"Okay, Mr. Allen-" she started
Way too formal for my tastes.
"Oh, please, just call me Jack." I, cooly, said
"Alrighty then, Jack, I'll be back in a little bit. Is anything bothering you?"
"Uh, well, I suppose."
"Oh, what is it?"
'Why aren't you and I making passionate love?'
"What happened to me? Why am I here?"
"You mean you don't know?"
"Er... Should I?"
"Hah, well, I would think so."
"So, what happened?"
"You were in a car accident, Jack. A car lost its traction and slid down a hill. It was your textbook T-bone."
"Hunh."

And with that my memories started to come back.
I remember turning my head to see that SUV sliding down the hill. The woman driving was waving her arms, probably to warm me, unfortunately it was too late. She smashed into the front half of my humble rental. I was whipped to my right, and then whipped back and slammed my head on the steering wheel. Jeez, I'm lucky I didn't die.
Wait...

"Holy shit, that woman!"
"Oh. Right. There was a woman there." the nurse looked away
"She... She died, didn't she?"
"...Yeah. Yes, she did."
I had nothing else to say. Though the accident was neither of our faults, I couldn't help but feel partially responsible for the death of someone.
I put my head on my pillow and again was staring upwards. I was met with the same white ceiling as before.
"Well, Jack, if there's anything that you need, let me know okay? I'm just a button's press away." Again she flashed me her warm smile as she walked out of the room.
...
"Oh, wait, nurse!"
"Hmm?"
"What's your name?"
"You can call me Sara."
"Hunh, okay. See you in a little bit, Sara."
"Bye now, Jack."

Sara, huh?
I can dig it.

Just as I was about to enter dreamland, Sara walked in.
"Oh, Jack, I'm not waking you, am I?"
Yes.
"Of course not! Wasn't tired at all." I said as I was rubbing my heavy eyes
"Oh, good. We're going to try and get you to walk a little bit, sound good?"
"Uh... So soon? I've only been awake and conscious for about 3 hours."
"Heh, I know. We've got to get you up and moving though, Jackie."
Jackie. I could hear my heart singing.
"O-oh, I see. Okay."

Getting out of bed was a task much harder than it should've been.
My legs felt weak, and my head was splitting. But other than that, I was feeling mighty fine.
"Okay, Jack, all we're doing tonight is going to the door and back."
"Uh, okay, sounds like a plan."

11:28 PM

After my marathon from my bed to the door, I was back laying down, somewhat comfortable, somewhat sweaty.
"Thanks for being my guide, Sara."
"No problem, Jackie."

"How'd I do?"
"Heheh, well, I've seen worse, that's for sure."
"Hey! That's something, at least. At least I didn't fall."
"That would have been ugly."
"Oh yeah, sorry for the obscenities and the sweating."
"Don't worry about it. It made it all the better. More interesting, that's for sure."
She got up from the chair she was sitting in next to my bed.
"Well, I've got to head out. I should be back again, later, Jack. ...Well, no, I'll definitely be back, I'm on shift until 8."
"AM?"
"Yep."
"Damn, when did you start?"
"8."
"Jeesh, 12 hour shifts are really not my jam."
"Hah! Mine either. But the four day work week surely is attractive."
"Four days?! I might have to mosey on down to nursing school."
"Hahah, we would love to have you, Jackie."
I smiled and chuckled, she did the same.
"Okay. I'll be leaving you alone now. Try and get some sleep, alright? You had a busy day today."
"Yeah, I sure did."
"See ya, Jack."
"See ya."
She walked away.
"I think I love this woman."

She nodded

Spending the new year in a hospital room is surprisingly okay.
Hahah, just kidding, it sucked. At least my family was able to stop by to watch the ball drop with me.
Regardless, today is my last day in the hospital.

Sara walked in my room and checked my machines.
I have to say, she and I really have been having good chats over these two weeks. Despite the love comment.
"Hey Jackie, how you holding up?" she asked me kindly
"I'm feeling great. My headaches have really slowed down and I think I can walk without toppling over my dinner tray now."
She let out a good laugh.
"Aw, it's too bad I wasn't there to see that!"
Again with the laughing.
Pardoning it's malicious reasoning, her laugh was quite sweet. I couldn't help but throw in a playful "shut up" and a few chuckles of my own.
At this point she was sitting at the edge of my bed.
"Well, you know why I'm here, right?" she asked me
"Another adventure through the halls, I would wager."
"Hey! Good guess!" she slapped my leg "Well, I guess we should get you up, huh?"
"Alrighty." I huffed

It was still a workout to get up, but it was much easier than my first time with her.
I grabbed hold of my IV pole and off we went.

"Alright, you've made it past the tray threshold." she jabbed
"Hardy hardy har, I'm telling you. This is cake. Hell, I feel like I could jog at least a block."
"Wowww, that's pretty impressive Jackie."
"I am an athlete after all."

We walked by the nurses' station, I couldn't help but notice a few fleeting smirks as I walked past.

My trip was a short, round one of the 12th floor, where I was staying.

