OPENING DAY 3-31-08

Sacramento Slayers 6 - Las Vegas Gamblers 1

SUMMARY: The Slayers were obviously ready to play, as they came out swinging early against Gamblers ace Terrence Garland. Jeff Francoeur started the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI triple to center field. Kurt Suzuki then singled him in to make it 2-0. Later, Jose Bautista doubled to center field in the top of the third to make it 3-0. He did the same in the top of the fifth to make it 4-0. In the same inning, Jeff Francoeur doubled to center field, scoring Mike Morse. The score was 5-0 now. Fast forwarding to the top of the 8th now, and Jeff Francoeur needed a home run to complete the cycle. He did just that, feasting on a mistake pitch by reliever Toby Thompson, making it 6-0. On any other day, Jair Jurrjens' performance would be the best of the night, as he completely dominated the Gamblers offense. The only run was scored due to a Joseph Dunn leadoff triple, and a subsequent single by third baseman Steve Chapman. Brandon League came in the top of the 9th to finish off the game. All in all, this was a great Opening Day for the Slayers.

Sacramento Slayers 4 - Las Vegas Gamblers 6

SUMMARY: The Slayers have received their first loss of the season. At first, the game started out fine for the Slayers, after a solo shot by Adam Lind in the top of the second. But in the bottom of the third, Slayers starter Anibal Sanchez ran into trouble. He allowed three straight singles to the top 3 hitters in the Gamblers lineup, the third single being an RBI by star catcher Dieter Van Hekken. Following the single, cleanup hitter Billy Shepard crushed a hanging slider into the left field stands to make it 4-1 Gamblers. The Gamblers tacked on 2 more runs the following inning on a double by second baseman Nicolas Ryan. The Slayers did not give up, however. Ben Zobrist hit a bloop single into left field in the top of the 6th, scoring Martin Prado. Then, in the top of the 8th, Prado crushed a mistake pitch from Kevin Cortez over the center field wall to make it 6-4. Unfortunately, the 4 runs was all they could muster, as the loss evens their record to 1-1.

Sacramento Slayers 4 - Las Vegas Gamblers 12

SUMMARY: The Slayers lose again, and this one wasn't even close. It was a 3-3 ballgame until the bottom of the fifth inning, when shortstop Travis Terry doubled into center field to make it 4-3, and then the next batter, second baseman Nicolas Ryan, tripled with runners on second and third to make it 6-3. The triple ended Shaun Marcum's day. The Gamblers were not done scoring for the day, though. Catcher Dieter Van Hekken hit a 2 run blast into right field in the bottom of the seventh, then right fielder Billy Shepard followed with a home run of his own. Van Hekken hit a 3-run shot off of reliever Brandon League to make it 12-3. Adam Lind contributed with a home run in the bottom of the 9th to make it 12-4, but it was just another run at that point. After a promising Opening Day, the Slayers drop the series to the Gamblers.

UPCOMING SERIES

Sacramento Slayers at Oklahoma City Ham Bones

The Slayers hope to bounce back from a disappointing series against their division rival, the Las Vegas Gamblers. This series will be their first series away from Panpaka Park. The Ham Bones have a potent offense, but they also have one of the weakest pitching staffs in the league. The key players for the Ham Bones are:

Ralph Marcus, LF, #50, L/L, 26 years old
3 TRJ, C CON, D PWR, B RUN SPD, D ARM STR, D FLD, B E RES
GM REPORT: The young left fielder is the leadoff hitter and catalyst to this team. If he hits, the rest of the team follows suit. He's already got 6 RBIs, the most for any leadoff man so far. Marcus's one weakness is that he is poor against lefties, and he just so happens to face one in Game 1 of the series in C.J. Wilson.

Christoper Leon, 3B, #7, L/R, 33 years old
4 TRJ, D CON, A PWR, E RUN SPD, B ARM STR, A FLD, B E RES
GM REPORT: The Colombian-born third baseman is starting to age a bit, but he can still crush a ball. He does strike out a lot, and like Marcus, is poor against lefties. However, he's a superb hitter in the clutch, and his fielding at third base is astounding.

Michael Collier, CL, #51, L/L, 32 years old
98 TOP SPD, C CTRL, E STAM, SLV 5, KNCB 4
GM REPORT: The closer is the best pitcher on a weak pitching staff. The Slayers will certainly have a challenge in close games with him waiting in the 'pen.

