Dalton Pompey) followed suit with a screaming liner down the right-field line to make it 2-0 in the second. Those home runs were basically the only blemishes on “Thor”’s record, save for a pair of singles later in the game which ended in no harm.

Mazara also showed out on defense, gunning down Mets cleanup hitter Yoenis Cespedes going first-to-third in the sixth inning. His leadoff home run was his third of the season (5/25 vs. TB, 6/7 at CLE) in just 16 games at the leadoff spot.

In the ninth, Sam Dyson entered and worked around a one-out homer by Mets first baseman Dominic Smith to earn his tenth save in eleven tries.

Team news:

The first All-Star balloting update has just been released! Several Rangers are in contention, including catcher Jonathan Lucroy (2nd behind Gary Sanchez), second baseman Rougned Odor (2nd behind Jose Altuve), right fielder Nomar Mazara (1st), and relief pitcher Alex Claudio (5th behind Davis, Britton, Hendriks, and Chapman). Please go out and vote for your favourite players to represent Texas in the 2018 All-Star Game, presented by FOX!

Game Recap

In what was thought to be a lost game, Ariel Jurado and the Rangers came from behind for a stunning 6-5 victory over Jacob deGrom and the Mets Sunday afternoon.

In the top of the second, the Mets got out to a sizable lead when Tomas Nido hit a two-run single, followed by another two-run single from Leury Garcia. From there, though, the young Jurado settled down, though he allowed one more run to score in the fourth inning. Jurado pitched a total of six innings with five runs allowed and seven strikeouts in his second major-league start of the season.

The score remained 5-1 for some time, until the seventh inning when a furious rally mounted against deGrom. Jonathan Lucroy led off with a first-pitch single, followed by a four-pitch walk to Joey Gallo. A single by Elvis Andrus scored Lucroy from second, and with two outs, Nomar Mazara singled to load the bases. A wild pitch scored the next run, and Dalton Pompey tied the game with a two-run single. Lefty Josh Edgin ended the inning, inducing a flyout from Adrian Beltre with runners on the corners.

In the eighth, Tanner Scheppers worked around two singles to keep the game tied, including a twelve-pitch battle with Yoenis Cespedes that resulted in seven consecutive foul balls and a called strikeout.

In the bottom half, Joey Gallo came up to bat against Edgin, and lined an 0-1 pitch hard to right field, sneaking it just over the wall for a 356-foot home run. Alex Claudio pitched a perfect ninth inning on just six pitches for the save.

After the game, manager Finn Fletcher plainly stated that the team is still evaluating its starting rotation. “I know we have to make a move with Yu [Darvish] coming off the DL soon, but whether that’s to option a guy, maybe move one to the bullpen… We have a lot of options, and we’re still trying to figure out the best one,” the 20-year-old said in his postgame presser. Darvish has been out of action since April 15 due to a rotator cuff injury, but will likely require a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining the team.