7:55 AM

I sat back down on my bed and heard it creak under my 190 pound athletic, manly frame.
Sara sat down in the chair that was near my bed.
"I'm gonna miss talking to you every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday Jackie."
"Uh, yeah, me too Sara."
"uhh... well, I guess I'll, um, be seeing you then."
"Uh hunh."

She got up from the chair and checked my machines and everything once again.
"When's your ride going to get here?" she asked me while fiddling with my IV bag.
"Huh? Oh, uh, I think my brother will be coming to pick me up around 10."
"Oh... Good."
The silence lingered as she took longer with my hospital things than she usually did.
I opened my mouth only to have an unintelligible "uh" come out.
"Hmm?"
Uh oh, she heard me.
"What, oh, uh, n-nothing."

I entered panic mode, and lost conscious control of my mouth
"Want to go out for a bite to eat tomorrow?" I said aloud

I slapped my hand against my mouth and looked over in her direction.
Her face was as red as it was on my first day here.
"O-okay."
"I mean, I understand, it's okay. I'm sorry that was so sudden."
"Okay, I'll go."
"Nono, it's fine, you don- what"
"I'll go."
"Uh, uhhh, alright. Okay. Coo'."

Well, that went better than I expected.

"Uh, I guess I'll see you tomorrow Jackie." she said as she was walking out the door.
"Guess so. See you, Sara."
"Bye now."

I could faintly hear another nurse say: "But, you're not working tomorrow, Sara."

10:00 AM

I heard my phone vibrate twice--a text.
"Jack, I'm here." from Stephen, as punctual as ever.

I got up with the help of Yolanda, the day nurse, and made my way down to the entrance.
Stephen was waiting there and helped me into the car.
"So, how'd it go?" he asked me
"Uh, pretty excellently."
"Really now?"
"Really."

As awkward as ever.

My eyes creaked opened at the incessant buzzing of my phone.
I reached out to my nightstand to grab my phone but ended up falling face-first out of bed.
"Holy shit, I could've just died."
I got up, brushed myself off and picked up the phone.
"Uh... Hello?" I said
I was surprised to hear the Japanese being fired off at me in response
"Jack. Where the hell are you?!"
"Uh. Who is this?"
"Who is this?! Kanegi, Matsuo Kanegi. Your boss."
whoops
"Oh, gosh, sir. Sorry I didn't recognize your voice, it's been a while since we've spoken."
"Yes. It has. Where have you been Jack?"
with Sara
"Er... I've been recovering from a car accident that happened on the 26th of December. Surely you were informed of that."
"Oh, uh, right," he was flustered "okay. Just make sure you make it back before the 26th of February, okay. That's when your great trade is scheduled to happen."
"My 'great trade'?"
"Oh, for Pete's- you forgot about it?"
My great trade, huh?
OH, that's right! For Kenta Meada. Oh, jeez. I'm going to have to tell the guys about that.
"Oh, right! No, sir, I remember. I'll be sure to be back."
"Alright, good. See you soon, Jack."
"Right. Bye sir."
"Bye now."

"Wait, hold on, what do you mean you have to go back to Japan?" Sara asked
"Er, well, I've got to go back to the Knights and everything."
"The Knights? What the hell are 'the Knights?'"
Perhaps I should have told her about this prior to today...
"Well, uh... Jeez, how do I put this... Uh, you see-"
"Just spit it out, Jack."
"I'm the general manager of a baseball team over in Japan."
She was certainly taken aback. From her point of view this must have certainly come out of very deep left field.
"Wh-what?"
"I'm the GM of a baseball team, the Kyoto Knights. It's really a long story how I got involved over there, actually. I was accused of murder, and then there was a trial, and then I was acquitted. And then I was introduced to the Hanshin Tigers, and now I'm with the Knights. We've been really successful actually. You know, I'm surprised you've never heard o-"
"Wait, so you live in Japan?"
"Oh, uh, yes. Most of the time."
"Why the hell didn't you tell me?"
"Uh... Slipped my mind?"
"Oh, please."
At this point she got up.
"Jack, I can't believe you wouldn't tell me this."
"Er, well, it's not like it's a big deal or anything! I mean, sure, I live in Japan. But that shouldn't get in the way of anything!"
"Get in the way o- What are you saying?! Of course it's in the way! What, were you planning on just leaving out of the blue and never telling me why?"
"N-no, of course not! I would never leave you."
"Well, that sure isn't true. Since you're going to be leaving now!"
"Listen, it'll all work out. I mean, you can come with me!"
"Oh, come on, now, Jack. I've only known you for 2 months. I don't think I'm willing to move across the globe."
"Hunh."

Sara opened the door and walked downstairs.
"W-wait!" I called to her
"Not listening Jackie."
Jackie, huh
She got to the front door.
"Sara, hold on!"
She hesitated, but still opened it
"Sara, I-I... You shouldn't leave with your pajamas on."
You *(censored)* idiot Jack. You *(censored)* idiot.
She gave me a stare as cold at the Arctic and slammed the door on the way out.

"I just made a huge mistake."
