I called Ben and asked if he wanted to come over and practice or something. He said he didn't know my address, so I told him, and he said he would come over and we could decide what to do then. About 10 minutes later he arrived. We decided to practice baseball. He worked on his offense while my brother, Jake, pitched to him and I worked on my defense. Afterwards he told me where he lived. Then he went home and Jake and I played catch. Then I went to sleep.

The next day was Tuesday. I went to practice and Coach said today was a free practice. What should I work on?

I worked on my power in the weight room. Afterwards, Coach told us tomorrow would be a fielding competition between the 3 of us. The night and next day passed quickly and it was practice again. Coaxh told us to go to the outfield, we would practice catching fly balls.

I tried to just catch the ball. I did, and then I paused. "Well? Throw the ball in, Stevens. Any day now." I threw it in and it was an awful throw, didn't even make it to second from center field. Nick was an outfielder, but he only passed (catch and good throw) on 4 out of the 10 balls. Ben, however, passed on 9, the one he failed on was a home run. I passed on 6.

Coach told us to all work on our running or something, so we ran sprints for the rest of practice.

The next day was Thursday, free practice. Ben, Nick and I worked on fielding while the pitchers threw each other balls. I noticed that Andy was a pretty good hitter, he hit several to the outfield.

Then Friday we came in. Coach told us another pitcher (Jon Reynolds) and our catcher, Randy Miller, had been hurt. He was going to call Andy and Ben up, along with 1 other pitcher and hitter. Just then, a Japanese-looking kid walked up. "Hi" he said. "Hi, I'm Seth." "私の名前は和人です。" "Nice to meet you, Kazuhito." said Ben. Coach came over to him. "Are you here for something?" "私の名前は和人です。私はショートを果たしています。" "He plays shortstop, Coach, and his name is Kazuhito." "彼は正しいです。私の名前は一仁鈴木ですが、私はショートを果たしており、私は高校1年生です。" said Kazuhito. "Kazuhito Suzuki, freshman shortstop," said Ben. "Has a nice ring to it, eh?" "Alright, let's see what you can do, Kazuhito. Seth, go to second. Nick, first. Ben, be the catcher. Andy, come pitch to me." Andy threw his first pitch, a fastball, and it popped into the catcher's mitt. His second pitch was a fastball, high and inside, and Coach whiffed. I could tell Coach was getting frustrated. "Alright, throw one more of those fastballs. I'll crush it!" Andy threw a curve. Coach struck out. Coach went out to the mound and yelled at Andy. "Sorry Coach, I was taking the same approach I always do with hitters. Get them out." He told Dan to go run at first. He told Andy to throw pitches, try to get him out, but sometimes Dan would steal. Andy threw a changeup. Strike one. Low fastball. Ball one. He threw a high, outside fastball as Dan tried to steal. Ben easily threw him out. Coach put 2 runners on, one at first, one at home waiting to run on contact. Andy threw a changeup and Coach hit it to short. Kazuhito fielded it, tossed it to me, and I barely threw out Alexander for the double play. "I guess that's all," said Coach. "Good job."

By Monday Randy had recovered from his injury mostly. Coach decided we didn't need to call anyone else up, but Ben was staying with the varsity until Ron recovered. He also said that Jon was recovering well and may cause Andy to be sent back soon. He told us we would return to our regular JV practices. I wondered what I needed to work on.

Practice Pitching

I practiced pitching to Jake at home, he told me I was terrible. He told me some stuff, how to throw a changeup, proper mechanics, stuff like that. After I was done practicing, I went inside for dinner. We had turkey sandwiches and strawberries. The next day was Tuesday. I went to school. In Science we had a quiz and I got a B. Later, I went to practice. I worked on my pitching again. On Wednesday we had a game against the Cookeville Central Chickens. Our lineup looked like this:

My first at-bat came in the second against left-hander Wilson Ross, who threw a high-90s fastball but nothing offspeed. I got into a 1-2 hole and took two pitches (ball 2 and ball 3) to run the count full. His sixth pitch was well outside and I had a walk. My second at-bat came against Ross again, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out. He intentionally walked me. My third at-bat was in the 8th inning. The score was 2-1, Central. The pitcher was Nate Nathan, who threw a low-80s fastball with life, a knuckle curve, and a circle changeup.
