"...S-Sara? What the hell are you doing here?"
"I've always been interested in Japan, I just needed an excuse to go. Seems like I found one, heheh."
"S-so you came all this way just to see me?"
"Of course not."
Ouch
"O-oh... Well then, why did you come?"
"The 109 in Shibuya, obviously. That's like, the best department store in the world!"
Oh
"Oh... Heheh. And here I thought you just missed me. I can't believe you traveled thousands of miles just for a department store, though."
"What can I say? A girl's gotta shop."
"Apparently so."
.
.
.
"So... uh," Sara started, "I sort of don't have a place to stay. So..."
"Oi, come right on in then. The couch hasn't been getting enough love recently. I'm sure it and I will have a nice night together."
She gave me a fleeting look.

"Oh... OHHH"

"So, you still wanna head over to Shibuya? It's quite a trek." I asked in between bites of toast.
"Eh... How about we go some other day. You've got a game tonight don't you?"
"Psh, I don't have to go to EVERY game. Just some of them."
"Well... I don't have any objections, then."

I headed upstairs after finishing my breakfast, putting on my most fashionable clothes that would still be comfortable for 90 degree humid heat.
Don't want to get laughed out of the 109, after all...

12:58

"Wow..." I looked at the huge skyscrapers and sheer density of people walking towards me, "I can't believe I've never been to Shibuya before..."
I was then bumped into by a man who was looking down at his phone. No apology. Not surprising.
"And now I know why."
"Wow Jackie... This is like New York squared."
"You're telling me. I've lived here for almost 7 years now and this is overwhelming even for me."
"Well," Sara sighed, "let's check out 109 regardless."
"Okay..."

Now you see, '109' is an absolutely monstrous department store in the Shibuya prefecture of Tokyo. It's pretty unbelievable what they have. It's aimed at women, though, so I probably won't be getting anything. Probably.

As I walked in, I was met with that "fancy clothing store" smell.
"Welcome to the 109!" a woman said from behind the counter, her fake enthusiasm in plain sight
"What'd she say?" Sara whispered
"She said 'welcome to the 109!' in a very unconvincing tone."
"Heh, I should've known."

Sara looked around for a little while, with another woman shadowing her and trying, fruitlessly, to help her. That language barrier's a bitch, huh?
I couldn't help but laugh at them, both just staring at each other.
"She should know the language." The woman said
"She's hopeless." I replied, very coolly
The woman laughed.
"I think we'll be heading out. Thank you very much."
"Thank you for your business."

"Why're we leaving Jackie?" Sara asked me as I was pushing her out the door
"Too expensive for my blood."

22:15

I walked back in the house, took my shoes off, and planted myself firmly on the couch.
"Goddamn. How did you convince that guy to bring the price down to 200 yen?" I asked, bewildered
"Heehee, I have my ways."
You must be pretty special if you can barter with someone who doesn't even speak the same language.

"Ah... These have been a good couple of days." I said while resting my feet on the table
"That they have."
"You know... Sara?"
"Yeah?"

"I've decided."

Oh man, I almost forgot! This is the game that I gave tickets to that kid to.

13:44

I got to my office a little early to clean up since I would be meeting him and his family today before the game.
Shoot... What were their names? ...Kenma! ...Ry... Ryu! uh... that's all I know.
I found an old college picture I had taken from home. It was actually of Stephen and his friends.
"Heh."
I took it solely to remind myself of the October of '96.
You see, Stephen an-

-knockknockknock-
"Oh, uh, come in."
"Hey, Jack," it was Laisei, "there's five people out front. They say they have a meeting with you or something? What do you want me to tell them?"
"Ooh! Must be Kenma."
"Oh yeah, one of them did say his name was Kenma... Uh.. what was it? Azuma? I think so."
"Let them on in."
"Alrighty."

Laisei left and a minute or so later came with five people in tow.
"It's a pleasure meeting with you all." Laisei said with a smile.
"Likewise." The (I would assume) father replied

There were five of them there, Kenma, who I had already met in the mall, a girl who looked to be in her 20s, a man in his 50s, a woman in her 50s, and a little kid, who I would assume to be Ryu. His eyes were shining as he looked around my office. His demeanor was infectious, and I soon found myself smiling at the mere sight of him.

I leaned down, "so you must be the Ryu that Kenma was talking about."
He turned in my direction, suddenly realizing that I was even there, "yo-you're Jack Allen!"
"In the flesh."
"You're my hero!"
D'awwwwwww
"Hehe, thanks kiddo. You pumped for tonight's game?"
"Yeah! Someday I'm gonna be a ballplayer, and then I'll manage, and then I'll GM, and then I'll become commissioner, and then..."
Kenma burst out laughing, "Ahahaha! Ryu, one step at a time, man."
I gave them a nice smile.

