The New York Mets went into the 2002 season with high expectations. Over the previous offseason, they had been rebuilt to go the distance. GM Steve Phillips acquired Roberto Alomar, Mo Vaughn and Jeromy Burnitz to reconstruct a team that went 82-80 in a bitterly disappointing 2001 season. Before the season began, manager Bobby Valentine said his vaunted lineup could break the club record in runs.

However, in 2002, less than two years removed from a World Series appearance, and less than a year after Mike Piazza's famous home run in the first game played in New York after 9/11, the Mets finished 75-86, good enough for dead last in the NL East. The season was memorable for off-field issues rather than on-field success. In July, pitcher Mark Corey suffered a seizure after smoking marijuana with teammate Tony Tarasco, and in September, reliever Grant Roberts was caught up in a related issue as photos of him smoking marijuana surfaced publicly. These issues helped factor into Valentine's firing after the season ended, with a year still remaining on his contract.

While many New Yorkers don't think the Mets have a chance at competing this season, the Mets' front office thinks otherwise. They hired Art Howe to replace Valentine as manager, while also inking power hitting LF Cliff Floyd and dominant SP Tom Glavine in free agency. The team hopes to get back to contention this season while looking to overcome the failures of the previous season.

The Mets won in comeback fashion on Opening Day, rallying from an early 3-0 deficit to beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Opening Day. Tom Glavine got the ball for the Mets to start the season, and struggled to start his Mets career. He was rattled in the first, allowing home runs to Alex Gonzalez and Moises Alou to put the Cubs up by three. However, Glavine settled in nicely, and held the Cubs scoreless the rest of the way through, pitching 7 innings of 3-run ball, striking out 8.

Kerry Wood started for the Cubs, and worked two scoreless innings before Ty Wigginton homered to get the Mets on the board. New York added a run later in the inning in the form of a two-out RBI single by Roberto Alomar cut Chicago's lead to 3-2. The Mets tied the game next inning as Glavine helped himself out with a run-scoring hit, and then New York took the lead for good when Roger Cedeno drove Wigginton home with an RBI double.

No teams scored - or even threatened to score - until the top of the 9th, when the Cubs loaded the bases with two outs against Armando Benitez. Facing Alex Gonzalez, who homered earlier, Benitez fell behind in the count 3-0. Armando worked the count full before he got Gonzalez to ground out to first, where Mo Vaughn fielded it and stepped on the bag to preserve a Mets' 4-3 Opening Day victory.

Cubs Notables: 2B Bobby Hill (4-5, 2B, R), SS Alex Gonzalez (2-5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R), LF Moises Alou (2-4, HR, RBI, R), SP Kerry Wood (8.0 IP, 7 SO, 10 H, 4 ER)
Mets Notables: 3B Ty Wigginton (2-3, HR, RBI, 2 R), CF Roger Cedeno (1-4, 2B, RBI, R), 2B Roberto Alomar (1-4, RBI) SP Tom Glavine (7.0 IP, 8 SO, 8 H, 3 ER, 1-2, RBI)