PROJECTED PITCHING MATCHUP:

Game 1: C.J. Wilson (0-0, 0.00) vs. Glenn Burks (94 TOP SPD, E CTRL, B STAM, SLD 2, CB 2; 0-0, 0.00)
Game 2: B. Morrow (0-0, 0.00) vs. Robby Ross (90 TOP SPD, F CTRL, B STAM, SLD 4, CB 2, CHG 2; 0-0, 0.00)
Game 3: J. Jurrjens (1-0, 1.13) vs. Matthew Bacon (96 TOP SPD, B CTRL, A STAM, 6 H-SNK, 2 SLD, 2 SPLT; 0-0, 4.50)

The Slayers and the Ham Bones are both good candidates to win their divisions. This will certainly have a playoff feel to it, despite it being so early in the season.

Are you gonna be playing every game, and posting every game? I really like this log too.

Yeah, this is a good log. I kind of like it that cooldude's goes fast, and this one is going to go slowly. Good balance. I guess mine is somewhat in the middle, as I think I'll start posting about 2-3 games per month.

We could certainly use another Success Log, since no one really started a new one after the Sluggers got deleted. At least, that's what I'd like.

Sacramento Slayers 12 - Oklahoma City Ham Bones 2

SUMMARY: The Slayers took full advantage of the Ham Bones' rocky pitching staff today. In the top of the second, Franklin Gutierrez led off the scoring with a solo shot to left field, his first of the year. After the next two batters singled, Ben Zobrist crushed a fastball right down the middle over the center field fence to make it 4-0. After Jose Bautista singled and reached second on an error, Adam Lind promptly singled him in to make it 5-0. The next batter, Michael Morse crushed a 2-run bomb over the left field fence to make it 7-0. C.J. Wilson was dominant on the mound, he only make 2 mistakes, allowing two home runs to Ham Bones right fielder Edward Butcher, but luckily those were both solo shots. Jose Bautista hit a 3-run home run in the top of the third to give the Slayers their first 10-run game of the season. He later homered in the top of the 6th to make it 11-0. In the top of the 9th, Kurt Suzuki was the only Slayers batter without a hit at the time. He changed that with a home run into right field to give the Slayers their 12th and final run. The morale of the Slayers should be a lot better after snapping the losing streak, and look for them to get a good winning streak going.

Sacramento Slayers 8 - Oklahoma City Ham Bones 6

SUMMARY: The Slayers win this one in a nailbiter. It started off fine at first, with back-to-back home runs by Martin Prado and Ben Zobrist in the top of the first. Morrow got into a little bit of trouble in the bottom of the second, when second baseman John Wooley led off the inning with a home run that barely cleared the left-field wall. Right fielder Edward Butcher doubled right after. Morrow got the last two batters out, and then pitcher Robby Ross singled into center field. Butcher ran hard to try and score but center fielder Franklin Gutierrez made a beautiful throw to get Butcher at the plate and protect the lead at 2-1. The home runs kept coming, as Jose Bautista led off the third inning with a solo bomb into left, then Jeff Francoeur hit a line drive solo shot into right field to lead off the top of the 4th. Kurt Suzuki followed that up with a solo home run of his own which made it 5-1. The Slayers had this in the bag, right? Wrong. In the bottom of the fifth, left fielder Ralph Marcus led off the inning with a single. Shortstop Martin Baez doubled into right field, scoring Marcus who was running on the play. Later in the inning, Christopher Leon hit a 2-run home run into center to make it 5-4. With 2 outs, Edward Butcher, who is on a roll this series, tied it up with a solo home run into left center. Morrow got the next batter, but not after 4 runs scored to tie the game up at 5. Fast-forwarding to the bottom of the 7th now, when first baseman Freddy Parra gives the Ham Bones the lead with a solo home run to left center off of reliever Jason Frasor. The Slayers did not give up, though. Jose Bautista tied the game up with a solo home run into left field off of reliever Gregory Hodges. After an Adam Lind double, Jeff Francoeur gave the Slayers the lead with a double to left center field. The ball skipped past center fielder Carl Lloyd, allowing Lind to score the go-ahead run. Franklin Gutierrez gave the Slayers a much-needed insurance run with a single off of Parra's glove, scoring Francoeur. Closer Brian Wilson got into a jam, with runners on the corners and nobody out. He struck out the first batter, then Kurt Suzuki caught pinch runner Theo Dawkins stealing second. With 2 outs, he got Freddy Parra to ground out to Zobrist to end the game for his first save of the season.

G. Hodges - 2.1 IP, 4 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 3 ER (L)
T. Crosby - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0 ER

The Slayers will go up against sinkerballer Matthew Bacon in a battle of aces. We'll see how the Slayers do against some actual decent starting pitching by the Ham Bones. If they win the next game, then they sweep the Ham Bones.
