They’ve always been a middle-of-the-pack kind of team, and this year is looking no different for them. Takemi Morishita AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES 19, L/L, 149 km/h (93 mph), D, C, curveball - 3, slider - 2 He’s their ace. A young hothead with a lot of room and time to grow into an all-star. He’s been on a tear, but I expect him to come back down to Earth soon. We’ll be facing him in game three. ERA: 1.69 W-L: 2-0 Masashide Ikeda - CF AGE, 2ND POSITION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES 21, OF, R/R, 2, A, G, A, D, B, B On the other side of the ball is their leadoff man. April 29, 2036 Archers’ Park, Asuka 22:09 After our 3-0 loss against the Mito Ronin (making our record 12-6-2 and theirs 12-7-1), we lost first place as soon as we grabbed it. I went back into my office after giving a pep talk to the team on “not losing hope!” though it may have been unwarranted. Morale has been incredibly high this season. I figured I should look over some of the tapes we had made for tomorrow’s starter: Yuuta Kogawa. Just as I was about to start the first one, there was a knock at my door. “Come in.” In walked Ken Saitoh, freshly showered and still in his towel. “Oh, uh…” I stumbled a bit, “whuh, what are… what do you need?” Saitoh just stared at me for a moment. “Your birthday’s next week, right?” I was confused, “Uh… May 7th, yeah. Why?” “Okay.” He turned around and walked out. I was very confused. Just as I was about to open my mouth, Kouhei Yoshimi walked in. “Azuma.” He said before shutting the door and taking a seat. “Oh, uh, hello Yoshimi. What’s up?” “Saitoh tells me your birthday’s coming up.” I still didn’t understand where they were going with this line of thought, “yeah, but what’s so important about that?” “Well,” he stood up, “Ishikawa’s twentieth is tomorrow, so... Saitoh and I were thinking…” “...thinking…?” I inserted my voice into the lingering silence “Thinking about going to karaoke this Friday to celebrate him finally becoming a man.” I sighed, “you mean have an excuse to go out and get sloshed.” He wasted no time with his response, “Yes. Yes, that is exactly what I mean.” “Uh…” The bottle and I aren’t the best of friends. Every time I get drunk, I seem to do something really foolish. It’s how I ended up with this tattoo on my side a- “So?” Yoshimi broke me out of my train of thought, I was rubbing my side. “Wha- oh. Uh, yeah…” I halfheartedly said, “If you don’t mind an old man like myself joining you, I’ll go.” “Excellent!” Yoshimi put his hand on the doorknob. He turned around, “Oh yeah, don’t tell Ishikawa about this, alright?” “Sure.” With that he left. Oh Jesus… And I need to be the responsible one with this crew... |

We’ve finally beaten the Ronin. And first place is ours once more. The Bears (2nd) and the Ronin are right on our tails though, so we can’t take it easy. But, after 23 straight days of games, we’re getting a well-deserved three day break. I’ve cancelled practice for tomorrow and Saturday to give the guys a rest. Plus… Karaoke tomorrow night, heehee -- May 2, 2036 Azuma Residence 21:42 -bzzbzzbzz- I walked over to my bed where my phone was laying, there was a text message. 石川 孝道 21:42 吾妻!私たちはここにいます "Seems they're here." Sure enough, Saitoh's car was waiting outside with, naturally, Ken Saitoh, Kouhei Yoshimi, and Takamichi Ishikawa waiting inside of it. I made sure to check my pockets and lock the door before jumping into the back seat. "Azuuumaaaaa!" Ishikawa yelled as I entered Saitoh turned around, "welcome aboard, Azuma." Yoshimi gave me a head nod. "Let's get this show on the road, boys." I, incredibly coolly, said. May 2, 2036 Rainbow Karaoke, Kyoto 22:07 "So it's just the four of you?" A young woman in some sort of future dress at the counter asked us. "Yes." Saitoh responded. It seemed he was our impromptu leader for the night. Playing second fiddle to someone seven years my junior on a drinking excursion was a bit odd. The young lady sighed, "right this way, please." She led us to our room, number 17, and unlocked it. "Well, enjoy yourselves, boys." She said blankly. "Thank you!" Ishikawa blurted out, in a compensatory fashion As I watched these three young men walk into the room with their designer clothes and hip early-20s swagger, I couldn't help but feel really lame. Here I was, a single 30 year old guy, standing outside of a soundproofed room to knock myself out with some cheap sake and beer to the tune of (most likely) terrible singing. I'm five days away from turning 31... What am I doing...? I really shouldn't be here... This isn't for me. I thought. I figured that I should leave them be, let them celebrate Ishikawa's "becoming a man" in style and without me cramping it. I turned around and began walked towards the exit. "Azuma! Where in the hell do you think you're going?" Ishikawa seemed to have followed me "I'm, uh... I'm gonna get out of here, Takamichi. This isn't my place to be." He face twisted, "what? Why not?" "Well... I mean, I'm a lot older than you guys. I don't want to impede." "Dude," he put his hand on my shoulder, "Saitoh and Yoshimi invited you. Besides, don't you think I want you here, too? It's a joint birthday celebration, coach! This is as much for you as it's for me!" "Heh," I smiled, "you always know how to cheer me up, kid." I turned back around and faced room 17, "let the night begin." |