Laisei and I then led them on a tour of the stadium, locker rooms and all that good stuff.

"I'm gonna play for the Knights one day, Mr. Allen." Ryu said to me as we were in the locker room
"Heh, I sure hope so, kiddo."

17:45

"Alrighty, guys. Enjoy the game."
"Thank you, Mr. Allen." The mother said
I led them personally to their seats behind home plate.

welp, we better win tonight.

Fujita Throws Gem – Kurihara A Menace on Both Sides?

Image
Image – Fujita and Kurihara

Blue Stadium, Sakyō-ku, Kyoto – The Knights took the pitchers’ duel that ended up being one of the shortest games of the season, clocking in at an hour and fifty minutes. Kurihara was back in old form, coming off of his injury in full form, going 3-4 with 2 homeruns and 2 RBI. His second would end up accounting for the winning run.

“I heard that we had a ‘special guest’ today from Mr. Allen. So I made sure that I played up to standards. Can’t go disappointing a special guest.” He said to me after the game. Fukuchi also had a homerun, going back-to-back with Kurihara in the 7th, it was his 19th of the year.

The bigger story, though, was Fujita’s performance. Fujita, who came into the game with a 5.09 ERA went into the ninth with a shutout intact. But, with two outs, on a high cutter, Sora Kurihara, our Kurihara’s little brother, blasted a homerun to left-center to end it. “I know he was on a roll, but he gave me a nice pitch to hit. I couldn’t pass that one up. I’m sorry.” Sora said in an interview, surprisingly sounding completely truthful.

“Heh, Sora apologized? It’s no biggie. I’m just glad I was able to do something other than terrible.” Fujita commented.

“We won!”

22:07

I met Ryu and his family outside of my office
“That was awesome Mr. Allen!” Ryu high fived me
I like this kid.
“Hey now, I didn’t do a thing. You should be thanking Kurihara for hitting those big homers.”
Just as I said it, I took a super cool sidestep, and the six foot three inch monster, Masato Kurihara, stepped out of the door behind me.
“I hear you’re Ryu.” Kurihara said
His jaw dropped, I couldn’t help but smile
“Yo-you… You’re… You’re Kurihara!”
“That’s my name, don’t wear it out!”

Kurihara and Ryu talked for a little while before signing his Kurihara jersey.
“Th-thank you so much.”
“Don’t mention it, kid. Keep on practicin’. I better see you up here before I retire!”
“Count on it!” Ryu yelled as he ran to his parents’ car, which had been waiting, patiently, for him for the better part of 15 minutes.
.
.
.
“Jeez, Kuri, don’t talk about retiring. It scares me.”
“Sorry, boss.”

"GAHH"
I slammed my alarm's "snooze" button, "the alarm's always much louder the earlier it goes off."

I looked to my side and saw that Sara was not only already up, but already completely packed and ready to go.
She was sitting on the chair in my room, reading some book on Greek Mythology. "Who's Apollo?" she asked me
"Uh... The god of truth and the sun, or something like that."
"Oh yeah. That's right."
"Why're you reading that?"
"I dunno, seemed appropriate."
"In what way?"
"...Not a clue."
Riiiight... Okay then.

I have to get Sara to the airport in 2 hours since her week vacation in Japan has, unfortunately come to a close.

"All set to go, Jackie?" She asked as I lay in bed, covers over my face, with nothing but boxers on.
"Uh... No. Not yet."

I slowly got up and even slowlier got dressed.
God. I hate mornings.

6:50

"Flight JA4432, boarding at gate 2."
"Well, that's me."
"I guess this is goodbye, then." I said, fighting back the manly tears
"I guess it is." Sara said, not able to hold them back
That of course got me going as well.

There we were.
Two people crying in each other's embrace in the middle of an airport in Japan.
It really hit me then, "we sure live weird lives, huh?"
"Haha, I guess we do."

Sara and I left our hug.
"I guess this is goodbye for now." I said, tears still in my eyes
"I guess so... I'll see you soon, Jackie."
"See ya."

And as quick as she had gotten here she had left.

Bye Sara...

Bats On Full Display

Image – Masato Kurihara

Chiba Marine Stadum, Chiba City – The bats were on full display for both teams last night in Chiba City. Accounting for 31 hits and 16 runs combined, the Knights and the Marines had a shoot out. Well, sort of. The Knights, specifically Kurihara, just kind of bowled over the Marines in a 12-4 romp.

Kurihara went 4-4 with a single, a walk, THREE homruns and SIX RBI. “I’ll be honest and say I got lucky on the second homerun.” Was all he had to say afterwards.
