I think Koji Uehara has a Forkball, not a splitter.

And Matt Maloney has a nasty CCHG

Koji is a tough one. PitchFX often confuses forks, splitters, chageups, shuutos, curveballs, and just about everything else offspeed with downward movement, and Koji reportedly throws 3 or 4 variations of that type of pitch. One NPB scouting report has Koji throwing a Forkball, a Shuuto and an occassional Cutter, but anyone who has watched Koji pitch knows he throws more than three pitches. Another scouting report has Koji thorwing a Forkball, two different Splitters (one is probably his Shuuto), a curveball and a change.

David Golebiewski over at Fangraphs has something a bit different:

Quote:
Uehara’s repertoire is expansive: in addition to an 87.2 MPH fastball (used 56.6% of the time), he unleashes an 82 MPH cutter (6.7%) and a 66.1 MPH curveball. Of course, his bread-and-butter offering is a dastardly 79.3 MPH splitter, a strikeout pitch thrown 32.5% of the time (our pitch data also shows him throwing a few changeups, but those are likely splitters as well).

That splitter offers great contrast to his rather modest heater. Uehara’s fastball actually has a significant amount of vertical movement for a pitch thrown at such velocity, with 12.2 inches of vertical break compared to a pitch thrown without spin. His splitter, in contrast, has 6.3 inches of vertical movement (Pitch F/X classifies it as a changeup, but most everyone refers to it as a splitter).

So . . . I made some changes to his arsenal. The Forkball is indisputable, as is the Shuuto and the Cutter. For the 66.1 MPH curveball, I like a low-level DCB - it accurately represents the 20 mph differential between it and his fastball. For the mystery Splitter that isn't a Forkball or Shuuto and is 19 mph slower than his fastball, a plain old Changeup fits best in both the speed and movement departments.

at the end of the year, you'll want madison bumgarner and tim alderson. alderson has a nasty "hard curveball" (Baseball America), and Bumgarner is a top 5 prospect IN THE BIGS.

By the way, Trevor Cahill has a knuckle-curve as his go-to pitch, i think. (again, baseball america)

daniel bard's top speed is 101, not 103.

I know - the MPH for many of these pitchers is a tick or two above their documented top speed and 3-5 mph over their average fastball speed. I adjust the MPH for ALL pitchers in the game for a few reasons:

- Motivation: It reduces top pitch speed to uncharacteristically slow levels. For example, Ramon Troncoso’s fastball averages 92.3 mph and he regularly sits in the 93-94 mph range. But if you were to give Troncoso a max mph of 94, the only way you would be able to throw a 94 mph heater would be to have his motivation at 9 or 10 and mash the ‘pitch’ button during his windup. In all other scenarios, Troncoso would probably be throwing 88-92 mph fastballs.

- Type of fastball: Staying with the example of Troncoso, it would be unwise to base his max mph on the classic 4-seamer because, in reality, he features a sinker with extreme action. In the world of Power Pros, his primary fastball is closer to a 2SFB or SIFB. So in order to get Troncoso’s velocity to match his pitch of choice, you have to add a tick or two so he can throw a fastball that sinks between 91-94 mph. The only downside is that he will still throw a 4-seamer, but that goes for every player in the game, so it’s a universal problem.

- CPU: As an opponent, the computer very rarely hits top speed. Teeing off on 80-88 mph fastballs from virtually every pitcher in the game is fun for awhile, but when I face Lincecum his fastball should sizzle, not fizzle.

So in the case of Bard, if you were to take him for a spin you might be able to throw the occassional 103 mph fastball, but only if he was fully motivated and pitching from the windup. In all other cases, he would be lighting up the radar guns between 97-101 mph.

Very good point. In that case, since Belisario rounds out at 98 mph, you should crank his top speed up to 100.