The mish-mash of voices assaulted my newly awoken ears like someone who was in jail for assault and battery assaulted some other person. Wha... Oh god... What's happening. What happened? What time... What time is it? I was finally beginning to regain my lucidity. I sat up. When did I lay down...? I tapped the power button on my phone but could only make out the last "9" before my focus shifted entirely to the television screen in front of me. Everything moved very slowly. "Azuuumaaaaa! Welcome back to the living. You..." Ishikawa waved his hand in the air before settling it on the top of my head, "you catch any of my incredible rendition of 'The Angel's Cruel Thesis'???" The question sort of floated there before it registered he was speaking to me. "Wha... Oh shit, yeah, man. That was greeeat!" Ishikawa let out a dumbfounded bellowing laugh, “riiiight? Neaaron Genesis Evangeliiion is, like, one of the best anime made ever……” He shifted his focus to Yoshimi, “and Yoshi here agrees, RIGHT YOSHIIII?” Suddenly, he was shouting. Yoshimi gazed in our general direction, “yeeeee” rolled off his tongue. “Hey, Azuma?” Ishikawa tried to get my attention amidst Saitoh’s incredibly beautiful rendition of “I’ll Make A Man Out of You” from Disney’s Mulan He punched me in the shoulder. “I’m feelin… I dunno, I’m feeling a bit weird?? Do you understand?” I looked him dead in the eyes, “Yes. Things are weird right now.” Now that he had mentioned it, I did feel a bit strange. Significantly strange, even. With him pointing it out, my vision started to get hazy. “Shit… Not again...” -- May -, 2036 --, -- --:-- “-ll yeah, I play base--” “Ooh, you’re so musclely…” “Ugh, they’re KOKO…” My senses were returning to me, but my location seemed to have changed. I turned my head to the right and looked past the hostess sitting next to me. “Huh… We’re moving.” I was met with scenery zipping by. “Ohh, trees…” I said aloud “Wait… We’re in a car? Why are we in a car?” I began to get a bit nervous. “What’s wrong, handsome?” “Huh?” I looked back to my right and finally registered that there was a woman sitting, more or less, on my lap. “You were in the middle of telling me about your tattoo.” she said “Uh... “ I was very confused. “...Wait, I was?” I surveyed my surroundings a bit more wine cooler, loveseats, partition… This is a limo! I made a fist and put it in my other hand, “we’re in a limo!” Ishikawa laughed “haaaaa, yeah.” I looked around again, seemed all four of us were with a woman. Ishikawa was doing his best to impress a very bored looking woman that seemed to be about my age. Saitoh’s physique was being admired. Yoshimi’s dark red pants were being admired, he looked pretty disappointed about that. The woman next to me never averted her gaze. Every time I looked in her direction, there were her hazel eyes, looking right at my goofy face. “Uh…” I started, “Where we uh… where we going?” Ishikawa raised his arms high, “wherever the stars lead us, man. This night is still young and we’ve still got a lot of juice to burn. Well… a lot of juice and a lot of whatever this shit is. Yoshimi, what the hell did you buy?” “I dunno. The bottle caught my eye, so I bought it.” The pink bottle in Ishikawa’s hand was fairly pretty, I must admit. I’d never seen the label before, though. “Hmm… ‘Chui’... must be something new. I’ve never heard of it. Stupid name, too.” I said “So, back to your tattoo.” The woman next to me wrapped her arms around me. “Oh… Uh, right.” As I began to explain my tattoo in detail, my vis- -- May -, 2036 ------ --:-- “A-ZU-MA! A-ZU-MA!” “That should do it, you’re all set.” I stood up. Why does my shoulder hurt so much? I looked at my left shoulder and was surprised to see a set of eyes looking back at me. “An… Octopus?” “Gotta say, Azuma, it looks pretty dope.” Yoshimi complemented my new skin cover. No doubt it was because of how rowdy we were being. “Oh, um… Here you go.” I handed him my credit card. welp, I’ll deal with that later… But shit… I can’t believe this happened again… We walked out the door. “Damn, Azuma! That’s pretty hardcore. I don’t think I’d be able to get a tattoo.” Ishikawa looked worried Yoshimi spoke up before I could, “They’re really not that bad. Well, depends on where you get it. If it’s, like, on your dick or something it would hurt like hell.” “Haha, yeah, no shit.” Saitoh looked at his wrist. There was a watch on it, so I assume he looked at his watch. “Yeah… The sun’s due up in an hour, I think it’s time we head ho-” -- May 3, 2036 Azuma Residence 14:49 “Guhhhhh” I sat upright in my bed. “What a dream…” I walked into my bathroom and drank some water straight from the sink, “God, I’m really thirsty…” When I reached to shut off the faucet, I was met with a piercing pain in my shoulder, “Ow!” I looked at it. “What the? Why is it bandaged?! Oh no… Oh nononononoooo.” Memories of the night past slowly started to come back to me. I slowly unwrapped my shoulder and was met with a pair of familiar eyes staring back at me. “No… Not again...” I ran back into my room and grabbed my phone from the nightstand. May 3, 2036 Blue Stadium, Sakyō-ku, Kyoto 16:02 The normally bright white hallways of the Knights’ Left Field Main Office seemed a dim shade of grey on an otherwise beautiful spring day. I said hello to Tsuzumi, Laisei’s secretary as I walked by. “Hey Azuma, Laisei’s expecting you. You can head right up.” “Thanks. You do something different with your hair today?” “Oh!” She was surprised I noticed, “I did, actually. I’m trying this out. How’s it look?” “I really like it.” I tried my damndest to give a relaxed smile in this ultra-high-pressure situation. She giggled, “Thank you, Azuma. You’re always so sweet.” “Heh. Well, uh… I’m gonna, uh, head up now.” “See you, Ryu.” “Bye.” I opened the door to the stairwell. Three sets of stairs until I probably lose my job. I thought. Each step was harder than the last. My head was pounding, my shoulder was aching, my stomach was churning, and my hair was still wet from the shower. I was a mess. I came to Laisei’s office. GENERAL MANAGER Matsubara Laisei was emblazoned on his door. I took a deep breath. Well… Here goes nothing. I gave a solid three knocks. “Come in.” I heard from behind the door. The door creaked open as I pushed it. His office, as it had been the previous time I was in here, was pristine. All new equipment, various trophies from the Allen years, trophies of his own, and, of course, him. He was sitting in his chair staring at his computer screen. “Take a seat, Ryu.” I sat in one of the chairs opposite him. He turned his monitor to face me. “Oh god…” was all I could muster at what was on the screen. It was a picture of me. It was a picture of me in Gion, Kyoto’s red light district. It was a picture of me in Gion with no shirt on showing off my new shoulder octopus. “Oh god…” I repeated. “Yeah…” Laisei turned his monitor back, “what happened there, Azuma?” "Uh..." I couldn't offer him anything. There was really no explanation for what I was doing in the picture. I don't even remember doing that... Thankfully, it was only me in it. "I've got nothing." Was all I could say Laisei sighed. "Nothing?" I looked at the ground, "I'm sorry, sir. But... I can't give you any sort of justification for that." "We have a professional image to uphold, here. You know that, right?" He stood up and walked over to my side of the desk, "Ryu, you could get fired for this." "I... I know. I'm really sorry, sir. I can't..." I couldn't make eye contact with Laisei, I was far too ashamed. "You won't, though." He patted my back. "Listen, kid, you've got a lot of upside. You're still young. We all make mistakes. This was sent to me in private, so I'm the only one that's seen it. You don't have to worry about it going public, alright? We're going to keep this between you and me." I didn't understand. Laisei had every right to fire me on the spot, but instead he just smiled at me. "Haha, besides, that's a pretty sweet tattoo you've got there." I instinctively held my shoulder, "uh... Thanks, sir." He sat back down in his chair, "unfortunately, there still have to be some repercussions." He took a deep breath, "I'm going to have to suspend you for two weeks." Despite the shame in being suspended, I was actually very happy that it wasn't worse, "I understand." Laisei grinned, "I'm glad. I do have a question for you, though." "Yes?" "Was there anyone else with you?" The question hit me hard. It was surely a trap, and Laisei was probably asking it as a secret test of character. But then again... He may not be, and he may not know I wasn't alone. Laisei's a smart guy... He has to know, right? There's no doubt that he knows Ishikawa, Yoshimi, and Saitoh were with me if he got this picture from someone in his circle. What do I say, though? Saitoh's probably going to be called up next week and Yoshimi and Ishikawa aren't far behind... If I tell him and he didn't already know, they'll surely be punished.
